"I saw films by some of such filmmakers. I felt that there were issues due to the lack of orientation in their films. I specifically mentioned these two categories of directors, as they are financed by the government," he further said. Besides empowering them and giving them proper guidance, such filmmakers should also be given orientation on how to utilise public funds, he added. He also criticised singer Pushpavati for interrupting his speech during the conclave and said she had no connection with the cinema. Earlier in the day, Dalit activist Dinu Veyil lodged a complaint with the Museum police and SC/ST Commission against Gopalakrishnan, accusing him of insulting the entire backward community through his statements in the conclave. While Port Minister V N Vasavan extended support to Gopalakrishnan, saying that his words were misinterpreted, Higher Education Minister R Bindhu rejected the veteran's remarks and said the government has the responsibility to ensure justice to those who have been denied all these years. Nagmohan Das submits recommendations on internal reservation for SCs in Karnataka
The over-three-decade struggle for internal reservation among the 101 scheduled castes in Karnataka reached a crucial point on August 4 with the one -man commission headed by retired judge H.N. Nagmohan Das submitting its 1,766-page report with six recommendations. The commission considered social and educational backwardness along with adequate representation in public employment before arriving at a matrix for quota within the 17% reservation for SCs in public education and employment. A delegation from the commission, led by Mr. Das, met Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and handed over the report in the presence of Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Home Minister G. Parameshwar, Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi, IT & BT Minister Priyank Kharge and Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur. According to a source in the government, 'The report will be placed in the next Cabinet meeting and a decision on its future course will be taken. It is likely that the report could be placed before the State Legislature during the ensuing monsoon session commencing on August 11.' Challenges for conduct of survey Though the government asked Mr. Das — in January 2025 — to recommend internal reservation, the retired judge, in his interim report in March 2025, recommended a state-wide survey to collect data scientifically, as mandated by the court, following which the survey had been conducted. The commission, after conducting a house-to house survey across Karnataka between May 5 and July 6, identified 1.07 crore persons from 27.24 lakh families hailing from the SC community. About 93% of the projected SC population of about 1.16 crore in Karnataka has been covered. The survey lagged in BBMP jurisdiction touching about 54% after several extensions. Internal reservation has been a demand from Dalit left groups, which have accused Dalit right groups of cornering the benefits of reservation. Several castes within the broader SC community have also not been beneficiaries of reservation with no representation in public employment nor political representation, and poor or no benefits in educational avenues besides facing social discrimination.
