The suspects were reportedly planning to target specific individuals and locations with the intent of committing acts detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
In a joint operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal arrested two individuals suspected of being members of the banned terrorist organisation Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). The arrests were made during simultaneous raids conducted on the intervening night of May 8 and 9, in the Nalhati and Murarai areas of Birbhum district.
The arrested individuals have been identified as: Ajmal Hossain (28), a resident of Chandipur village in Banior under Nalhati Police Station, Birbhum, and Saheb Ali Khan (28), a resident of Chatra village under Murarai Police Station, Birbhum.
According to the STF, both suspects were actively propagating the ideology of JMB, a proscribed terror outfit in India. They were part of a module involved in spreading seditious and jihadi materials through encrypted and sophisticated communication channels. Their objective was to radicalize and recruit Muslim youth to join the terror organisation, with the ultimate aim of waging war against the Government of India.
The suspects were reportedly planning to target specific individuals and locations with the intent of committing acts detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of the country. They also attempted to procure firearms and were in the process of preparing explosives to further the ideology of 'Ghazwatul Hind."
Notably, Ajmal Hossain had previously attempted to infiltrate Bangladesh in connection with jihadi activities and is believed to have links across other regions in the subcontinent.
Both individuals are being presented before the Learned Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) at Rampurhat, Birbhum today. The STF has sought police custody to facilitate detailed interrogation and to uncover other members and links associated with the module.

Wanted inter-state criminal killed in police encounter in Bihar, constable injured

PATNA: An interstate criminal carrying a bounty of Rs.50,000 on his head was killed in a fierce encounter with police in Bihar's Vaishali district on Friday. Arvind Sahni, 30, had escaped from a court lockup after evading police in Samastipur district on May 28 this year and had been on the run since. According to police, he was involved in at least 22 cases of murder, loot, dacoity, and arms deals across Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, and East Champaran districts. A police constable was injured during the exchange of fire. Based on a tip-off, a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF) and district police surrounded Chintamanipur village under Vaishali police station limits on Thursday evening to search for Sahni. On seeing the police, Sahni and his accomplices opened fire. Sahni sustained gunshot injuries, while his accomplices managed to escape. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. Superintendent of Police, Vaishali, Lalit Mohan Sharma, said, 'While Sahni was killed, a police constable sustained injuries in the exchange of fire. The deceased, a member of an inter-state gang, was wanted in at least 22 cases in several districts in the state. Sahni's name had also figured in a major jewellery loot case in Chhattisgarh.' Sahni, a resident of Sahtha Bhagwanpur village in Vaishali district, was also involved in the 2019 gold loot from the Hajipur office of a private finance company. SP Sharma added, 'We have launched intensive search for other members of the gang. The operation will continue till their arrest.' Sahni's elimination in the police operation has come as a major relief for businessmen in Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, and Samastipur, who had been targeted by his gang. Police said the gang had unleashed a reign of terror in these districts, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices.

Roof of Dargah Near Humayun's Tomb Collapses, 12 Rescued

New Delhi: Twelve people were rescued after part of the roof of a dargah, or the tomb of a Muslim saint, collapsed in Delhi's Nizamuddin area Friday evening. The building - the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah - is located inside a 16th century complex of religious structures and gardens housing Mughal ruler Humayun's mausoleum. Visuals from the site showed a small, lime-green building around an open courtyard. The roof on one side of the building appeared to have collapsed. Rescue workers were seen on site. #WATCH | Delhi | Portion of the roof of a room at Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, located in the Nizamuddin area, collapses; Police and Fire Department personnel on the spot; Area cordoned off — ANI (@ANI) August 15, 2025 Unconfirmed reports say there were 15-20 inside the building, including the imam, when the roof, which is believed to be about 25-30 years old, collapsed.
