Top chef weighs in RecipeTin Eats plagiarism allegations and reveals stolen recipes are 'pretty common'

Daily Mail30-04-2025
A top chef has weighed in on the RecipeTin Eats plagiarism allegations, after Brooke Bellamy was accused of copying the recipes of fellow Australian cook Nagi Maehashi in her popular book, Bake With Brooki.
Ben Shewry, a New Zealand chef based in Australia, said during an appearance on The Project on Wednesday that plagiarism is an ongoing issue in his industry.
'I mean, look, I guess she feels like she's defending herself. I can't speak for her. I don't know her' the chef and author, who works at Attica in Melbourne, began.
'I would say more broadly that plagiarism in recipes is pretty common' he continued.
'And for people that create recipes like me, to have them copied and not accredited is hugely frustrating.'
Shewry says that he has been having his own recipes nicked, 'from the very first year of our restaurant.'
'Particularly that's when plagiarism is a real gut punch. When you're starting out' he explained.
'I think in the later years, I find it annoying because a person that doesn't give credit to other people for their inspiration, just doesn't know themselves.
'But in some ways the hilarity of plagiarism is that it's driven us to make more new things.'
It comes after a second author has accused social media cooking sensation Brooke Bellamy of stealing recipes for her bestselling cookbook Bake With Brooki.
Hours after RecipeTin Eats' Nagi Maehashi raised allegations of copyright infringement on Tuesday night, Sally McKenney, the US author and blogger behind Sally's Baking Addiction, also levelled claims.
Bellamy, who owns the popular Brooki Bakehouse in Brisbane, denied the accusations, saying she had been making and selling her recipes well before Maehashi's were published.
The allegations relate to Maehashi's caramel slice and baklava recipe, along with McKenney's Best Vanilla Cake recipe.
McKenney posted on social media, saying she was first alerted to the similarity months ago.
She said her recipe was first published in 2019.
'One of my recipes was also plagiarised in this book and also appears on the author's YouTube channel,' she said.
'Original recipe creators who put in the work to develop and test recipes deserve credit - especially in a best selling cookbook.'
Bake With Brooki is a bestselling cookbook published by Penguin in October last year and retails for $49.99.
Bellamy quickly became a global sensation after sharing videos on TikTok, which receive millions of views each day.
She is best known for her cookies and has opened pop-up stores in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Both Penguin and Bellamy deny the allegations.
'I did not plagiarise any recipes in my book which consists of 100 recipes I have created over many years,' she said.
Author Sally McKenney (above) accused Brooke Bellamy of stealing her Vanilla Cake recipe
'In 2016, I opened my first bakery. I have been creating my recipes and selling them commercially since October 2016.'
Bellamy posted an image showing her caramel slice, which dated back to December, 2016.
'On March 2020, RecipeTin Eats published a recipe for caramel slice. It uses the same ingredients as my recipe, which I have been making and selling since four years prior,' she said.
While the Brisbane baker insisted she did not copy the recipes, she 'immediately offered' to remove both from future reprints to prevent further aggravation'.
In Maehashi's Instagram post, she described Bellamy of 'profiting' from the alleged plagiarised recipes.
Maehashi claims she first raised concerns with Penguin in December.
'I put a huge amount of effort into my recipes. And I share them on my website for anyone to use for free,' she said.
'To see them plagiarised (in my view) and used in a book for profit, without credit, doesn't just feel unfair. It feels like a blatant exploitation of my work.'
Maehashi is the founder of popular website, RecipeTin Eats, which has 1.5 million followers on Instagram.
She is also the author of award-winning cookbooks Dinner and Tonight.

England rugby star 'choked out' cast member in unaired TV footage as full story emerges

England rugby star 'choked out' cast member in unaired TV footage as full story emerges The dual-code England star was appearing on SAS Australia: Who Dares Wins in 2021 Sam Burgess pretends to choke out Phil Tufnell as he explains how he hijacked a bus (Image: YouTube) Former England dual-code rugby international Sam Burgess has revealed how he once hijacked a bus on a TV show, choking out the driver in unaired footage. ‌ Burgess, who played for England in the 2015 World Cup, was competing on the second series of SAS Australia: Who Dares Wins back in 2021 when he ended up commandeering a mini-bus. The show, which first aired in the UK in 2015 before an Australian version was made in 2020, pits contestants against a shortened training course designed to simulate a condensed version of the actual United Kingdom Special Forces selection course. ‌ However, in Burgess, producers clearly got more than they bargained for as he gave those involved in the show a taste of their own medicine after hijacking a bus following one challenge. ‌ Appearing on the Stick to Cricket podcast with Phil Tufnell, Sir Alastair Cook, David Lloyd and Michael Vaughan, Burgess dove into great detail - even using Tufnell as a makeshift driver to show how he manufactured his escape as he left the former cricketers in raptures. "Yes, it's a true story," said Burgess when Vaughan asked if there was a story from the show involving a bus. "They took us away and it's a 15-day course. "20 might start and it's just who can get to the end, basically. We get to day 12 and there's only four or five people left on the show. Article continues below "Throughout the whole show, you're sleep deprived, food deprived, freezing cold. It's really hard graft. Each night, they might come in and talk to you before you go to bed. 'Listen, if you're captured, you should always try and escape, because the longer you're in captivity, the less chance of survival'. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. "This is all sinking in my subconscious. The next day, we do this assault course for four or five hours. We're freezing cold, wet through. "Explosions go off and guns come in. They put hoods on you and tie you up. I felt like I was in a warzone. By this point, you feel like a zombie. ‌ "The training kicked in, what they've been teaching us over the last few weeks. I'm in a stressed position against the fence, with this woman kicking me in the shins. I'm thinking 'what is going on here'. "After about two hours in captivity, they've thrown us in a vehicle and are transporting us to another destination. They also said that on transportation is where you've got a great chance to escape, because it's generally someone low down the food chain - that's where you should attempt to escape. "So I've gone here's my chance. I've got a hood on and zip ties on my wrist. I'm so fired up because of that woman kicking me in the shins, I've popped the wrist straps. ‌ "We're on a bus that's moving. We're told we're on there with armed guys with guns so do not f*****g move. "So I've peeked through my hood and I see the other contestants. There's one guy driving, there's a camera man and one other guy. I think there's no guns on here. "I can take them. We're on a bit of a freeway. We're going about 100 km/h. I charge the bus and I get the guy at the front. I'm dishing him up. ‌ "It's no show in my head. I was convinced I was in Afghanistan. I was there in my head. This guy had an earpiece on but I ripped out his comms and get him under control. "I free one of my fellow contestants, John Steffensen, who is a sprinter." Burgess, who won the NRL title with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2014, then used Tufnell to show what he did to the bus driver. The panel were left stunned by Burgess, who continued his story. ‌ "I say 'don't you f*****g move'," said Burgess, stood behind the former England spinner. "I'm choking him and I say pull the van over now. "He's not saying a word. I start tugging the wheel and everyone's screaming. This guy didn't break character. "I say I'll put you to sleep. I say to John I'm going to choke him out. Handbrake on, keys out, he's out the vehicle as well as the other guy. I get in the front seat. The cameraman looks at me and I say you can get out as well." ‌ Ultimately, another contestant - former Australian athlete Jana Pittman - convinced Burgess to snap out of it, but not before he'd tried to find some food after nearly two weeks of brutal training. "I've then got the mini-bus, me and four other contestants," he continued. "I was starving. "I thought I'd go to KFC. But I had no money. I'm driving down the road, don't know where to go, but I'm free. I thought I'd completed the show. ‌ "I'm driving around and this vehicle comes towards us. It's definitely from the show. I took it on. They swerved off. I wanted to win. "There's a woman still on the show, Jana Pittman, amazing athlete. She said to me 'you've taken it a bit too far'. I came back into normal life. "I drove past a pub so I pulled in there. Within about 15 minutes, we were surrounded by six cars. Ant Middleton came back on the bus and they absolutely flogged us for about 12 hours. Article continues below "We lost two contestants that night. They never aired any part of that show because we weren't insured. None of it has been aired. "They loved it, though. They reckon it's the best escape story they've ever had."

Neil Perry's new restaurant, brought to life in Song Bird's former nest, serves Italian classics with a side of la dolce vita

If the name 'Gran Torino' rings a bell, you might be thinking of the vintage car or the Clint Eastwood movie by the same name. But now, there's another reason to remember it: Neil Perry's latest restaurant. Taking over the former home of his Cantonese diner Song Bird in the heritage-listed Gaden House in Double Bay – which recently had its final flight less than a year after its shiny big opening – Gran Torino serves up Italian classics with a modern Australian spin and that unmistakable Perry polish. Gran Torino is a one-minute walk from Perry's cream-accented flagship diner Margaret – voted the second-best steak restaurant in the world – as well as his casual outpost Next Door (get the burge r) and excellent bakery, Baker Bleu. The elegant two-storey dining room has been reimagined by long-time collaborators, fashion designer Collette Dinnigan and food photographer Earl Carter. Think bold red accents and striking black-and-white photographs from the 1950s and '60s that adorn the walls and add a touch of la dolce vita The menu, crafted by Perry with executive chef Richard Purdue (Margaret, ex- Rockpool, ex- Rosetta) and Margaret's current head chef Ervin Mumajesi, champions seasonal produce from Perry's trusted local suppliers. Dishes are kept authentic to highlight the freshest seafood and prime cuts of meat. Perry says: 'The basis of all Italian cooking is to work with the seasons, so Gran Torino's menu will reflect what's available at the market each day. Antipasti and pasta to begin, followed by seafood and meat for mains. To be cooking these dishes in this beautiful dining room just feels right.' Go with Perry's rec and kick things off with antipasti – the bresaola using thinly sliced Mishima beef topped with Reggiano, or the shaved raw artichokes and fennel, are our picks. Move on to house-made pasta like the pumpkin tortelli with burnt butter, the tagliolini with blue swimmer crab, or the agnolotti del plin that's stuffed with veal and guinea fowl (plin means 'pinch' and refers to the way the pasta is sealed). For mains, how about a mighty 1kg bistecca alla Fiorentina, or a grilled swordfish steak? Make sure you have a separate 'dessert stomach' for classic tiramisu and bomboloni filled with vanilla cream and raspberry conserve. The drinks list is just as enticing, with Bellinis, Martinis, Italian vermouths and Campari, plus drops from Australia to Italy and across to the Americas. And there's more to come. In September, Neil and Samantha Perry will launch Bar Torino in the space that Bobbie's occupied. It will be a more casual Italian spot for spuntini, antipasti, pasta and larger plates, served from midday 'til late. Got a celebratory dinner coming up? Give Gran Torino a try.
