Drew Barrymore Fondly Remembers Val Kilmer: 'So Nurturing And Kind And Safe'
While chatting with guest Kevin Bacon on her eponymous daytime program, Drew Barrymore fondly reminisced about working with Val Kilmer, who along with director Joel Schumacher, convinced her to star in Batman Forever.
The tender moment came up as The Bondsman star reflected on various old projects of his, including 1990's Flatliners, which the late Schumacher also helmed. Jumping in to bond with her colleague, Barrymore recalled her own fond experience.

'I was friends with Joel Schumacher, the director, who I thought of this morning because it was he and Val Kilmer that pulled me into Batman Forever,' she said. 'And Val Kilmer was so nice to me. He was so nurturing and kind and safe, which was a very important thing for me.' (The 1995 film also starred Nicole Kidman, Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones.)
Bacon chimed in that that was 'probably not that common in those days.'
Barrymore agreed, continuing, 'Yeah, I was like, 'Nobody wants anything from me, they want things for me,' which I thought was really interesting.'
Later on, Bacon brought up his own work experience with the late Top Gun star, who died last week at the age of 65. The two had co-starred on Broadway in 1983 alongside fellow castmates Sean Penn and Jackie Earle Haley in Slab Boys. 'It was great. I just always look at that as one of the great experiences of my life and getting a chance to know him,' he said.
The Juilliard-trained Kilmer — beloved for his wide range as a versatile performer, as well as his genuine personality — died April 1 from pneumonia, after having previously been diagnosed with and recovered from throat cancer, which permanently altered his voice. He was known for his leading turns in films like The Doors, The Saint, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Batman Forever, Tombstone, Thunderheart, Willow and his last credit, Top Gun: Maverick.

As an executive producer and the narrator of Kiss My Grass, a documentary short that premiered last week at Tribeca Film Festival, exploring the underlying roots of racial injustice and inequity in the cannabis space, the actress opened up to Deadline about how seeing the war on drugs 'devastate entire communities' made her want to participate in the project. It was always a thing,' she explained. 'My dad's a white guy and he could grow his weed out on the fire escape. My mom was like, 'OK, that's crazy, you can't do that with the kids.'' Dawson continued, 'But he just grew up in Texas, and kind of just did whatever he wanted, and he always behaved that way. And I understood, and so did my mom, and so did the rest of us in the community, that that was a luxury and a privilege that he had, and that he didn't have any other personal experiences, except for through his friends and his family and people, that this war on drugs had done to devastate entire communities.' Noting that her father was part Indigenous, Dawson explained 'he felt like it was his right, it was something natural.' 'It was incredible being on that journey with him, from watching him when I was a kid,' she added. 'And just feeling like he was privileged to be in California when he got cancer, being able to talk to his doctor and get off of six different medications they wanted to put him on, that he could just use weed for his nausea, for his pain, for his sleeping, and have that conversation directly with his doctor and to see that transformation.' It was an equally personal experience for Mary Pryor, who co-directed the doc alongside Mara Whitehead, in addition to serving as a subject as the co-founder of Cannaclusive, founder of Sheba, Baby! and CMO of Tricolla Farms. 'We're just getting into the weeds of what it is to be marginalized triple time in this space, with chronic health items, and with being Black, and being a woman, and coming from the descendants of the drug war,' explained Pryor. 'Because my dad happened to be affected by the war on drugs, I just felt and saw inequity in a lot of different ways.' Pryor wanted to uncover a 'deeper uncomfortable truth' about the government's mentality around cannabis and the struggles of those who are trying to 'righting the wrongs of the war on drugs.' 'This issue is affecting everyone, and so the decision collectively as directors on this, with Mara, to have not just Black women say what's going on, but have white people and Latina folks and different walks of life confirm that this is not just an isolated incident, is real,' added Pryor. Whitehead, who has a background in impact-driven storytelling, admitted she 'didn't understand the nuances' of racial inequity in cannabis as a white woman who grew up in Colorado, but she 'was shook to my core' after meeting the women involved. 'Because I think so much of this is happening in the dark,' explained Whitehead. 'And when Mary invited me into this space, I think the filmmaking process really was an act of uncovering and unfurling for me in terms of what this story actually entails.' Meeting with other Black women in cannabis, Pryor felt a sense of 'trauma bonding' in hearing their stories. 'Everyone is already dealing with the inequities of existence. And we have to grow together in order to push and lean in on the truth for the sake of getting to the other side, which is all about doing better and treating people with humanity,' she said. Dawson praised 'the bravery and the courage' of the women who shared their experiences in the documentary as well as Pryor for continuing to educate people and 'directing this project long since before the project was fully formed or ideated.' 'It was risky, and the fact that these women were putting everything on the line and risking all of that was just so powerful to me, because ultimately, it isn't just about their individual stories,' added Dawson. 'So many of them, it's about like what Mary's been doing, lifting all those boats with that tide, and I just really, really appreciated that.' Adams concert series offers music for all tastes
Jun. 13—ADAMS — The Adams Community Concert Series presents its 10th season this summer. Attendance has been consistent over the years on Wednesday evenings in July and August as the series has featured a variety of quality music free of charge to the public. This season is no exception, organizers say. On the bill are Big Band tunes, Broadway songs, rock 'n roll, country-western guitar picking, barbershop chorus music and the stirring sounds of the 10th Mountain Division Army Band. The concerts are on six consecutive Wednesday evenings from July 9 to Aug. 13 at the Adams Fire Department pavilion behind the fire hall on Main Street. All concerts start at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 with no intermission. Concert-goers should bring a lawn chair except for one show, scheduled for the Sixtown Meeting House, 27 East Church St., across from Mirabito convenience store in Adams. The meeting house is also the rain venue in the event of inclement weather. The concerts are sponsored by South Jefferson area businesses and individuals, and donations from passing the hat at each show. The series features local talent which the north country has in abundance. Arrhythmias bring a special brand of Big Band music. Formed by a group of Watertown doctors, the Arrhythmias has entertained audiences since 1977. The ensemble brings a repertoire of swing music that transports audiences to earlier eras but which is also timeless and vibrant. The dance floor will be open on July 9. Back by popular demand, on July 16, is tenor Jordan Davidson, accompanied on piano by Toni Grieco Zygadlo, his former music teacher at Indian River High School. This show will be at the Sixtown Meeting Hall where the duo performed a brilliant concert last year. The performance will feature numbers from the American Songbook, Broadway musicals and opera. A high-school music teacher himself, Davidson performs in operas, musical theater, concerts and recitals throughout the country. Popular local musician Ben Wisner and the Full Circle band will share their style of rock and roll with the Adams audience on July 23. Wisner has played at many venues locally through the years and will be joined by Jay Barrett and Tim Robinson, for what promises to be a lively, entertaining show. Next are Loren and L.J. Barrigar. The father-son guitar duo from Central New York play a variety of country, blues, rock and popular music. Loren has performed throughout the world with other virtuoso guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel and Mark Mazengarb. L.J. has become a fabulous guitarist in his own right. The July 30 show will feature intricate acoustic guitar work from both players and some fine singing. The Adams Concert Series will welcome the Northern Blend Chorus on Aug. 6. This a capella female barbershop group based in Watertown is affiliated with Harmony, Inc. Northern Blend won the International Chorus Competition in 2024 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. This is the first time the chorus has performed on the Adams stage. Rounding out the summer in Adams will be the 10th Mountain Division Army Band. The band performs a range of music including marches, Broadway tunes, jazz standards, classical pieces and popular music. The schedule: July 9: Arrhythmias.
