TIPRA Motha MLA says ready to withdraw support from BJP govt; party chief denies

AGARTALA: An MLA of Tripura's ruling alliance partner TIPRA Motha on Saturday said the party was ready to withdraw support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government and walk alone, citing the government's failure to control illegal immigration and fulfill promises made in the tripartite Tiprasa Accord last year. TIPRA Motha MLA and rebel-turned political leader Ranjit Debbarma said they had waited for 1.5 years since the accord was signed to reach an amicable solution to problems of history, land rights, political rights, economic development, identity, culture, language etc. faced by tribals without any progress and decided to withdraw support unless the accord is implemented soon.
However, TIPRA Motha founder and supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma told journalists that he wasn't aware of the statements made by Ranjit Debbarma and added that he would inquire about it. He also said that he had a word with chief minister Manik Saha about 'genuine frustration' among tribals centering the pending Tiprasa Accord and added that the CM had promised him to take up the matter with the central government at the right platform to ensure amicable resolutions.
Speaking to reporters, MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who was the chief of the dreaded insurgent outfit All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) before returning to normal life and winning the assembly elections two years ago, said: 'What's the benefit of even staying a part of the government? We never left our core demand of Greater Tipraland. Meanwhile, the 125th amendment bill, by-election for vacant seats in the ADC council, ADC village council polls haven't been held yet (long after they were scheduled to be held). We have waited to see some progress in the Tiprasa Accord but there is no progress till now. We are ready to withdraw support and leave the government. We shall be joining the central government for discussion for one last time this month before deciding.'
He also claimed that 13 MLAs of the tribal party, its ministers and even BJP MP Kriti Devi Debbarma, the younger sister of Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma who joined BJP shortly before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and won the Parliamentary polls afterwards, were ready to resign from their positions.
Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said, 'I have spoken to chief minister Dr. Manik Saha and communicated the genuine frustration among tribals in the villages due to unfulfillment of the Tiprasa Accord. I also discussed the large number of illegal immigrants coming inside Tripura from Bangladesh amidst the prevailing situation there. The CM has assured me that he would take it up at the right platform to ensure proper resolution to the accord.'
Asked if his party would take the hard line if the accord isn't fulfilled shortly, Pradyot Kishore said he would like to repose faith in the CM considering the latter has assured him to personally take up the issue with New Delhi.
Former chief minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb said he feels Ranjit Debbarma isn't the right person to declare policy for TIPRA Motha and considering that Motha is a ruling alliance partner of BJP, whatever Pradyot Kishore says is considered as the tribal party's policy.
However, opposition leader and CPI(M) politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury came out in stark criticism of the ruling alliance and said BJP and TIPRA Motha fixed the alliance despite not agreeing on many issues and such a disagreement was bound to happen. He, however, said that he wouldn't comment anymore on the internal difference of decision within Motha.
The BJP now has nine ministers in the 12 member cabinet in Tripura, while IPFT has one minister and TIPRA Motha has one cabinet minister and one minister of state.

Bengal man facing Assam NRC heat shows parents' vote proof

1 2 Jalpaiguri: Cooch Behar resident Uttam Kumar Brajabashi, who received an NRC notice from the Assam govt asking him to prove his Indian citizenship by July 15 or face deportation, produced documents on Monday which showed that his parents, Narendranath Brajabashi and Sabitri, were voters in Dinhata. In Jan, 50-year-old Brajabashi received a notice from Assam govt accusing him of being an illegal immigrant who entered India through the Bangladesh border between 1966 and 1971. The notice claimed Brajabashi was unable to present required documents during police verification. North Bengal development minister Udayan Guha, who has stepped in to help Brajabashi, said on Monday: "Brajabashi was born in 1975. Surprisingly, the Assam govt asked for his documents from 1966 to 1971. We have asked him to not pay heed to the notice. We will stand by him and provide him support." Trinamool Congress, in a statement, said: "The BJP-governed Assam govt has now sent an NRC notice to Uttam Kumar Brajabashi, a man who has never even visited Assam. He possesses documents showing that his father's name was included in the 1966 electoral roll. How does Assam govt send such an undemocratic notice to one of our Rajbanshi brothers."

Nadda appoints Pathankot MLA Ashwani Sharma as Punjab unit's working president

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday appointed Ashwani Kumar Sharma, an MLA from Pathankot, as the working president of its state unit. BJP national president J P Nadda made the appointment. Sharma, 61, is a seasoned party leader who has served as the state BJP president twice in the past — from February 2010 to January 2013 — and again from January 2020 to July 2023. His role as state BJP chief was under scanner during his last stint as it was a time when farm laws were passed by the central government, which led to major agitation, with Punjab being the epicentre of protest. State BJP leaders were at the receiving end of the Punjab farmers. In September 2020, the SAD also parted its ways with the BJP over the now repealed farm laws. While Sharma takes over as the working president, Sunil Jakhar continues to serve as the president of the Punjab BJP. Jakhar, who had joined BJP in May 2022 after quitting the Congress, was appointed state president in July 2023, succeeding Sharma. However, after the Lok Sabha polls, Jakhar had offered to resign, but the BJP high command did not accept his resignation. Sources revealed that though Jakhar had become somewhat inactive for a few months, he continued to raise key issues concerning Punjab and was seen with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on multiple occasions — including at a family event in Delhi this March. In recent months, Jakhar has once again become more active in the state's political landscape. Party insiders note that under BJP norms, a state president's term usually lasts three years, which means Jakhar's tenure is likely to continue till July 2026. Whether Sharma's appointment will lead to a change of guard remains to be seen. Interestingly, sources pointed out that the party has not traditionally had a working president in Punjab and only a state president used to be appointed. The move gains significance as it comes at a time when the party's Punjab affairs in-charge, Vijay Rupani, tragically died in a plane crash in Ahmedabad last month, leaving that key post vacant. The Pathankot MLA, a dedicated RSS member and a founder member of the BJP in Punjab, is being seen as a representative voice for the party's original cadre. A former member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — the BJP's student wing — during his college days in Pathankot, Sharma has served in multiple key roles including as general secretary of Punjab BJP from 2007 to 2010. An experienced legislator, he won the Pathankot Assembly seat in 2012 and again in 2022, losing only once in 2017 to Congress's Amit Vij. Recently, he was also handling the campaign of BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta in the Ludhiana West bypoll where the party finished third.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey alleges British involvement in Op Bluestar

Amritsar: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey from Jharkhand has claimed that Britain assisted India in executing the 1984 Operation Bluestar at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, stoking a new controversy. In a post on X on Monday, Dubey alleged that then PM Indira Gandhi "launched an attack on the Golden Temple in collaboration with Britain", with British Army officers present in Amritsar. He uploaded a classified British document, "Sikh Community", claiming that on Feb 23, 1984, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office mentioned in a letter that the Indian govt had sought British advice over a plan to remove Sikh extremists from the Golden Temple. The letter mentioned that "an operation by the Indian authorities at the Golden Temple could, in the first instance, exacerbate communal tension in Punjab. It might also, therefore, increase tension in the Indian community here, particularly if knowledge of the SAS involvement were to become public." It further stated, "The foreign secretary decided to respond favourably to the Indian request and, with the Prime Minister's agreement, an SAS officer visited India and drew up a plan which was approved by Gandhi. The foreign secretary believes that the Indian govt may put the plan into operation shortly." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Show Off Your Talent: Enter the Ultimate Creator Contest! Tocsin Media & Marketing LLC Undo Various UK-based Sikh bodies have been demanding an investigation into the role of the alleged British govt in Operation Bluestar, even as the Centre has denied the claims. Not a secret: Pb BJP spokesperson Punjab BJP spokesperson Sarchand Singh has supported the claims made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey regarding the alleged involvement of British forces during the military action at Golden Temple in June 1984. Reacting to Dubey's X post, Sarchand said that this fact is well known and not hidden. There is nothing secret about the matter, and the involvement of foreign assistance is already in the public domain, he added. Sarchand further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the Lok Sabha on Aug 10, 2023, had already referred to the 1984 operation at Golden Temple as an "attack", acknowledging its grave and controversial nature.
