Nagpur: Even as works under Metro Phase 2 continue at a rapid pace across the city and it's outskirts, Nagpurkars can look forward to the next big leap, which is 'Metro Phase 3'. A new metro corridor between Sitabuldi and Koradi has been finalised as part of the recently presented Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), confirmed senior MahaMetro officials after a high-level stakeholder meeting held on Sunday in the presence of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari among others.
The CMP, prepared by MahaMetro in collaboration with RITES, outlines the development of mass rapid transit corridors in the Nagpur Metropolitan Region based on traffic density, projected ridership, and future mobility needs. There is also a proposal for a Metro Phase IV, though the route has not been revealed yet. Among the key proposals in CMP Phase 1 are two High Capacity MRTS Corridors — the 11.5 km Sitabuldi–Koradi corridor and the 25km Mankapur Chowk–Rachana Junction stretch on the Inner Ring Road.
Together, they are estimated to cost Rs8,625 crore.
Of the two, the Sitabuldi–Koradi line was prioritised for development of the metro route. "We have finalised the Sitabuldi–Koradi corridor based on Peak Hour Peak Direction Traffic (PHPDT) assessments. The ridership projections and traffic volumes make it feasible for metro operations," said a senior MahaMetro official.
The proposed corridor is expected to cater to a daily ridership of 1.47 lakh commuters by 2054.

The Sitabuldi-Koradi metro line will diverge from the Kasturchand Park station, and will comprise underground sections also. While details such as the number of stations, alignment, and exact route are yet to be finalised, officials said that once the ongoing 15-day window for suggestions from all concerned departments ends, work on preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will begin.
Tenders will be floated subsequently based on the DPR findings.
On the other hand, the 25km Mankapur Chowk–Rachana Junction corridor was also identified as a potential high-capacity transit corridor. However, instead of immediately extending metro services, the plan currently involves deploying articulated buses along this route. "We will study the performance of bus operations on this corridor. Based on the data collected and demand observed, necessary modifications in the mobility plan will be made in future phases," the official added.
The CMP was designed keeping the horizon year 2030 in mind and includes projections extending up to 2054. It aims to create a sustainable and integrated transport network to support the region's rapid urban expansion. The inclusion of the Sitabuldi–Koradi line is a response to the growing residential and institutional developments towards Koradi, along with the high commuting demand.
Another MahaMetro official also confirmed that during the meeting, CM Fadnavis asked officials to begin work on developing a financial model for the CMP. "Fadnavis pointed out that while the vision is clear, the financing and revenue generation model should also be added in the CMP. He has directed us to prepare a model outlining funding sources, investment recovery strategies, and ways to ensure long-term sustainability of the proposed infrastructure," the official said.
With Metro Phase 3 taking shape and CMP inching closer to final approval, Nagpur is on track to emerge as a model city for multi-modal urban mobility.

India, which achieved one of its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement five years in advance, has crossed its target of installing 50% of its power capacity from non-fossil sources. India's updated NDCs under the agreement submitted in August 2022 said the country aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP to 45% by 2030 from the 2005 level. India seeks to increase the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy resources to 50% of its installed power generation capacity by 2030 and create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030. As of June 30, India's total energy capacity was 484.8 GW, with 242.04 GW (49.92%) from thermal/coal, 8.78 GW (1.81%) from nuclear, and 234.00 GW (48.27%) from renewable sources. India was on track to fulfil its commitments at COP26 in Glasgow. At COP26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will increase its non-fossil fuel energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030 and fulfil 50% of its energy requirements from renewable energy sources by 2030. Modi spoke about reducing India's total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes, reducing the carbon intensity of its economy by 45% by 2030, and achieving the target of net zero emissions by 2070.

Senior officials of the ministry of cooperatives recently held a meeting with the officials of the registrar of cooperative societies for this purpose. Both central govt and Delhi govt offer a subsidy on the installation of rooftop solar panels. According to officials, Delhi govt has adopted a focused campaign to popularise the installation of rooftop solar panels under the scheme by involving cooperative societies. A joint secretary in the Union ministry of cooperation discussed the strategies for implementing the scheme through cooperative societies. "It was decided in a meeting that at least one housing cooperative society and one dairy society be identified under the initial phase," said an official of the Delhi's registrar of cooperative societies. The official added that managing committees, unions and federations of cooperative group housing societies have been requested to start identifying a housing cooperative society with enough space for rooftop solarisation. Though Delhi govt has been pushing for the popularisation of rooftop solar power , it has not picked up much. Delhi govt has even increased the subsidy component on the installation of the plants and made the process easier. "Delhi govt recently approved a subsidy of Rs 30,000 as a top-up subsidy over and above that provided under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna. Hence, a total subsidy of Rs 1.08 lakh (including Rs 78,000 provided by the Centre) can be availed on the installation of a rooftop solar plant of 3 kW capacity," said another official. PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana is a central govt scheme aimed at providing free electricity to one crore households in India, who opt to install rooftop solar electricity units.
