Bumiputra congress retreat session to become annual affair, says Zahid

The Star23-05-2025
PUTRAJAYA: The Bumiputra Economic Congress (KEB) retreat session will be made an annual affair to collectively revive the bumiputra development agenda, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said the annual session would also enable bumiputra development to be implemented across ministries, agencies and sectors.
"The time has come for us to move boldly, guided by strategic inventions that are data-based and backed by real results.
"Now is the time to prove that everything that has been planned is being implemented,' he said in his speech when launching the opening ceremony of the KEB 2024 One-Year Retreat at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre here Friday (May 23).
He said that, after today's retreat session, he wants every driver under the Bumiputra Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (PuTERA35) to have a clear, aggressive and consistent communication plan.
"The people have the right to know how many bumiputra entrepreneurs were produced this year, how many have progressed from micro to medium enterprises, how many TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) graduates are now earning monthly salaries of RM4,000 and above,' he said.
To ensure the PuTERA35 runs smoothly, he has instructed all deputy secretary-generals (Policy) in each ministry to coordinate and monitor the plan's implementation.
"This role will be strengthened by the Bumiputra Empowerment Unit (UPB), which must be restructured according to current needs,' he said.
Ahmad Zahid said he wants all PuTERA35 drivers to prioritise the 132 initiatives contained in the plan to let the people witness the targeted results and impact.
"So far, the implementation of programmes and projects under PuTERA35 has reached more than 15 per cent,' he said.
PuTERA35, launched on Aug 19, 20204, is a holistic action framework to strengthen the bumiputra economy for the next 10 years.
Reflecting on the organisation of KEB 2024 in February, he said the three-day congress managed to produce over 80 resolutions as an agenda on bumiputra empowerment in the era of digitalisation.
"Sixteen months ago, we held discussions at KEB 2024, which was full of hope and determination. Today, we are gathered once again to work towards results that are on par with or better than before,' he said.
Regarding TVET applications, he said the National TVET Council has recorded applications from over 126,000 candidates for the July 2025 session.
Describing this as a positive development, he said the TVET is beginning to appeal to the younger generation, who are starting to be confident in the bright future that the field holds.
"The reason I'm emphasising this is because when we speak about TVET, we are actually building the future of bumiputra children,' he said. - Bernama

Court of Appeal upholds Sarawak homebuyers' right to claim from booking fee date

KUCHING: The Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling that late delivery compensation for homes in Sarawak should be calculated from the date the booking fee is paid, not the date of the sale and purchase agreement (SPA). In a unanimous decision on Thursday (August 24), a three-member bench, comprising Datuk Azimah Binti Omar, Datuk Wong Kian Kheong and Datuk Ismail Brahim allowed an appeal by the Sarawak Housing Tribunal against developer Lien Dak Development Sdn Bhd, awarding costs of RM10,000. The judgment followed the Federal Court's precedent in the PJD Regency case and the RJ Realty cases in Sarawak. The dispute began when buyers Wong Sii Hieng and Ng Siew Eng complained to the Tribunal in 2021 over the late delivery of a Rock Road property purchased in 2016. The Tribunal ruled in their favour, but the High Court later quashed the award. The Court of Appeal has now reinstated the Tribunal's decision, reinforcing homebuyers' rights. Separately, the Court allowed Sentoria Borneo Land Sdn Bhd to discharge its legal team in an ongoing appeal involving purchasers of Borneo Samariang Resort City serviced apartments. The Tribunal, represented by the Sarawak State Attorney-General's Chambers, is defending its awards under the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Ordinance 2013. The case will return for case management on September 12, 2025.

Ahmad Zahid: HLC on rural development to drive integrated, sustainable growth

THE Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) continues to strengthen the rural development agenda through the official establishment of the High-Level Committee (HLC) on Rural Development — the highest-level strategic platform that discusses comprehensive rural development policies and implementation across ministries and agencies. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (picture) said the HLC will be supported by working committees formed around six key focus areas, namely education, entrepreneur development, rural economy, technology and digitalisation, rural tourism, and rural infrastructure. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the HLC will meet at least twice a year, or as required. 'The establishment of the HLC is in line with the aspirations of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which emphasises integrated governance to reduce duplication of functions, optimise resource utilisation, and accelerate the achievement of outcomes. 'Through this HLC, the government aims to reduce youth migration to cities by creating more opportunities in rural areas, producing more rural techno-entrepreneurs, strengthening the role of the Regional Development Board through new business models and boosting a competitive rural tourism sector,' he said in a statement today. Earlier, he chaired the inaugural HLC meeting at the Parliament Building, which was also attended by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. According to Ahmad Zahid, the key inputs from the meeting included improving facilities and access to rural schools, enhancing the promotion of rural tourism, addressing the welfare of the elderly and people with special needs, and upgrading health infrastructure to improve the well-being of rural communities. He said the cross-ministerial initiatives already underway and directly benefiting rural stakeholders include UP_TVET, a centralised application system for Technical and Vocational Education and Training courses. Other programmes include Inap Desa Tahun Melawat Malaysia 2026, which promotes rural tourism as a key attraction; the Mega 3-Dimensional Carnival (KM3D), a large-scale entrepreneurship platform; and the SBP-MRSM Single Application System, which streamlines admission to boarding schools. 'Rural development is not just about building physical infrastructure, but also about building the future and unlocking the potential of the people. I am confident that, with a whole-of-government approach, this HLC will help create a prosperous, sustainable rural ecosystem and drive national progress,' he said. — BERNAMA
