Ayurveda's possible cure for Parkinson's disease-- Here's what it is

Time of India19-06-2025
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects a person's movement, coordination, and balance over time. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine— a chemical messenger— are damaged or die.
Common symptoms include tremors, stiffness, slowed movement, and difficulty with balance or speech. While there is no cure for Parkinson's disease, certain treatments can help manage symptoms. These include medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and lifestyle changes-- they can also improve quality of life.
And now, in a significant breakthrough,
Patanjali's latest research
has shown promising results for people suffering from Parkinson's disease.
Their Ayurvedic formulation, Neurogrit Gold, has been found to not only support memory recovery but also increase lifespan—without affecting growth or reproduction—in C. elegans, a widely used model organism in scientific research.
This groundbreaking study has been published in the international journal titled CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics, which is a part of the Wiley group. The research bridges the gap between ancient Ayurvedic knowledge and modern medical science.

Acharya Balkrishna, Co-founder of Patanjali, expressed hope for millions battling Parkinson's disease. 'This condition doesn't just affect the brain—it also isolates individuals from their daily lives and relationships,' he said. 'But with the right approach, recovery and independent living are absolutely possible.'
He emphasised that Neurogrit Gold is a blend of time-tested Ayurvedic ingredients and modern scientific validation that works as a powerful medication against Parkinson's.
The formulation includes medicinal herbs such as Jyotishmati and Giloy. They are combined with classical Ayurvedic bhasmas like Ekangveer Ras, Moti Pishti, Rajat Bhasma, Vasant Kusumakar Ras, and Rasraj Ras— all known for their beneficial effects on neurological health.
Here are some benefits of consuming these Ayurvedic medicines:
1. Jyotishmati is known to enhance memory, sharpen focus, and support nervous system health.
2. Giloy boosts immunity, reduces inflammation, and helps manage stress and oxidative damage, supporting overall cognitive and physical well-being.
3. Ekangveer Ras supports nerve health, reduces pain, and improves neuromuscular coordination.
4. Moti Pishti cools the body, boosts heart health, and calms the mind.
5. Rajat Bhasma enhances memory, improves immunity, supports neurological and cardiovascular health.
6. Vasant Kusumakar Ras boosts vitality, manages diabetes, supports nerves, heart, and reproductive health.
7. Rasraj Ras strengthens nerves, improves brain function, boosts energy, relieves neurological disorders.
Dr. Anurag Varshney, Vice-President and Chief Scientist at Patanjali Research Foundation, explained that this is the first time an Ayurvedic product has been tested on C. elegans in such a novel study. The results are a milestone for both Ayurveda and neuroscience.
He further explained the mechanism behind the findings. Dopamine, a vital neurotransmitter in the brain, is responsible for controlling movement and coordination.
In Parkinson's disease, dopamine production declines, leading to tremors and memory issues. This new Ayurvedic medicine helped by reducing oxidative stress and enhancing the activity of critical genes like pink-1 and pdr-1, which are involved in mitochondrial health, and cat-2, which is essential for dopamine synthesis.
This study demonstrates how natural remedies, when evaluated through scientific methods, can lead to revolutionary health solutions. For those struggling with neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's, this research offers renewed hope and a potential new line of treatment rooted in both tradition and innovation.

Mumbai doctors warn of surge in leptospirosis cases after 2 days of heavy rainfall

Mumbai: As heavy rainfall brought the city to a standstill for two consecutive days, doctors are warning of a potential rise in leptospirosis cases. The infection spreads through water contaminated with animal urine in waterlogged areas. It can enter the body through small cuts or abrasions as people wade through flooded streets often to reach their workplaces or homes. The city, which reports a high burden of leptospirosis every monsoon, recorded 143 cases in July. In August alone, BMC data shows that 72 cases have already been reported. When left untreated, the infection can spiral out of control quickly. Among those diagnosed this month was the 21-year-old daughter of Prakash Gaonkar, a taxi driver from Reay Road. She was hospitalised for a week after developing acute respiratory distress syndrome due to leptospirosis. The family spent about Rs 2.5 lakh at a private hospital to save her life. "She had some cuts on her feet through which she was infected. I appeal to everyone not to ignore even a mild fever after heavy rains," said Gaonkar. Year after year, though, doctors continue to witness such cases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Medical Mystery Solved: Dementia and Memory Loss Has Been Linked To This Common Thing. Memory Health Click Here Undo Dr Anuj Tiwari, a physician at Cooper Hospital, said the problem with most monsoon illnesses is that their symptoms overlap. "Patients mistake their condition for something mild and delay treatment until it becomes worse. We have seen very severe cases, even fatalities because of lepto," he said. Dr Anita Mathews, an infectious disease specialist at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, said while most leptospirosis patients show mild symptoms, the 1% to 2% who develop severe disease can still turn out to be a large number when infections are widespread. She added that even without cuts, prolonged exposure to contaminated water can be enough for transmission, as skin becomes vulnerable when it softens and shrivels. There are ways to prevent it soon after exposure. Community health workers under the BMC distribute post-exposure prophylaxis, doxycycline, in waterlogged areas as soon as the storm passes. A community health volunteer in Bandra told TOI this could not be done as widespread due to continuous heavy rains and waterlogging on Tuesday but will be taken up the next day. Dr Preeti Chhabria, director of the department of medicine at H N Reliance Hospital, added the benefits of doxycycline far outweigh risks such as antibiotic resistance. "Prolonged and frequent consumption can be a problem but in such instances, it is much needed," she said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Supreme Court Dismisses IMA Petition Against Patanjali Misleading Ads

On August 11, 2025, the Supreme Court has rejected a petition filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The IMA had claimed that Patanjali Ayurved's advertisements were misleading and harmed modern medicine. Rule 170 and AYUSH Advertising: On July 1, 2024, the AYUSH Ministry removed Rule 170, which required state approval before advertising Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Unani medicines. In August 2024, the Supreme Court temporarily restored the rule. Supreme Court Decision: Justice K.V. Viswanathan said that once the Centre removes a rule, states cannot enforce it. Justice B.V. Nagarathna suggested closing the case since the main reliefs sought by the IMA were already addressed. The court emphasized that a rule removed by the Centre cannot be reinstated by the court. Earlier Actions: The court examined Patanjali's misleading ads and regulatory inaction. Contempt proceedings against Patanjali were closed after repeated apologies. The court warned that banning ads or granting approvals for AYUSH medicines could encourage unfair trade practices.
