Wynne Evans announces new project after Strictly scandal with promise to fans
Wynne Evans has unveiled a bold new career move after a turbulent year that saw him axed from both the BBC and the Strictly Come Dancing live tour.
The opera singer, 53, who became a household name thanks to his booming vocals in the GoCompare adverts, has announced he's opening his own restaurant in his hometown of Carmarthen. He has promised that fans can look forward to "MasterChef dishes on the menu".
Wynne took to Instagram to share the news, telling his followers: "Hello, Wynne here. This is my hometown of Carmarthen. It is ever-changing and one thing that is changing is the Welsh House. It's going to become the Welsh House by Wynne.
"I promise you it will have MasterChef dishes on the menu, it's going to have a fabulous warm welcome and I want you to come and see me, OK? It's going to be the home of the radio show too. So I'll see you soon. I'd better get cooking."
It is understood that Wynne struck a deal to take over the existing Welsh House venue, with a source telling The Sun: "It's a prime location in the centre of Carmarthen. He is trying to capitalise on his MasterChef win apparently."
Wynne's announcement comes after a rocky few months that saw his career with the BBC come to an abrupt end. The star, who won the Celebrity MasterChef trophy in 2023, was embroiled in controversy after he was kicked off the Strictly Come Dancing live tour earlier this year.
He made a comment that was deemed sexually inappropriate during a photocall, which sparked a four-month investigation by the BBC into his behaviour.
Wynne, who performed on Strictly last year with dance partner Katya Jones, 36, had already been forced to apologise during his time on the show for an incident where he was pictured with his hand on Katya's waist which she then pushed away. Both later told fans it was an inside joke.
While on tour, he faced further backlash for "inappropriate and unacceptable" language after using the term "spit roast" in reference to host Janette Manrara. Wynne has since insisted the phrase was actually a nickname for his co-star Jamie Borthwick, and "wasn't meant sexually".
After the scandal, Wynne stepped back from both the tour and his BBC Radio Wales show, saying in a statement at the time: "I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection."
Last month, Wynne confirmed he would not be returning to his BBC Radio Wales programme, revealing that the broadcaster had decided not to renew his contract. He shared an emotional message with fans, writing: "From the very depths of my heart - thank you. These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know."
He added: "It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. That show wasn't just work—it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family."
However, Wynne is determined not to disappear from the airwaves entirely, and went on to announce his plans to launch an independent radio show, telling fans: "But here's what I believe with everything I've got: what we built cannot end here. So - deep breath - here goes… We're getting the band back together.
"The Wynne Evans Show is coming back, live every day from 9am - 12pm on a new app, on Alexa and Google (we don't have to say 'smart speaker' anymore!) and at www.wynneevansshow.co.uk. This is our next adventure. And I need you more than ever. We will have great music, my question of the day, the mystery voice, your soundtrack stories and so much more, because we have each other again."

A BBC Radio Wales presenter has died in a car crash during a family holiday. Lynda Shahwan, 53, died while in Canada with her husband and their two sons. The mother, from Heath, in Cardiff, had created and co-presented allotment podcast Terry Walton's Plotcast. Paying tribute to his co-host, Mr Walton said the last two years working with Ms Shahwan had been 'the most fulfilling and cherished broadcasting I have done'. 'We pass our sympathies on to Lynda's husband Sharif, their two sons and all of the family on the tragic and sudden taking of Lynda from us far too soon,' he said. Mr Walton said he and Ms Shahwan had become 'true friends and after recording we would both relax and discuss many aspects of life'. He added: 'Our chemistry and her creative talent made every episode a gem of gardening knowledge. Such fun whilst still being very informative. 'Her professionalism and easy going manner made every recording a pleasure and brought the best out of us both.' Ms Shahwan had worked for Radio Wales for more than 25 years. Head of Radio Wales Carolyn Hitt said: 'Lynda was a very special person. 'Since she began her career with Radio Wales in 1999 she made a brilliant impact on the station, on and off air, working across almost all of our output. 'For several years, Lynda was Roy Noble's fellow presenter on his morning show, where he affectionately christened her 'The Lily from Caerphilly'. 'More recently, Lynda was back in front of the mic once more, this time with Terry Walton, co-presenting and producing her fantastic passion project the Plotcast - just one of the many examples of her creativity and innovation. 'We are all devastated at Radio Wales at the sudden loss of our much-loved colleague and friend and our hearts go out to Lynda's husband Sharif - who is also a much-loved colleague - their two sons and all their family and friends.' Veteran BBC broadcaster Roy Noble added: 'Our feelings of condolence go to Lynda's family, Sharif and the boys. 'It was a sudden, sudden loss to them and something we in Radio Wales cannot process. 'Her legacy will be always, always remembered.'

Successful Powys farmers scoop rosettes at Royal Welsh Show
The Powys couple who have been hugely successful at the Royal Welsh Show have picked up another pile of rosettes. Wynne and Linda Morgan who run the Ty Isaf farm near Newtown, took four more titles adding to a long history of success at the show for their British Blue cattle. 'We have done really well,' said Linda. 'Our bull was the male champion, the cow was first in her class, and our young heifer, who is just over 12 months old, she was reserve female and reserve overall champion. 'We are very pleased it's been very, very good. ' This adds to the couple's history of success after they won overall champion in British blue in 2014 for Ty Isaf Iesha Et who is related to their currently very successful herd. Unfortunately, this year the effect of the bluetongue restrictions across the Welsh border has limited their usual show schedule. 'We have been exhibiting at the Royal Welsh since 1989,' said Linda. 'To us it is quite local so we like to support it. 'This year because of the bluetongue restrictions it has been all Welsh exhibitors here. There are a few exceptions but there are a lot less competitors this year. 'It's going to impact us because we can't go over the border now into Shropshire, we usually do the Minsterley show but we can't go now. This will be out only one this year which is a shame.' Meet Ben - South Wales contestant on BBC's new Destination X
Destination X will be hosted by Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon, and is described as a mix between The Traitors and Race Across the World. The new series will see contestants travel around Europe on a bus with blacked-out windows, trying to work out where in the world they are. At the end of each episode, the contestants will guess where they think they are, placing an X on a map. Whoever puts their X furthest away from the location is immediately thrown off the X-bus and eliminated from the competition. The last person standing will walk away with a cash prize of £10,000. Meet Ben - the South Wales contestant taking part in Destination X One of the 13 contestants taking part in series one of Destination X is 42-year-old Surf School Director, Ben, who hails from South Wales. Ben has "20 years' experience of doing some crazy activities" including the likes of surfing and cliff jumping. He is now looking to take part in Destination X to show his boys "that Dad's still got it". When asked why he thought he was selected by the BBC for the show, Ben said: "I have experience and am fairly capable in outdoor activities. "Being a surfer, you're used to dealing with lots of situations very quickly. A lot of my friends define me as affable. I get on with people quite well. "I've just spent a few weeks in a caravan with my family so can handle confined spaces." The 42-year-old has maintained a level of fitness, ready for the show, and mentally has been treating it "as if I was going to prison". Top 10 best British TV series Ben explained: "I'll be cut off from everybody and have got to deal with new people and environments that might be testing and challenging. "It'd be nicer to think I'm going to space as an astronaut." He said the thought of being away from his family, with no contact, for so long was making him anxious. "That's one of the things I might struggle with. The longest I've spent away from my kids in 10 years is five days, and in that time, I still spoke to them," Ben added. "But I'm looking forward to not having to check my phone and to having real conversations with people." His plan to win Destination X and take home the £100k is to "not think too hard about it". Ben explained: "Sometimes I will overthink things to a point that I come up with the wrong answer. "So I want to be myself, have fun with it and try to lead with my gut." If he wins, Ben said he would put the £100k towards helping his local community. He said: "My whole life I've put people first, above money. "But there is that conundrum that the communities I support are constantly looking for funding so it would help. "There's a number of accessible bits of equipment I'd like to design and build, and that money would give me freedom to be able to make that happen." Rob Brydon says "I'd be hopeless" on Destination X Rob Brydon also opened up about his time on Destination X, revealing why he wanted to be a part of the show and how he would have fared on the BBC series. The Gavin & Stacey star said: "I've never done a TV show on this scale before. I loved the idea of it, the combination of having to work out clues as to where you are and having to get on with each other. "It struck me as the best bits of The Traitors with the best bits of Race Across the World. "The other thing that attracted me was the scale of it and being a part of a show as ambitious as this, with as huge a crew and as huge a team. "I knew it would be a real challenge to see if I could steer that ship." Rob Brydon said he was surprised at how invested he became in the show. "You get involved with the contestants and you feel for them when they are struggling, and you celebrate with them when they do well. "It was a far more involving experience than I was expecting." When asked about how he would fare on Destination X, Brydon commented: "I think I would be hopeless at the game, I would not have a clue and would be cruelly exposed as being not too bright at all!" "They have nice bunks but nonetheless you're sleeping on a bus. You lose your privacy; I would have found that very difficult indeed."
