Apollo Theater Raises Record Breaking Millions at Gala, Honors Legends

Source: Daniel Zuchnik / Getty The nation's iconic Apollo Theater in Harlem announced a record breaking $3.2 million raised at its 2025 Spring gala. The funds will support year-round programming that amplifies artistic excellence, youth education, community engagement and a major renovation of the over 100 year old theater that has launched the careers of thousands of African American artists from Ella Fitzgerald to James Brown to Gladys Knight, H.E.R. D'Angelo, and Lauryn Hill. Its Amateur Night is the genesis for popular shows like American Idol It was a night filled with purpose and praise, honoring music industry titan Clive Davis with the Legacy Award and inducting him into the Apollo's Walk of Fame. Rising from the very same stage she first stepped on as a child, Harlem-born artist and multi-hyphenate Teyana Taylor received the inaugural Innovator Award. Clive Davis: Reviving Icons and Shaping Sound Few figures in the music industry have shaped careers as profoundly—or resuscitated them as masterfully—as Clive Davis. The legendary executive, founder of Arista Records, famously revitalized the careers of two vocal powerhouses: Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. After Aretha Franklin's chart presence had faded by the late 1970s, Davis signed her to Arista in 1980. With an ear toward contemporary production, he paired her with rising producers like Luther Vandross, resulting in the chart-topping Jump to It and the Grammy-winning Freeway of Love . Franklin's resurgence under Davis's leadership marked one of the most celebrated comebacks in music. Equally powerful was Davis's role in returning Dionne Warwick to the top. After a career lull, he signed her to Arista in 1979. Warwick was unsure of her future in music—until Davis stepped in. 'You may be ready to give the business up,' Davis told her, 'but the business is not ready to give you up.' That encouragement led to I'll Never Love This Way Again —a platinum-selling hit—and the landmark anthem ' That's What Friends Are For.' Decades later, Warwick recounted: 'His words still ring in my ear… 'Uh‑uh, young lady. You may be ready to give this industry up, but the industry is not ready to give you up.' Having first performed at the Apollo at just 8 years old, she returned now as a bold and boundary-breaking artist, director, and fashion visionary. Receiving the Innovator Award, Taylor offered heartfelt thanks to the institution that shaped her beginnings: 'Thank you for the village you have placed in my life. I'm filled with so much gratitude.' Her evolution from neighborhood prodigy to industry innovator reflects the very soul of the Apollo's mission—to nurture, elevate, and honor Black brilliance. Brown & Dancers—all brought to life under the direction of musical maestro Adam Blackstone. Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton presented a moving tribute to longtime Apollo supporter entrepreneur Richard Parsons, recognizing his visionary leadership and dedication. And when the formal program ended, Harlem kept dancing—thanks to the return of DJ D-Nice, who transformed 126th Street into a star-studded party pulsing with joy, rhythm, and community love. The Apollo's Next Act: Restoration and Renewal Apollo President and CEO Michelle Ebanks unveiled a bold vision for the theater's future, including an expansive renovation of the historic venue: 'Our education program is reaching more young people than ever… this renovation is part of an evolution set in motion more than a decade ago.' Updates will include new orchestra seating, modern acoustics and lighting, upgraded dressing rooms, and a full restoration of the iconic Apollo marquee—ensuring the venue remains as powerful visually as it is spiritually. The 2025 Apollo Spring Gala was more than a fundraiser—it was a resounding testament to the resilience and ongoing influence of Black music, art, and community. Its success in raising over $3.2 million positions the theater for its next phase, ensuring the Apollo remains a beacon for future generations of artists. Miley Cyrus faces backlash over 'biphobic' comment about JoJo Siwa's relationship with Chris Hughes

Miley Cyrus has faced a backlash from fans after making a remark deemed 'biphobic' about JoJo Siwa's relationship with Chris Hughes. The Something Beautiful singer, 32, was speaking on a panel at Dreamland Pride Festival in New York when she made her comment about the former Dance Mom's star's new romance. 'Enjoy coming out of the closet if this Pride is the time for you,' Cyrus told the crowd as she encouraged them to 'have an amazing Pride'. The ex Hannah Montana star then added: 'Alright, I'm going back to get some more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.' 'I'm going back to the closet to find Jojo Siwa & bring her back out' MILEY 😭 — Miley Cyrus Updates (@MileyCyrusBz) June 8, 2025 She was referencing how Siwa, 22, who identifies as queer, split with her partner Kath Ebbs, 27, after appearing on Celebrity Big Brother in April. During her time on the ITV reality show, Siwa formed a close bond with 32-year-old former Love Island star Chris Hughes and the two have recently confirmed that they are in a relationship. After clips of the incidents ciculated online, many took to social media to voice their shock. 'It's really strange how some bi women can be biphobic, lol,' remarked one person on X, who highlighted how Cyrus identifies as pansexual. Pansexual is a term which Siwa has also used previously and is similar to bisexuality, meaning that you can be attracted to anyone regardless of their gender expression. 'Publicly shaming a young woman exploring her sexuality is abhorrent,' declared another. 'Not just Miley, but all of yall posting 'jokes'.' As a third put in: 'I don't think it's 'funny' to make fun of someone's sexual orientation or gender, but I guess it's perfectly fine if it's directed at someone for not being gay or queer-enough during Pride.' Meanwhile, some tried to argue that Cyrus and Siwa are friends and that she was clearly 'just joking', but others said it still didn't make what she said okay. 'JoJo is getting visceral hate from the community at the moment so Miley doing this, even if it's a joke, is distasteful. especially considering they're meant to be friends,' said one person.

Maya Jama's Love Island outfits are summer style inspo, here's where all her looks are from

Love Island is officially back on our screens for another series, and alongside the usual drama drawing us in night after night, we'll be tuning in to see Maya Jama. Or more specifically, her outfits. Yep, when it comes to the ultimate summer style inspo, you can't beat the TV presenter's drool-worthy wardrobe as she returns yet again to host the reality show. Previous years have seen her don see-through designs, daring cut-out dresses and so much more. Or do we mean less...? You may not have a firepit dumping to attend, but if you – like us – want to recreate these looks on your summer holiday, keep reading for all the deets on exactly where Maya's latest Love Island outfits are from, plus how you can recreate the look for yourself. We'll be updating throughout this latest season where all of Maya's 'fits are from. Go big or go home seemed to be the message as Maya appeared on screen on three (!!) separate occasions, obvs wearing a different outfit each time. First up was this gorge vintage Versace ensemble consisting of a plunging scoop-neck pink printed swimsuit and coordinating scarf sarong, with a second scarf worn in her hair as a headband. A gold chain belt made up of starfish and shell motifs was slung low around her hips. The entire look was modelled on Claudia Schiffer who wore something incredibly similar to walk the Italian fashion house's 1991 runway show. Maya finished her debut outfit with a gold shell cuff and Chloé shell drop earrings. Next up, for her entrance into the villa, Maya opted for another vintage find. This time, a 2004 Roberto Cavalli black backed strappy midi dress decorated all over with a multicoloured floral print. And finally, for her return to the villa later that evening, Maya donned a black bodysuit with a see-through, ruched tulle overall that fell all the way to the floor. The naked dress featured intricate embroidery across the hips, depicting green vines with yellow flower buds. Maya accessorised the look with a statement bejewelled gold crucifix necklace. We've seen some *major* looks from Maya over the years, so have rounded up our favourites of all time. Hello to this stunning – and oh so see-through – Norma Kamali shirred gown that Maya layered over a black balconette bralette and coordianting high-leg thong. Maya kicked off the first spin-off series of Love Island: All Stars wearing this gorgeous Mixedgals Marcia maxi dress. Another see-through number, the white sheer fabric was adorned with 3D flowers to nail the corsage trend. To kick off series 10, Maya rocked up to the infamous villa wearing Cult Gaia's Accalia backless white crochet dress. Winter Love Island might not have the same buzz as the OG summertime show, but thankfully, Maya made sure to pull out all the stops with her wardrobe. Especially as it was her debut hosting, taking the reins from Laura Whitmore. She kicked off the show in this black halterneck maxi that had SO many cut-outs and negative space panels. Half dress, half bikini, the Monot dress was from Annie's Ibiza. Follow Alex on Instagram. Alexandria Dale is the Digital Fashion Writer at Cosmopolitan UK.
