Cops kill suspected robbery gang leaders in Cheras shootout
PETALING JAYA : Two foreign men suspected of being the masterminds of an armed robbery and housebreaking gang were killed in a shootout with police at Jalan Semerah Padi, Cheras, early this morning.
Bukit Aman criminal investigation department acting director Fadil Marsus said the suspects were studying a target when police confronted them at 3.45am.
'They were travelling in a white Honda Civic, reported as stolen in Subang Jaya in 2023.
'As police attempted to intercept them, a shootout ensued, resulting in both suspects being killed at the scene,' Bernama reported him as saying at the location.
Fadil said police found various housebreaking tools, drugs, a revolver, and a semi-automatic pistol in the vehicle.
Investigations found that the two men were allegedly involved in 50 cases of housebreaking and armed robbery as well as drug-related activities dating back to 2022, resulting in losses of more than RM3 million.
Fadil said the gang is believed to be active in several states, including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Perak.
The group has around 15 members, and police are tracking down the remaining individuals, he said.

This second charge falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code and carries a maximum sentence of one year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both. The court granted bail at RM5,000 each for the kidnapping charge and RM2,000 each for the charge of causing hurt, with mention set for September 8. On July 23, a 15 second video showing several people forcing a man into the back of a box van spread over social media.

ALOR SETAR, July 28 — The Ministry of Transport is calling on the public to make full use of the stage bus service introduced under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, which is being rolled out in phases this year. Minister Anthony Loke said the government has allocated substantial funding to support this initiative, particularly in urban areas where the service is in operation. 'To convince the Finance Ministry to continue providing allocations to us, I need to show data and performance — that this service truly benefits the people. 'If the public doesn't use this service despite the affordable fares and convenience offered, we will struggle to justify further funding for its expansion,' Loke told reporters after launching the Kota Setar service today. Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who is also the co-chairman of the Kedah State Development Action Council, and Kedah State Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee chairman Dzowahir Ab Ghani. Loke said that the federal government has allocated RM78.5 million over five years, or RM15.7 million annually, to operate 13 SBST routes in Kedah. The Kota Setar service, which began operations in stages on June 1, has recorded approximately 30,000 users monthly, with numbers expected to reach 40,000 by the end of this month. 'We hope more people will use it. The cost to the government is fixed at RM15.7 million a year for Kedah, regardless of how many passengers use the service. 'The more passengers we have, the lower the average cost per passenger, making the government's investment more worthwhile,' the minister remarked. On a separate note, Loke addressed the recent fatal accident involving a bus in Kota Sarang Semut, saying the matter is under police investigation. The ministry will assist with technical investigations, but whether the driver was negligent or will face charges is up to the police to determine, he said. KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Police suspect foul play in the case of a 70-year-old woman found burnt to death after a fire destroyed five single-storey homes in Kampung Bukit Siput, Segamat, early Friday morning. Police said the fire is believed to have started around 4.15am on July 25 at a garage connected to one of the homes along Jalan Francis Khoo. A local man living in the first affected house spotted flames and quickly alerted his family members to evacuate. However, the witness's mother-in-law re-entered the house to retrieve some belongings and did not exit again, believed to have been trapped inside, said district police chief Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah. The fire also destroyed two cars and two motorcycles before firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control at around 8am. 'Police investigations indicate there may be elements of foul play. However, further investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the incident,' said Ahmad Zamry. 'We urge anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation,' he said, adding that the public can contact the Segamat police hotline at 07-9324222. Police are investigating the case under Sections 304A of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence and Section 436 for arson, which carry punishments of up to 20 years in prison and a fine upon conviction.
