Muhyiddin seeks united Opposition front in Perikatan meeting with eight parties including Pejuang, PSM, Muda — but PAS absent
On Facebook, Muhyiddin said the proposed coalition aims to provide a united opposition front and reinforce the check and balance function in and out of Parliament.
'All those in attendance gave very positive feedback on the proposal,' said Muhyiddin posted.
'God willing, I will present the views raised during this meeting at the upcoming Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council Meeting.'
Among those present were Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, and other PN components — Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai from Gerakan, and Malaysian Indian People's Party president Punithan Paramsiven.
Leaders from Islamist party PAS, also a PN component, were notably absent.
Also attending were Parti Pejuang Tanahair president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) deputy chair S Arutchelvan, and Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) acting president Amira Aisya.
Others included Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) president Datuk Ibrahim Ali, and People's Progressive Party youth chief Sathiah Sudakaran.
Berjasa president Zamani Ibrahim, United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai) president P Ramasamy, and Malaysian Advancement Party president P Waytha Moorthy also took part.
Pejuang, Putra and Berjasa were formerly in the Gerakan Tanah Air coalition, which failed to make inroads in the 15th general election.

ECRL extension from KB to Thai border via Rantau Panjang under study, says Kelantan deputy MB
KOTA BHARU, July 21 — The proposal to extend East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas is still being studied by Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) and the Ministry of Transport. Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said the proposal is seen as relevant as the Malaysian and Thai governments have agreed to revive the existing railway line between Pasir Mas and Sungai Golok under Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to reconnect the railway network between the two countries. He said the Kelantan government is currently proposing that the ECRL line be extended to Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas from Kota Bharu and not to the original line in Tumpat. 'However, it is still under study by MRL and the Ministry of Transport to extend the ECRL line from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas,' he said. He said this when replying to a supplementary question by Mohd Adanan Hassan (PAS-Kelaboran) regarding the state government's efforts to submit a proposal to implement the ECRL to the original alignment, which is Tumpat, at the State Legislative Assembly sitting in Kota Darulnaim Complex today. Earlier, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said his ministry was examining a proposal to extend the ECRL route from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas in Kelantan to strengthen the connection network with Thailand. In a similar development, Mohamed Fadzli said the state government had also drawn up a strategic plan to ensure that development around the ECRL project alignment could be fully utilised, especially in the manufacturing sector which has the potential to boost the economy in the state. 'Among the main plans currently being implemented is the development based on Cargo Oriented Development (COD) at Pasir Puteh Station, which is seen to be able to attract not only private and foreign investments, but will also generate downstream economic chains such as transportation services, packaging and raw material supply. 'In addition, the development based on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at Tunjong Station, Kota Bharu is seen to be able to revive Tunjong as a new township and create an economic ecosystem that is balanced between people's mobility, job opportunities and quality of life,' he said. The ECRL project is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2026 and train services for the Kota Bharu to Gombak, Selangor route will be operational by January 2027, while the second line from Gombak to Port Klang is expected to be completed a year later. — Bernama

Anwar draws ‘red line' on US tariff talks, says pro-Bumiputera policy not up for negotiation
PUTRAJAYA, July 21 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Malaysia will not bow to pressure that could undermine national policies, including negotiations with the United States (US) related to tariffs. He said that although investment and trade with the US are significant, Malaysia has a 'red line' in negotiations — namely the Bumiputera policy — which must not be compromised, even if it is perceived as 'discriminatory' by external parties. In addition, Anwar, who is also the finance minister, stated that procurement and opportunities for local companies must also be protected in negotiations with the US. He added that Malaysia's approach is more thorough and firm in order to safeguard national interests, while continuing to strengthen trade relations with other countries, including China and ASEAN, as a step to expand market access. 'That is our red line in negotiations (on tariffs), which is why our approach is more careful and firm. 'We must continue to trade and engage well with all countries, but no country should be allowed to impose conditions that pressure us,' he said during a monthly meeting with staff of the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) here today. Anwar said that his close ties with world leaders, particularly in Brazil and Egypt, have opened up strategic economic opportunities for Malaysia to strengthen its economic resilience. He stated that as a result of his good relationship with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Petronas was invited to participate in oil exploration and production in the country, while Yinson Holdings is involved in the construction of oil and gas vessels for the Brazilian and Peruvian markets. 'The involvement of Malaysian companies was made easier due to our strong friendship. In addition to increased trade with BRICS countries (the economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), Malaysia is opening new networks for the country's survival, (as we) cannot rely on just one country,' he said. In Egypt, Anwar said his relationship with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also yielded positive results, with the Egyptian government granting Proton the opportunity to make the country a production hub for the north African market. PM: Pondok schools to keep religious core, add AI and TVET components to meet modern needs
PUTRAJAYA, July 21 — The Ministry of Finance (Treasury) has been instructed to explore ways to enhance the capabilities of pondok institutions, including upgrading existing facilities and improving the curriculum to better align with current needs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move is crucial to ensure students are not only grounded in religious knowledge but also equipped to face contemporary challenges, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, gave his assurance that the traditional religious syllabus will remain intact. However, it will be complemented with elements such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), technology, and artificial intelligence (AI). 'We will not interfere with the existing syllabus of pondok institutions, but we will incorporate new components such as TVET and AI. 'It is not about changing the system, but to complement and enhance it with elements that reflect current demands,' he said during a gathering with staff of the Prime Minister's Department here today.
