Top chef weighs in RecipeTin Eats plagiarism allegations and reveals stolen recipes are 'pretty common'
A top chef has weighed in on the RecipeTin Eats plagiarism allegations, after Brooke Bellamy was accused of copying the recipes of fellow Australian cook Nagi Maehashi in her popular book, Bake With Brooki.
Ben Shewry, a New Zealand chef based in Australia, said during an appearance on The Project on Wednesday that plagiarism is an ongoing issue in his industry.
'I mean, look, I guess she feels like she's defending herself. I can't speak for her. I don't know her' the chef and author, who works at Attica in Melbourne, began.
'I would say more broadly that plagiarism in recipes is pretty common' he continued.
'And for people that create recipes like me, to have them copied and not accredited is hugely frustrating.'
Shewry says that he has been having his own recipes nicked, 'from the very first year of our restaurant.'
'Particularly that's when plagiarism is a real gut punch. When you're starting out' he explained.
'I think in the later years, I find it annoying because a person that doesn't give credit to other people for their inspiration, just doesn't know themselves.
'But in some ways the hilarity of plagiarism is that it's driven us to make more new things.'
It comes after a second author has accused social media cooking sensation Brooke Bellamy of stealing recipes for her bestselling cookbook Bake With Brooki.
Hours after RecipeTin Eats' Nagi Maehashi raised allegations of copyright infringement on Tuesday night, Sally McKenney, the US author and blogger behind Sally's Baking Addiction, also levelled claims.
Bellamy, who owns the popular Brooki Bakehouse in Brisbane, denied the accusations, saying she had been making and selling her recipes well before Maehashi's were published.
The allegations relate to Maehashi's caramel slice and baklava recipe, along with McKenney's Best Vanilla Cake recipe.
McKenney posted on social media, saying she was first alerted to the similarity months ago.
She said her recipe was first published in 2019.
'One of my recipes was also plagiarised in this book and also appears on the author's YouTube channel,' she said.
'Original recipe creators who put in the work to develop and test recipes deserve credit - especially in a best selling cookbook.'
Bake With Brooki is a bestselling cookbook published by Penguin in October last year and retails for $49.99.
Bellamy quickly became a global sensation after sharing videos on TikTok, which receive millions of views each day.
She is best known for her cookies and has opened pop-up stores in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Both Penguin and Bellamy deny the allegations.
'I did not plagiarise any recipes in my book which consists of 100 recipes I have created over many years,' she said.
Author Sally McKenney (above) accused Brooke Bellamy of stealing her Vanilla Cake recipe
'In 2016, I opened my first bakery. I have been creating my recipes and selling them commercially since October 2016.'
Bellamy posted an image showing her caramel slice, which dated back to December, 2016.
'On March 2020, RecipeTin Eats published a recipe for caramel slice. It uses the same ingredients as my recipe, which I have been making and selling since four years prior,' she said.
While the Brisbane baker insisted she did not copy the recipes, she 'immediately offered' to remove both from future reprints to prevent further aggravation'.
In Maehashi's Instagram post, she described Bellamy of 'profiting' from the alleged plagiarised recipes.
Maehashi claims she first raised concerns with Penguin in December.
'I put a huge amount of effort into my recipes. And I share them on my website for anyone to use for free,' she said.
'To see them plagiarised (in my view) and used in a book for profit, without credit, doesn't just feel unfair. It feels like a blatant exploitation of my work.'
Maehashi is the founder of popular website, RecipeTin Eats, which has 1.5 million followers on Instagram.
She is also the author of award-winning cookbooks Dinner and Tonight.

Lady Gaga could be coming to Hong Kong in 2026 for ‘The Mayhem Ball' Tour
Yeah, we had Coldplay take over the entire territories, the comeback of Nicholas Tse, and Mandopop king Jay Chou coming later this month, but let's be real – we're also still smarting over the fact that Singapore got both Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga but not us! However, the tide might be turning, as there are now rumours swirling that Lady Gaga could be coming to Hong Kong next year. Back in March, Mother Monster announced her upcoming eighth concert tour 'The Mayhem Ball' which is set to commence on July 16. The plan was for the concert to travel across North American, European, and Australian cities, but on June 10, Lady Gaga also announced five dates for Japan, running from January 21 to 29 in Osaka and Tokyo. The plot twist here is that the Lady Gaga news fan account @MayhemBallTour on X had previously already proclaimed on April 9 that the artist will have Tokyo dates. When asked for hints on the whole Asia leg of the tour, they posted emoji flags of Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong – so we're keeping our fingers crossed that we'll actually get Gaga in Kai Tak Stadium or AsiaWorld-Expo come 2026! Interestingly, Hong Kong singer Joey Yung went to Lady Gaga's recent 'The Art of Personal Chaos' concert in Singapore recently and posted on Instagram in Chinese that she 'hopes she'll be able to enjoy it again in Kai Tak'. These industry insiders know something we don't… If the online rumours are anything to go by, Lady Gaga might be putting on three Hong Kong shows in February 2026. Stay tuned for more information as we learn them!

UK viewers can finally binge 'gripping' Australian thriller series
An Australian thriller based on a best-selling novel can now be binged in full in the UK. In 2020 the first season of the psychological thriller series The Secrets She Keeps hit screens. Based on the book of the same name by acclaimed crime-fiction writer Michael Robotham, it was adapted by Sarah Walker and Jonathan Gavin, the former who worked on shows including Home and Away, Neighbours and All Saints. Set in Sydney, the series follows two women from 'vastly different backgrounds with explosive secrets that could destroy everything they hold dear'. It stars Jessica De Gouw (Arrow, Dracula) as Meghan Shaughnessy, who is happily pregnant with her third child. However, her husband Jack (Michael Dorman) is on edge, facing money issues and a stressful job. Meanwhile Agatha Fyfle (Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael) is also pregnant, with both women's lives soon colliding. Sorry, the video was not found At the time of its release, critics were somewhat unconvinced by the storyline but praised the lead stars' performances. 'Without performances as layered and emotionally sound as the ones Carmichael and De Gouw give, The Secrets She Keeps would be little more than the aforementioned pulpy ride,' Paste Magazine shared. 'The whole thing is held together by Laura Carmichael as Aggie, a compulsive liar played at the screeching end of camp, complete with weird, limp hair and beaky fury,' The Sunday Times wrote. 'The leads bring more than enough credibility to their roles to make the series worth watching,' Decider added. However, viewers were much more glowing in their reviews. 'It was gripping, and off-the-charts, and more than once, difficult and even stressful to watch. But this is what the best dramas do: they evoke a response from the viewer, and this did that in spades,' user InnerWisdom1000 posted on IMDB. 'Good casting, very entertaining and pretty tense at times. Would definitely recommend,' Laura wrote. 'First episode I wasn't sure, but this series turned into a binge watch for me! Dark, and with some pretty good twists, the story of Agatha and Megan is brilliantly done. Agatha especially gets more and more bonkers in a sinister way,' Juli added. Although the first season was originally made available on BBC iPlayer, it was later taken down. But two years after the second season was released, UK fans and those yet to tune in can now watch both in full on Channel 4, where the show has been uploaded this week. The original novel was inspired by the kidnapping of newborn baby Abbie Sundgren in Nottingham in 1994. Just three hours after her birth, Abbie was taken by a woman posing as a nurse, who kept her for 17 days. At the time Michael was working as a journalist in London and covered the story, which he used as the basis of his novel nearly 20 years later. More Trending 'The idea stuck with me and the turning point came when I thought about an added element — what if it wasn't just a random baby that was taken? What if someone had faked a pregnancy and intended to steal a baby …and they had chosen the baby they wanted to steal,' he previously told The West Australian. While the novel was set in the United Kingdom, the television adaption was set in suburban Sydney — a change the author encouraged. 'When I was approached, I was asked if it was a deal-breaker to me, but it didn't really cross my mind. It is a universal story. The TV series has done an astonishing job and Jess and Laura have done an amazing job playing two women from two different sides of the economic equation … one with a nice husband and a nice house in an expensive neighbourhood, the other, who is living in much poorer circumstances, just trying to get by.'
