He said the family is likely to request an inquest once police investigations are complete.

The medical team expressed surprise at the preserved condition of Zara's body, and briefed the family immediately after the procedure. The examination lasted from 11.30am to 7.30pm without breaks, led by forensic pathology specialist Dr Khairul Anuar Zainun from Hospital Serdang. Shahlan and fellow lawyer Hamid Ismail took turns observing the process, while Zara's mother and siblings waited nearby.
Advertisement Hamid thanked the forensic team for their dedication, noting they remained on their feet throughout and documented both old and recent injuries. He said the preliminary report may be ready within a week, with the full process potentially taking up to two months. The body was returned to Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Sipitang for reburial the same evening, following its exhumation the day before under a court order for a second post-mortem. Zara died on July 17 in circumstances her family believes are linked to bullying, a case that has drawn public attention and calls for accountability in Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KOTA KINABALU – The Federal police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has dismissed a viral social media claim that the mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir was behind her daughter's death. A press conference led by CID Director Datuk M. Kumar on Wednesday confirmed that the 'plot twist' shared online in recent weeks was untrue. Zara Qairina - Photo credit: X In a statement issued on Thursday, the legal team representing Zara's mother, Noraidah Lamat, 45, said the allegations were a 'malicious and vile' narrative aimed at defaming their client and the deceased teenager. 'The press conference proves that the 'plot twist' which went viral a few weeks ago on various media platforms, alleging that our client was the cause of Zara's death, is not true. "The 'plot twist' is a malicious and vile narrative created to slander our client and Zara,' the lawyers said. The legal team thanked Kumar and his special task force for their swift action in investigating the case. They also urged anyone with information to assist the police. 'To any individual who has information that can assist the police investigation, we appeal for you to step forward and share the information with them. If you are afraid or require assistance in doing so, you may meet with us. 'Lastly, we thank and appreciate all Malaysians who have supported and prayed for justice for Zara. At the same time, refrain from making untrue speculations about Zara's death," he said. The statement was signed by lawyers Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh and Farrah Nasser. Zara Qairina, 13, was found unconscious on July 16 after reportedly falling from the third floor of her religious school hostel in Papar. She was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI). Her death drew significant public concern, particularly on social media, amid allegations of a bullying incident at the school.

Russia restricts WhatsApp, Telegram calls over fraud, ‘terrorism' claims

MOSCOW, Aug 14 — Russia announced curbs on calls on the WhatsApp and Telegram messenger apps on Wednesday, saying that this was necessary to fight criminality, state media reported. 'In order to combat criminals, measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messaging apps (WhatsApp and Telegram),' communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said, as quoted by the RIA and TASS news agencies. The messenger apps have become 'the main voice services used for fraud and extortion, and for involving Russian citizens in subversive and terrorist activities,' the watchdog added. Russian security services have frequently claimed that Ukraine was using Telegram to recruit people or commit acts of sabotage in Russia. Moscow wants the messengers to provide access to data upon request from law enforcement, not only for fraud probes but also for investigating activities that Russia describes as terrorist ones. 'Access to calls in foreign messengers will be restored after they start complying with Russian legislation,' Russia's digital ministry said. In a statement sent to AFP, Telegram said it 'actively combats misuse of its platform, including calls for sabotage or violence, as well as fraud' and removes 'millions of pieces of harmful content every day'. Since launching its offensive in Ukraine, Russia has drastically restricted press freedom and freedom of speech online. 'WhatsApp is private, end-to-end encrypted, and defies government attempts to violate people's right to secure communication, which is why Russia is trying to block it from over 100 million Russian people,' a spokesperson for Meta-owned WhatsApp told AFP. More than 100 million people in Russia use WhatsApp for messages and calls, and the platform is concerned that this is an effort to push them onto platforms more vulnerable to government surveillance, according to the spokesperson. — AFP
