Mother reveals how she reclaimed £5,686 in missing benefits - and how others can too
Millions of people are missing out on support often worth thousands of pounds a year, as the scale of unclaimed welfare benefits is revealed. Several crucial benefits are available in the UK to meet various needs. The complex nature of the welfare system means those who are eligible for certain benefits can often miss out. In 2023-2024, there was £23 billion of support unclaimed, according to research by Policy in Practice. The majority of this is universal credit, which is the most commonly claimed benefit in the UK for those on a low income. Newly released statistics from anti-poverty charity Turn2Us show that £9.6 billion has gone unclaimed in universal credit alone over the past year. Single mother-of-three Esther found out she was missing out on several benefits despite being entitled after using the charity's entitlement calculator. She said: 'The calculator uncovered support I didn't know I could get, things like Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for my children, council tax reduction [or support], and the health and carer elements within universal credit. 'Altogether it was worth thousands once backdated, but the real difference wasn't the amount, it was stability. I didn't have to work every waking hour just to keep up. I could heat the house, fix things when they broke, and actually be present for my children.' The 37-year-old has two twin sons with complex needs. This qualifies her for extra entitlements that she did not previously know she was eligible for. After finding this out, Esther was able to receive the carer's element of universal credit backdated three years, as well as a complete reduction of her council tax. Altogether, the three extra benefits she was able to claim would add up to an average of £400 a month, or £4,800 a year. And because Esther has two children with complex disabilities, both receive DLA separately, which would boost this amount to an average of £5,686. 'There's no shame in needing support,' said Esther, who advises people 'not to wait, because in my story I waited until it was at crisis point, and it doesn't have to be that'. The benefit next most missed out on after universal credit is council tax support, which is less well-known. This is a discount on council tax that is granted by local authorities to eligible households in their area who apply. Around £3.4 million worth of council tax support went unclaimed in 2023-2024, with more than 2.2 million households missing out. The discount can see the monthly charge reduced by up to 100 per cent, meaning it is well worth people applying. Eligibility will normally be based on factors like income, benefits received and savings. Anna Stevenson, benefits expert at Turn2us, said: 'A lot of people miss out on council tax support simply because they're not aware it exists. It's not always advertised clearly, and the information can be buried or seem complex. 'For families already stretched thin, it's easy to assume there's no extra help available. However, many are entitled to support that could make a real difference to their household budget.' To find out if they are missing out on any support they are entitled to, people can use the benefits calculator from Turn2Us, which will ask a few questions in confidence. A spokesperson for the Local Government Association, which represents councils across England, said: 'Councils provide a range of support to people who are struggling to meet their council tax payments. It is vital that anyone who is unable to afford their bills, or who is at risk of financial hardship, contacts their council as soon as possible to access help. 'High numbers are claiming a discount on their council tax, which is adding further pressure on this already underfunded vital local safety net. The government needs to ensure councils have the full amount of funding required to provide council tax support to those who need it. Otherwise, it is almost inevitable that bills will continue to be forced up for those who can least afford to pay.' A Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson said: 'Councils are required to put schemes in place to help those on low incomes with their council tax bills, and anyone currently experiencing difficulties paying their bill can benefit from a range of discounts and exemptions. 'We are determined to give working families more security, which is why, through our Plan for Change, we are consulting on ways to modernise the billing process to make it fairer and simpler, as well as protecting people against excessive hikes.'

Wary diners shun restaurants, raising prospect of boost for retailers
Aug 20(Reuters) - Cash-conscious consumers choosing to eat in rather than dine out have raised the prospect of an upturn in earnings for supermarkets and food delivery firms, according to data, analysts and company executives. U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies have added to economic uncertainty, increased the likelihood of stubborn inflation and made consumers question whether restaurants are worth the expense. "I eat much more at home because first of all eating out is way more expensive lately, and quality is not always guaranteed," Marilena Graziano, a Florence-based teacher, told Reuters. Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize ( opens new tab, owner of the Food Lion and Giant stores in the United States, said earlier this month that it was increasing its offers tailored to low-cost eating in. "We have solutions for customers to have a very affordable meal of $2.50 per person at home with the family," Ahold's CEO Frans Muller said in an interview this month. "We have increased a lot of that proposition in our stores." The shift hints at a revival of the boom in eating at home during the COVID-19 pandemic when people could not go out. Home delivery companies such as Just made record sales, although they struggled once lockdown restrictions were lifted. Figures from Rabobank and Eurostat show that food retail sales volumes adjusted for inflation in supermarkets, hypermarkets and similar stores grew by 1.5% in the Eurozone between January and May this year. That compares with 0.1% growth over the same period last year. For food and beverage services, such as restaurants and bars, the metric fell by 0.3%. Last year's growth was flat at 0%. The inflation-adjusted figures suggest that sales at supermarkets are recovering faster than at restaurants, especially for routine weekday meals, Rabobank's consumer foods sector analyst Maria Castroviejo told Reuters. Castroviejo cited the rising popularity of grab-and-go meals, salads, wraps, and sandwiches. "This offer has increased and improved a lot and we know that this is taking away some demands from certain foodservice players," she said. Delivery Hero ( opens new tab, which owns Glovo and Foodpanda, said that consumers go out less during times of economic hardship, but will order in as a cheaper alternative. A survey of more than 5,000 U.S. adults commissioned by Hellofresh ( opens new tab, a German meal-kit maker that makes most of its revenue in North America, showed 93% of them expect to cook as much as last year or more in the next year. Among those who plan to cook more at home in the next year, more than three-quarters say the economy is a factor. Visits to grocery stores have steadily outpaced those to restaurants and bars in the U.S., data from foot traffic tracking firm showed. The data showed visits to grocery stores grew by 1.3% year-on-year in June, while they fell 0.4% in the same months for restaurants. Jenny Russmann, who works for an international organisation in Vienna, is among those using supermarkets more. "I switched to eating at home a bit over a month ago due to wanting to just be healthier and especially also costs." In Milan, Chiara Schiavoni, employed at the regional administration, said she prefers to eat at home as prices rise and restaurants' portions shrink in Italy's financial capital. "I get seven-euro food vouchers at work and I can't even buy a sandwich, which costs around nine euros in restaurants around my office," she said. "On the other hand, I can use them in supermarkets where all in all it's more convenient." ($1 = 0.8566 euros)

'Versatile' 3-in-1 hand blender is cheaper on Amazon even during Ninja sale
'This 3-in-1 Ninja food processor has become one of my most-used kitchen tools.' While many people may enjoy the art of cooking and learning new recipes, it can quickly become a messy ordeal when multiple devices are needed. This can become even more annoying when everything needs to be cleaned after the delicious dish has been eaten. In order to leave at-home chefs with less items to clean, Ninja has combined a few kitchen essentials into one device. The Ninja Foodi 3-in-1 Hand Blender normally retails for £129.99, but it is currently available for £99.99 on the Ninja website. However, for those on the hunt for a bargain and are wanting to save some extra cash, savvy shoppers should instead head to Amazon to purchase the handy device as it is currently down to £79.20 - saving shoppers an extra £20.79 in comparison. Along with the base of the Ninja Hand Blender, shoppers will also get a hand mixer, chopper and hand blender attachments that can easily be switched between at a moment's notice with the hands-free eject button. This will allow shoppers to blend, mix, chop and whisk with ease. While the device is equipped with two blending speeds, five mixing speeds and a turbo option for shoppers to choose between, the 850W base is also able to recognise which attachment has been connected and will offer optimised speed settings for added convenience. It should be noted that the mixing attachment can be used with either two beaters to help quickly mix batters, or with a balloon whisk to help whip cream and beat eggs - both which are supplied with the hand blender. Additionally, shoppers can get a two year guarantee if they register the device with Ninja. Ninja Foodi 3-in-1 Hand Blender £129.99 £79.20 Amazon Buy Now Product Description However, if shoppers are looking for something cheaper, Amazon is also selling the Shardor Hand Blender. Dropped down from £45.99 to £35.13 in a limited time deal This 6-in-1 device comes with anti-scraper blade protection which prevents scratches on pots, pans and other containers. Alternatively, Argos is selling the Braun MultiQuick 7 Hand Blender for £110. Boasting a powerful 1000W motor, this device is able to provide up to 55 per cent less suction to ensure users enjoy effortless handling and perfect control. Back to the Ninja Foodi 3-in-1 Hand Blender, it currently boasts a 4.6 star rating and is currently one of Amazon's top choices. One happy customer said: "A powerful and versatile 3-in-1 kitchen machine – truly worth the price. This 3-in-1 Ninja food processor has become one of my most-used kitchen tools. It comes with three main attachments: a chopper, whisk/beater, and a purée/mixer, and honestly, all three work brilliantly. "Whether I'm blending soup, whipping cream, or mixing dough, this machine handles everything with ease." While another five-star reviewer wrote: "This is a beast of a kitchen tool & worth every penny. It's built to be tough and powerful. The ease of changing the attachments makes it a pleasure to use. I've got rid of my old beaters, blenders & other electrical baking & making machines as this is tough enough to do all those jobs." However, not everyone was fully impressed by the device, as one person noted: "Not suitable for small blends but otherwise really solid build quality and sturdy." With another mixed reviewer adding: "The only thing I would have really liked to have been included is some sort of storage box to keep everything stowed away neatly together." On the flip side, a top reviewer commented: "I seem to have accumulated lots of Ninja gear over the last few years and this is a really good addition. Very powerful stick blender that I use on soups and pasta dishes. If you've ever tried blending leek and potato soup you'll know that the leeks get caught on the blades. "This one absolutely destroys them. Converting it to hand whisk is really simple and extremely effective whipping up cream in no time. Chopping unit is small but useful for things like onion." Shoppers can buy the Ninja Foodi 3-in-1 Hand Blender for a better deal on Amazon compared to Ninja's own site. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
