A special court here has allowed the release of properties worth Rs 66.33 crore, owned by fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi and his sister Purvi Modi and attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the multi-crore PNB fraud case. The court allowed the application filed by the Punjab National Bank (PNB) seeking to release the properties so that they can be sold or auctioned to recover the dues. The central agency had attached these properties in connection with a money laundering probe against Modi and others in the PNB fraud case.Special judge A V Gujarathi, assigned to hear cases pertaining to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), in its order passed on June 17, however directed the bank to furnish an undertaking that the amount (at which the property would be sold) would be recovered if required in the future. The properties include jewellery, coins, watches and cash that were found at Modi's house in Samudra Mahal in Mumbai's Worli area worth Rs 40.83 crore, a flat valued at Rs 19.50 crore in Purvi's name in the metropolis, and other unvalued movable properties recovered from Modi's Worli house. The consortium of Banks, led by the PNB, claimed that they have suffered a cumulative loss of more than Rs 8,526 crore due to the fraud committed by Nirav Modi and his associates. It is more than the total value of the properties (approximately Rs 2,324.97 crore), which have been attached by the ED under the provisions of the PMLA, 2002.The ED said it has no objection if the properties were exempted from attachment, subject to certain conditions. After recording their submissions, the court noted that Modi still remains absconding and allowed the bank's plea for the release of the properties.Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are the prime accused in the Rs 13,500-crore PNB scam. While Choksi is fighting for his bail in a Belgium court, Modi has been languishing in a London jail since 2019.

Elderly bookstore owner in Delhi loses Rs 15 lakh in fake electricity bill scam
New Delhi: An 80-year-old owner of a bookstore in New Delhi's Connaught Place lost Rs 15 lakh after falling victim to an elaborate cyber scam in which he was threatened by the fraudster that the power supply to his establishment would be cut. The fraud happened on June 16 when the elderly man got a WhatsApp call from a person posing as an official of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). The caller alleged that the electricity bill was not paid for a significant period. He issued a stern warning that power to the shop would be disconnected within 30 minutes unless immediate payment was made. The victim, a resident of Jor Bagh, Lodhi Road, was working in his shop in Connaught Place when the call came. It made him anxious. "Thereafter, while I was still on the WhatsApp call, I received a link to an invoice for Rs 12 on my WhatsApp. I was extremely frightened and overwhelmed by his threatening tone and urgent demands, which compelled me to click on the link to pay the bill immediately. However, I informed him that I do not use any form of netbanking or UPI applications for making payments. In response, he insisted that I provide my credit or debit card details instead. Feeling intense pressure and fear due to his persistent and intimidating behaviour, I reluctantly shared my bank credit card information with him," the complainant said. Within minutes of the call ending, his phone was bombarded with transaction alerts showing unauthorised debits amounting to nearly Rs 15.45 lakh from his bank account. Realising the enormity of the breach, the victim immediately contacted his bank, requesting a freeze on his credit card and account to prevent further losses. On June 17, the victim lodged a complaint at Connaught Place police station.

Himanta hands over job letters to 481 candidates
Guwahati: Assam chief minister on Thursday distributed appointment letters to 481 candidates in the animal husbandry and veterinary, tourism, and education departments. About another 40,000 appointments in the offing and will be distributed in a single recruitment drive scheduled for Oct 10. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With the inclusion of these 481 appointments, the total number of govt jobs secured under the present administration now stands at 1,20,840. Speaking on the occasion, Sarma expressed confidence that the state govt is well on course to reach a total of 1.60 lakh appointments by 10 Oct and emphasised that the transparent nature of this recruitment process has not only upheld merit, but also played a vital role in fostering a more robust educational ecosystem across the state. He said the animal husbandry sector has increasingly become a pillar of the rural economy, but Assam still lags behind other states in fully realising its potential. "To address this, the govt has partnered with the National Dairy Development Board to establish the North East Dairy and Foods Limited, which aims at producing, processing, and distributing 10 lakh litres of milk daily," he said. He added that the College of Veterinary Science, in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board, is working to develop a new breed by crossbreeding Assam's indigenous Lakhimi cows with Gujarat's high-yielding Gir breed. Alongside livestock development, the chief minister emphasised the state's renewed focus on poultry and duck farming, noting that 90% of Assam's daily egg demand is currently met through imports. He also highlighted a national campaign to promote biogas and bio-CNG production, adding that efforts are underway to enable dairy enterprises to generate these from cattle dung — an initiative poised to offer farmers a valuable supplementary income stream. Tantrik held in Telangana in triple homicide, robbery case
1 2 Jaipur: Bikaner police Wednesday arrested a self-proclaimed tantrik in Telangana, on the run after allegedly killing three men in Bikaner's Khajuwala area by lacing the 'prasad' with poison during a black magic ritual. Two of his accomplices were also caught from different locations in Uttar Pradesh. The tantrik, who was taken into custody is being brought to Bikaner. The accused, M Shiva, went to Khajuwala claiming he could double people's money using occult rituals. On June 12, during a ritual held at the home of one Ghaffar Khan, Shiva served a halwa laced with poison as part of the ceremony. The incident led to the deaths of Ghaffar Khan, Shaitan Singh, and Vikram Singh. Shaitan and Vikram were allegedly members of the same group that plotted the fraud. The day after the incident, Ghaffar Khan's family realised they were cheated. They beat Shiva, took Rs 50 lakh from him, and threw him out of the house. Police later recovered the money and tracked Shiva to Nizamabad in Telangana with the help of local police. His accomplices — Dharmendra from Azamgarh and Jitendra Tiwari from Gorakhpur — were located and arrested in Uttar Pradesh. According to police, the group was part of a network of conmen who promised to double money through black magic. Shiva had links with Manoj Verma from Jharkhand, who was connected to Dharmendra and Jitendra. Another member, Ramswaroop from Jodhpur, was in contact with Shaitan Singh from Ajmer. Shaitan was known to Ghaffar Khan, who lived in Khajuwala. Together, they planned to cheat victims of Rs one crore by including Vikram Singh from Ajmer in their scheme. On June 6, Shiva and his driver reached Ajmer, while the others came separately. Shiva later visited Jaipur, and the entire group assembled in Khajuwala by June 10. Police have arrested three other people in the case — Ramswaroop from Jodhpur, Ghaffar Khan's son-in-law Mustaq, and his nephew Yusuf. Mustaq remains in police remand till June 19. Ramswaroop and Yusuf were presented in court Wednesday and sent to four-day police remand.
