Kolkata/Jalpaiguri: Three Bengal residents, who were among five held by Mumbai Police and pushed into Bangladesh by BSF, were repatriated to India on Sunday after the Bengal govt flagged the incident to Centre.
The two others remain in custody of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and are likely to return soon.
Sources said Mumbai cops picked up four Murshidabad residents: Minarul Sekh of Beldanga, Nazimuddin Mondal of Hariharpara, Mehboob Sheikh of Bhagwangola and Dablu Sheikh of Ranitala, as well as Mustafa Kamal of East Burdwan's Monteswar earlier this month.
The five were first sent to Cooch Behar and then pushed into Bangladesh where they were apprehended by BGB.
They ended up in Bangladesh's Lalmonirhat. On Saturday, three of them made a video appeal to CM Mamata Banerjee seeking help to return home.
Trinamool Rajya Sabha member Samirul Islam, who heads Bengal's migrant workers welfare board, said, "The CM was informed about how Bengal residents were being illegally pushed into Bangladesh. The CM immediately asked the Bengal administration to take up the issue with Centre and bring them back."

"BSF and BGB held a flag meeting. Three among them (Sekh, Mondal and Kamal) were sent back. They are now in Mekhliganj (Cooch Behar). The remaining two are expected to return on Monday," he added.
They were handed over to India around 4pm, said Mani Bhusan Sarkar, OC of Mekhliganj Police Station. "They are tired and yet to recover from their state of trauma," Sarkar said.
MP Islam said, "Just because the five spoke Bengali, Mumbai Police tagged them Bangladeshis without verifying their identity and decided to pack them off to the border and handed them over to BSF, who also did not cross-check the documents of these poor migrant workers."
Mondal's brother Mabub Ali said he was informed of his brother's return by the local police and MLA Niamat Sheikh.

Live Events "I've seen Delhi evolve since just after partition, when the city's population was around 11-12 lakh. After successive waves of migration, the population has now crossed over 2 crore. You can see the results of the triple-engine government we now have--at the Centre, in Delhi, and in the MCD ," he added. Earlier on June 14, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said that India is firmly on track to become the world's third-largest economy by 2029, crediting 11 years of Narendra Modi's "decisive and corruption-free governance" for triggering what he described as an "unstoppable surge" in national development. Addressing a press conference in Dibrugadh to mark the NDA government's 11th anniversary, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister said that India has emerged from an era of "policy paralysis and dynastic politics" and is now driven by welfare-led growth, youth-powered innovation, and massive infrastructure expansion. "In just one decade, over 25 crore Indians have risen above poverty. That's more than the population of most European countries," Sonowal said. "This is the Modi guarantee -- delivery with speed, scale and honesty." Highlighting the economic strides under the Modi government, Sarbananda Sonowal said India's rise to the fourth-largest global economy is just the beginning. "By 2029, India will be the third-largest economy. We're building the foundation for a Viksit Bharat -- a developed, self-reliant India." Sonowal cited the rise of India's startup ecosystem -- from 30,000 in 2014 to over 1 lakh today -- as evidence of the country's changing mindset. "This is a new India, led by young dreamers and doers. Over 1.7 crore youth are now part of this vibrant startup movement."

Gazette notification on census 'damp squib'; silent on inclusion of caste: Congress
Terming the notification on the 16th census as a 'damp squib', the Congress on Monday (June 16, 2025) said it is silent on the inclusion of caste in the exercise and asked whether this is another 'U-turn' by the government. The Opposition party also asserted that the Centre must adopt the Telangana model for not just caste enumeration but also in bringing out detailed data on socio-economic parameters caste-wise. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the much-touted gazette notification on the 16th Census to be conducted in late 2026/early 2027 has just been issued and is a 'damp squib'. 'It is quite a damp squib and merely repeats what had already been announced on April 30, 2025,' Mr. Ramesh said on X. He further said that it is entirely because of the persistence and insistence of the Congress that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'surrendered' to the demand for a caste census. 'He [Modi] had called Congress leaders as urban Naxals for making this demand. Both in Parliament and in the Supreme Court, the Modi Government had rejected the very idea of a caste census - which it announced 47 days back,' Mr. Ramesh said. 'Today's Gazette Notification is, however, SILENT on the inclusion of caste in the 16th Census. Is this yet another U-turn by the ustad of U-turns? Or will details be announced later?' he said. The Congress firmly believes that the 16th Census must adopt the Telangana model for not just caste enumeration but also bringing out detailed data information on socio-economic parameters caste-wise, he asserted. The government on Monday (June 16) issued a notification for conducting India's 16th census in 2027, 16 years after the last such exercise in 2011. The census will be carried out with a reference date of October 1, 2026 in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and March 1, 2027 in the rest of the country, the notification said. 'The reference date for the said census shall be 00.00 hours of the 1st day of March, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,' it said. In respect of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date shall be 00:00 hours of the 1st day of October, 2026, it said.

BJP labelling Bengali-speaking Indians in BJP-ruled states as Bangladeshi: CM Mamata in Assembly
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused the BJP of targeting Bengali-speaking citizens in states ruled by the saffron party by labelling even valid document holders as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Trouble started during the question hour in the Assembly when the CM accused the saffron party of carrying out a witch-hunt against Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. "You must be ashamed that you are labelling bona fide Indian citizens as Bangladeshis just because of the language they speak. One should feel proud to speak in Bengali, as well as Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi. If you ask me, I can speak in all these languages," Banerjee said. "On one hand, you are branding Indians as Bangladeshis for their spoken word, and on the other, you are depriving these people, who hold voter ID, PAN, and Aadhaar cards, of the right to earn their livelihood in your states," she added. Her remarks triggered an uproar from BJP legislators, who stood up in protest and shouted slogans. However, the Chief Minister continued her speech undeterred. Accusing the Centre of blocking central funds due to the state, the CM said despite the BJP's step-motherly treatment, the state has laid 69,000 km of roads under Pathashree and initiated Awas Yojana with Rs 11,000 crore. "Bengal has topped road and rural housing project rankings five times in a row," she added. She claimed that despite the financial crunch, people in the state were getting 50 days of employment on average, and that her government had created 1.5 crore mandays under various schemes. "While on one hand you deprive the poor people of Bengal, on the other, the procession of deaths in various mishaps continues in your states," she said. Banerjee asserted that her government was working to safeguard the interests of Scheduled Castes (26 per cent), Scheduled Tribes (6 per cent), backward castes, and Muslims (30 per cent), in line with the Supreme Court and High Court directives on social welfare.
