BJP planning mass closure of Mohalla clinics, claims AAP
New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday accused the Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, of planning the closure of hundreds of Mohalla Clinics across the city, a move that could leave thousands of healthcare workers unemployed.
AAP Delhi State Convenor Saurabh Bhardwaj claimed that thousands of doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and multi-tasking staff working in Mohalla Clinics gathered at the Chief Minister's Janta Darbar in a desperate attempt to save their jobs.
'These employees have been seeking a meeting with the Chief Minister for several days, but were denied an audience. Left with no option, they decided to appear in person at the Janta Darbar,' Bhardwaj said. According to Bhardwaj, concerns escalated after minutes of a Health Department meeting held on April 17 were released on May 7. 'The documents indicate that the BJP-led Delhi government plans to shut down hundreds of Mohalla Clinics and replace them with Ayushman Arogya Mandirs,' he alleged. The minutes reportedly suggest that all clinics located near newly opened Arogya Mandirs will be closed and their staff terminated. Clinics in other areas would be closed once Arogya Mandirs are established there, Bhardwaj added.
He further accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of reneging on pre-election assurances. 'The BJP leadership had promised not to discontinue public welfare schemes implemented by the AAP government. But since assuming power, their first decision was to shut down all 250 Mohalla Clinics operating in rented spaces,' he said.
Bhardwaj claimed that following this initial move, the government declared it would rename the remaining Mohalla Clinics as Arogya Mandirs. 'Now, the government seems determined to shut down the entire network and lay off all associated personnel,' he said, adding that many of the employees have been working for minimal pay since 2017, without any salary increment.

Kolkata: Four men were arrested after eight police personnel, including a woman constable, were injured in a clash between two groups over the opening of a shop in a Kolkata suburb on Wednesday, police said. Stones were pelted, police vehicles were damaged, and a two-wheeler was torched in the middle of the road, officers aware of the development said. The police had to resort to a lathi charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob, following which prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were imposed. Police had to resort to lathi charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob,' a senior officer said. The clash took place close to the Rabindra Nagar police station. The police said that when a team of officers went to the spot to tackle the situation, they were attacked by a mob. 'They came in hundreds and were indiscriminately pelting stones and glass bottles. We were few in number. Many police personnel were injured. A brick hit my head,' a lady police constable said. A large police contingent and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed to bring the situation under control. 'The situation is now under control. Raids are going on to arrest those who attacked police personnel,' an officer said. 'In Ward No. 7 of Maheshtala Municipality (Metiabruz Assembly), an illegal attempt was made to construct shops right in front of a Shiv temple near Rabindranagar Police Station. When local Hindu residents objected and built a small Tulsi Mandir instead, mobs launched violent attacks on Hindu homes and temples,' BJP's IT cell head Amit Malviya wrote on X. Kolkata's mayor Firhad Hakim said, 'Violence won't be tolerated. Police are doing their job. People of all religions live here peacefully. I am not bothered by what the BJP is saying. They incite communal violence. Strict actions will be taken against those who take law in their own hands.' Suvendu Adhikari, BJP legislator and leader of the opposition in the state legislative assembly, said that BJP legislators will protest in the ongoing assembly session on Thursday.

AAP slams demolition in Bhoomiheen camp, DDA defends action
New Delhi: A demolition drive was held at the Bhoomiheen camp in Kalkaji amid a heavy deployment of cops on Wednesday morning. Calling the demolition a "deliberate assault on the marginalised", AAP alleged that BJP govt defied its own chief minister Rekha Gupta's promise of "not a single jhuggi will be touched". Local MLA Atishi alleged that BJP was betraying the poor. "Just three days ago, CM Rekha Gupta claimed that not a single jhuggi would be demolished and no poor person's home would be touched. Yet, under the cover of heavy police presence, the entire Bhoomiheen camp was razed to the ground, displacing thousands of people and leaving them homeless on the streets," she said. Delhi Development Authority said the demolition was against ineligible dwellers encroaching upon five acres of its land. It stated that under the in situ slum rehabilitation project at Kalkaji, after applying the eligibility criteria as per DUSIB's rehabilitation and relocation policy of 2015, approved by the then Delhi govt, some residents were found to be eligible for rehabilitation and some were not. A total of 1,862 eligible households of Bhoomiheen camp were rehabilitated to EWS flats in Kalkaji Extension between Nov 2022 and May 2023, said DDA. The project is located on a land of 3 hectares with a total construction cost of Rs 345 crore, excluding land cost. These flats have been given at a highly subsidised price of Rs 1.1 lakh as beneficiary contribution, it added. The ineligible dwellers were given an opportunity to file an appeal before the Appellate Authority, the land-owning agency said. DDA further claimed that most of the houses demolished on Wednesday were lying vacant. "344 jhuggi structures existed which were mostly vacant. There is no stay against demolition of these jhuggi structures," it said in a statement. BJP did not comment on the development.
