Bihar Election: Where Will Chirag Paswan Contest From? Posters Drop Big Clue

Chirag Paswan may contest the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections from a general seat, sparking speculation and local mobilisation with posters promoting him as Bihar's "hope".
Political temperatures in Bihar are soaring ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections, and at the centre of the rising heat is a familiar name, Chirag Paswan. The union minister and chief of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) triggered a fresh wave of speculation by signalling his intent to contest the upcoming elections, possibly for the first time from a general seat in the state Assembly. This move, if confirmed, could reshape the contours of Bihar's electoral battlefield.
The speculation gained traction after a social media post by Jamui MP and Paswan's brother-in-law, Arun Bharti, said, 'When the leader is of the whole of Bihar, then why should the scope of the seat be limited?". He further urged that Paswan should contest not from a reserved seat, but from a general one – framing him as the pan-Bihar alternative and a unifying figure beyond caste lines.
'The workers also feel that this time @iChiragPaswan ji should not contest from any reserved seat in the Bihar assembly elections, but from a general seat – Chirag Paswan is now the hope of the whole of Bihar, not just one community," Bharti said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Within hours, the streets of Patna and Sheikhpura were dotted with posters heralding the arrival of what supporters have dubbed the 'future of Bihar". The messaging was overtly ambitious and emotionally charged, 'Chirag is the name of Bihar's hope… only he can stop migration, provide employment, and reform the health system." The posters featured slogans such as '169 Sheikhpura Vidhan Sabha is waiting for you" and 'When the leader belongs to all of Bihar, why limit the seat?", reflecting a clear push from within the party's ranks.
The posters were credited to Imam Ghazali, Sheikhpura district president of LJP (Ram Vilas), hinting at growing local-level mobilisation and enthusiasm for Paswan's entry into the state legislative fray. Though an official declaration is still pending, the groundwork is visibly being laid.
Speculation is not confined to Sheikhpura alone. Other constituencies being whispered in party circles include Danapur, Hajipur, and key general-category seats in Patna. Insiders believe Paswan's potential entry is a calculated move, intended to expand his support base beyond his traditional Dalit constituency and solidify his image as a statewide leader with developmental credentials. His oft-repeated mantra, 'Bihar First, Bihari First," is being touted as the ideological cornerstone of this push.
His political stock has risen considerably after the 2024 elections, where LJP (Ram Vilas) managed to win five Lok Sabha seats, bolstering Paswan's influence within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The party is now eyeing a significantly larger share in the Assembly, reportedly staking claim to 40 seats, many currently held by the Janata Dal (United), a senior NDA ally.
Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal added a layer of legitimacy to the ongoing buzz by publicly supporting Paswan's right to choose his electoral path. 'Everyone has the right to make the best decision for themselves and their party," Jaiswal remarked, describing Paswan as a leader who is 'doing well" and hinting at an emerging consensus within NDA ranks, though the seat-sharing deal remains under negotiation.
Political analysts view Paswan's interest in a general seat not just as symbolic outreach but also as strategic positioning within the NDA. It could give him greater leverage during alliance talks and offer his party an enhanced profile on the state Assembly map.
Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress have reportedly begun reassessing their campaign strategies, with sources admitting that Paswan's rising popularity, especially among young voters and first-time electors, could complicate their arithmetic.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis says police have clarified Pune incident involving Dalit girls

Mumbai: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said the police had given a clear clarification on the Pune incident where three Dalit girls alleged they were subjected to casteist slurs and humiliating treatment by a woman police officer during questioning. The incident sparked outrage, with political leaders and activists accusing Pune police of insensitivity and deliberate inaction. In a clear message to the police, Fadnavis, while speaking to the media in Mumbai, said, "The police should take action as per law. They should not take any action under pressure. Whatever fits in the law, they may take all such action." The BJP criticised NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar for his behaviour with the police. BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said Pawar had tried to intimidate the police even in the Jitendra Awhad case a few weeks ago. Adoor Gopalakrishnan justifies remarks on film funding for women, marginalised

Thiruvananthapuram, Eminent filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Monday justified his remarks on the Kerala government's project to promote filmmakers from marginalised sections and said his statements were intended to empower them and improve their technical knowledge. Adoor Gopalakrishnan justifies remarks on film funding for women, marginalised He said he wanted women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST sections to continue in the film industry, and that's why he wanted them to undergo expert training in movie making and on how to utilise government funding. Speaking to reporters here, the veteran said he was not responsible for the interpretations made by the media about his statements during the government-organised film conclave on Sunday. He stressed that the films, being made with government finance, should have social relevance, aesthetic beauty, and technical excellence. Stating the need for those directing films to have knowledge about movie making, Gopalakrishnan said he wanted the filmmakers from the marginalised sections to be updated periodically and get proper orientation under experts. "The women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST category should be continued in the industry...I said for their good... My intention was their upliftment. I never tried to picture them in a poor light and viewed them as derogatory," he said. The 'Swayamvaram' director sought to know from the media what was objectionable in his remarks at the conclave. "I saw films by some of such filmmakers. I felt that there were issues due to the lack of orientation in their films. I specifically mentioned these two categories of directors, as they are financed by the government," he further said. Besides empowering them and giving them proper guidance, such filmmakers should also be given orientation on how to utilise public funds, he added. He also criticised singer Pushpavati for interrupting his speech during the conclave and said she had no connection with the cinema. When reporters asked about a police complaint lodged against him, Gopalakrishnan said, "Let them complain. They have all the rights to the same." Earlier in the day, Dalit activist Dinu Veyil lodged a complaint with the Museum police and SC/ST Commission against Gopalakrishnan, accusing him of insulting the entire backward community through his statements in the conclave. While Port Minister V N Vasavan extended support to Gopalakrishnan, saying that his words were misinterpreted, Higher Education Minister R Bindhu rejected the veteran's remarks and said the government has the responsibility to ensure justice to those who have been denied all these years. Gopalakrishnan has not criticised the government's stand, Vasavan said, adding that he just suggested exercising caution while disbursing funds in connection with the funding for filmmakers. Bindhu, however, said there is nothing wrong with the government providing funds for women and those belonging to the SC/ST community for expressing their creativity. Stating that filmmaking is an expensive process and there is nothing wrong with providing funds for the same by the government, the minister also said that it is one of the best projects of the cultural affairs department. Gopalakrishnan on Sunday said the current practice of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation providing ₹1.5 crore to prospective filmmakers from marginalised sections has not been producing the desired results. He said the aspiring filmmakers belonging to these sessions should first undergo proper training by experts before such funds are disbursed. Nagmohan Das submits recommendations on internal reservation for SCs in Karnataka

The over-three-decade struggle for internal reservation among the 101 scheduled castes in Karnataka reached a crucial point on August 4 with the one -man commission headed by retired judge H.N. Nagmohan Das submitting its 1,766-page report with six recommendations. The commission considered social and educational backwardness along with adequate representation in public employment before arriving at a matrix for quota within the 17% reservation for SCs in public education and employment. A delegation from the commission, led by Mr. Das, met Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and handed over the report in the presence of Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Home Minister G. Parameshwar, Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi, IT & BT Minister Priyank Kharge and Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur. According to a source in the government, 'The report will be placed in the next Cabinet meeting and a decision on its future course will be taken. It is likely that the report could be placed before the State Legislature during the ensuing monsoon session commencing on August 11.' While the government is yet to discuss the report, the Dalit left (Madigas) group, who have been demanding internal reservation, have become restive threatening protest from August 11 for its implementation. The State Government has stopped recruitment awaiting the recommendations, causing anxiety among job aspirants. The government had tasked the commission to recommend internal reservation slicing up the 17% quota among Dalit right (Holeyas), Dalit left (Madigas), Korma, Korcha, Lambani, Bhovi and over 40 nomadic castes based on the August 1, 2024 ruling of the Supreme Court that cleared the deck for internal reservation upholding its constitutional validity under Article 14. Challenges for conduct of survey Though the government asked Mr. Das — in January 2025 — to recommend internal reservation, the retired judge, in his interim report in March 2025, recommended a state-wide survey to collect data scientifically, as mandated by the court, following which the survey had been conducted. The commission, after conducting a house-to house survey across Karnataka between May 5 and July 6, identified 1.07 crore persons from 27.24 lakh families hailing from the SC community. About 93% of the projected SC population of about 1.16 crore in Karnataka has been covered. The survey lagged in BBMP jurisdiction touching about 54% after several extensions. Internal reservation has been a demand from Dalit left groups, which have accused Dalit right groups of cornering the benefits of reservation. Several castes within the broader SC community have also not been beneficiaries of reservation with no representation in public employment nor political representation, and poor or no benefits in educational avenues besides facing social discrimination.
