Disbanded after Hema report firestorm, Malayalam film artists' body sees a historic first – a woman as president

For the first time in its three-decade history, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) Friday elected women as its president and general secretary. The election for the new office-bearers was held a year after its 17-member executive committee, headed by Mohanlal, quit in the wake of the Hema committee report and subsequent revelations of sexual misconduct. While Shweta Menon was elected president, Cuckoo Parameswaran is the new general secretary. The former defeated veteran actor Devan, while the latter's rival was Raveendran. The general body also elected Lakshmi Priya as vice-president and Ansiba as joint secretary. Unni Shivapal is the treasurer of the committee, which is elected for the next three years. Shweta told the media that the new committee will bring in changes. 'We will bring in all members who have quit the body. They are most welcome. There are no men or women in the body; all are actors,' she said. The newly elected general secretary said, 'All the 508 members of the AMMA will be taken into confidence before any decision. This body will bring in changes.' Days before the elections, Shweta had faced a case based on a complaint that 'she acted in movies and advertisements involving nudity and made financial gains by misusing her notoriety as a vulgar actor'. The High Court stayed the proceedings in the case, which was allegedly linked to her contest in the AMMA elections. The Hema committee report, which came out a year earlier, had triggered an uproar in the film industry, and the then general secretary of AMMA, Siddique, was forced to quit in the wake of the alleged sexual misconduct. Its joint general secretary, Baburaj, also faced similar allegations. Several prominent actors had openly come out against AMMA, leading to the disbanding of the executive and office-bearers. Shweta is a prominent actress, model, and television anchor, active in the entertainment industry for the last three decades. She debuted in the Malayalam film industry in 1991 in Mamootty-starrer Anaswaram. After being crowned Miss Bangalore, she was adjudged third in the Miss India contest in 1994, which Sushmita Sen won. Twice, she won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress – first for her performance in Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha and then for her role in Salt N' Pepper. Newly elected general secretary Cuckoo started her career as a child artiste. She is also a classical dancer, fashion designer and theatre professional. In 1988, she bagged the second-best actress award in Kerala for her role in Ore Thooval Pakshikal.

Janhvi Kapoor's casting in Param Sundari irks Malayali actor Pavithra Menon: ‘Hum kum talented hote hain?'

Earlier this week, makers of Param Sundari finally dropped the much-awaited trailer of the Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra-starrer. Their fresh chemistry and breezy romance with a hint of comedy reminded many fans of Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express (2013). While some were skeptical about Janhvi's stereotypical accent as a Malayali, a majority of netizens showered love on the trailer, eagerly waiting for Param Sundari to arrive in theatres on August 29. Well, on Independence Day today, Malayali actor Pavithra Menon has questioned Janhvi's casting in the film. Janhvi Kapoor and Pavithra Menon In a re-posted video, which was earlier deleted by Instagram, actor Pavithra Menon states, 'I'm a Malayali and I watched the trailer of Param Sundari, and want to really address this — what's the problem in hiring a proper Malayali actor? Hum kum talented hote hain kya? Mohiniyattam hi kar rahi hoti hai. Aisa nahi hota Kerala mein bhai. Jaise ki main baat kar rahi hun, Hindi mein. I can also speak Malayalam really well.' She went on to ask 'I mean, is it so hard to find a Malayali to play the role in a Hindi movie?' in Malayalam to demonstrate. Pavithra goes on to add, 'You know, humne bhi bade aise cheezein kiye hain, 90s Malayalam filmon mein when we had to show Punjabis 'Balle, balle, balle'. Now its 2025. I think everybody knows how a Malayali talks and how they are as normal as anybody else. We don't wear just jasmin flowers and do Mohiniyattam everywhere, and walk around the office and house. Please, request hai yaar. Thiruvananthapuram agar aap bol nahi sakte naa toh Trivandrum bol do, hum khush ho jaayenge.' Pavithra's post has left the internet divided. Some netizens have lauded her for this video. For instance, a fan shared, 'Superb 👏👏👏👏 very well said. Enough of these silly stereotype 🙌🙌❤️❤️❤️,' whereas another comment read, 'This is the voice of every malayalee who has seen the trailer of 'PARAMA SUNDARI' 😬.' However, some have trolled Pavithra, questioning her stance. One such internet user pointed out, '"Mohiniyattam kar rahi hoti hai" - she's literally playing a mohiniyattam dance teacher in the film. What else is she supposed to do?,' whereas another asked, 'So by your logic, Mrunal Thakur shouldn't have played a Punjabi in Son of Sardar 2, Aishwarya Rai shouldn't play North-Indian characters, and Rashmika, Keerthi Suresh, Parvathy and all should stop working in Bollywood films ?' While Janhvi is playing the role of Sundari from Kerala, Sidharth will be seen as a Delhi boy named Param in Param Sundari. Are you excited to witness this fresh onscreen pair in theatres this month?

Shwetha Menon Scripts History As AMMA's First Female President; Cuckoo Parameshwaran Secures Landmark Win

Last Updated: Shwetha Menon became the first female President of AMMA, with Cuckoo Parameshwaran elected as General Secretary, marking a historic leadership shift. In a landmark moment for the Malayalam film industry, women have, for the first time, won two key posts in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A). Actress Shwetha Menon created history by becoming the first female President of the association, while Cuckoo Parameshwaran became the first woman to be elected General Secretary. Ansiba Hassan was elected unopposed as the Joint Secretary. The elections were held following the resignation of the previous committee, led by Mohanlal, in August 2024. The committee had stepped down after allegations of sexual harassment against some of its office bearers, including Siddique and Babu Raj, surfaced in the controversial Hema Committee report. For the President's post, Shwetha Menon contested against actor-turned-BJP leader Devan. Cuckoo Parameshwaran faced veteran actor Raveendran in the race for General Secretary. Speaking after her victory, Shwetha Menon said, 'Thank you to all the family members. Media, thank you so much for coming. You were all telling till now that we need women at the head of A.M.M.A and now it has happened. Hope we will get the support." In July 2025, nominations for the 17-member executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A), and with nearly 110 nomination forms were taken for the electoral battle. The association currently has around 500 members. Kerala HC recently ordered interim stay on proceedings in FIR against Shwetha Menon Earlier this month, a case was registered against Shwetha Menon based on a complaint alleging that she acted in films and advertisements containing obscene and vulgar content with the intent of earning money. Shwetha approached the Kerala High Court seeking to quash the case, and the court has now quashed further proceedings. The development came at a crucial time, amid Shwetha contesting for the post of president in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (A.M.M.A). The elections were scheduled for August 15. With growing support for her candidature, there was increasing speculation that the association might get a woman president for the first time. Who is Shwetha Menon? An accomplished performer, Shwetha Menon is a two-time winner of the Best Actress award at the Kerala State Film Awards. She has worked extensively in Malayalam and Hindi cinema, and was crowned Femina Miss India Asia Pacific in 1994. Shwetha Menon and Cuckoo Parameshwaran's historic win in top A.M.M.A position marks a significant shift in the leadership of the influential industry body, signalling greater representation for women in Malayalam cinema's governing bodies.
