Why Anshul Kamboj Should Replace Akash Deep In India's 11 For 3rd Test Vs England
If Rishabh Pant's finger injury wasn't enough, India have been dealt with a couple of more significant blows ahead of their fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Test against England in Manchester. Akash Deep, who took 10 wickets in Birmingham in the second game, is also doubtful for the game due to a recurrent back injury.
What's more, India's premier back-up pace option, Arshdeep Singh, has also picked up a hand injury during nets. That means the team will likely need a new partner for Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj — who is also overworked and deserves some rest — when they are trailing the series 2-1 and desperate for a win.
The options available are Prasidh Krishna, who played the first two Tests but didn't do too well, picking six wickets but often leaking runs, spinner Kuldeep Yadav and the new-joinee Anshul Kamboj. Although Kamboj has only been roped in as a cover at this stage, it's interesting that the team has picked him ahead of Harshit Rana, who played in Australia and was asked to stay back after the 'A' tour.
Kamboj is yet to play for India, but the Manchester Test could be the perfect time to field him in.
Why playing Anshul Kamboj makes sense
Firstly, India will need to replace Akash Deep with a pacer. Kuldeep is an excellent option who should have gotten his chance already, but as the fourth bowler, not in place of one of the seamers. That's because no matter how flat the conditions get in England, pacers still rule, and that's likely to be true for Old Trafford too.
Kamboj should be India's pick ahead of Prasidh for several reasons. First is his form, with the Haryana pacer racking up 55 wickets in his last 11 first-class matches. In Ranji Trophy 2024-25, he picked up 34 wickets in six games at an average of 13.79 and a telling economy rate of 2.80, with the famous 10/49 as his best figures.
But what about English conditions? He took five wickets in three innings for India 'A' against England Lions before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on pitches that were far from conducive for his skills. The 24-year-old also scored a half-century (unbeaten 51) in an innings for good measure, which means his inclusion won't affect the depth of the side, which the current management prioritises.
Then, unlike Prasidh, Kamboj is a control-first bowler. He can make the ball move off the pitch, but he rarely ever does it at the cost of control. He'll stick with the nagging channel outside off and trouble the batter with subtle changes of seam and angles. With a ceiling of a tricky wicket-hogger, Kamboj can also perform the Ishant Sharma role — being the frugal workhorse from one end to allow Siraj and Bumrah to rotate.
India are at a stage in the series where it's almost necessary to take risks with a debutant instead of playing safe with Prasidh who was tried but didn't impress. Kamboj has all the skills to raise the floor of this team, and help others to push the ceiling further with fresher legs and relaxed minds.

Not Sachin Tendulkar! Harry Brook Declares England Batter As 'Best Of All Time'
Last Updated: Harry Brook called Joe Root the 'best Test batter of all time,' even though Brook recently replaced Root as the top Test batter in ICC rankings. Ending all media comparisons in one swipe, Harry Brook declared Joe Root as the 'best Test batter of all time' on Monday (July 21). Brook, who replaced Root as the number one Test batter in the ICC men's rankings recently, said he was still 'not in the same league' as the senior Englishman and would rather he be at the top. Root, over the past couple of years, has made a strong case for himself as the greatest English batter. With more than 2500 runs to his name since 2023, he has gone past Alastair Cook's tally of 12472 Test runs. He's now only 120 runs away from leapfrogging Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the format, which will leave only Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him. 'Everybody wants to be number one, don't they?" Brook said about the rankings and comparisons in a press conference. 'Him probably more than anybody else. He's a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him, so I'll happily let him have it. He's played for 12-13 years or however long he's played. In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time, so I'll let him have that one for now," he added. Brook and Root have been among England's best batters in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy so far, helping the hosts take a 2-1 lead. However, their biggest examination would be the fourth Test on a Manchester surface, which is likely to be of most help for bowlers so far. Meanwhile, England have included bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson in their playing 11 for the injured Shoaib Bashir. Brook seemed pleased with the 35-year-old's return to Test cricket after eight years. 'He's a wily old fox, very experienced. He's a very skillful cricketer as well. He's played everywhere, played against everyone. . . Hopefully he can land it in the foot-holes and create a bit of spice out of there and some opportunities to take wickets. He's obviously a very good batter as well, he's got nearly 20 First-Class hundreds. That's adding to our strength in batting. He's a good bloke, he's willing to always fight for the team. He's very competitive and it's good to have him here," Brook said. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 23:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Bring Kuldeep directly': Harbhajan Singh presses Gambhir-Gill with decisive suggestion ahead of 4th Test against England
Ahead of the start of the 4th Test, Harbhajan Singh has urged Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill to trust in the talents of Kuldeep Yadav, and include the bowler in the playing XI for the 4th Test. read more With the 4th Test about to begin in Manchester, Team India stands at a delicate position in the series at 2-1. As injuries have mounted, it is needless to say that the playing XI will be tweaked for the penultimate Test match against England. One to two modifications are expected in the side that entered the Lord's. However, at this point, it is anybody's guess what changes the team management will make. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As the guessing game is on, experts are busy suggesting the names who should be picked for the 4th Test. The bracket includes former India bowler Harbhajan Singh, who has straight up stated that Kuldeep Yadav should be included in the side. Harbhajan Singh vouches for Kuldeep Yadav As per Singh, Yadav can hoodwink the English batters with his variations and must get picked in the 4th Test. 'I had said before the Lord's Test and also for the Birmingham Test that Kuldeep should play. Because the kind of free-flowing batting these Englishmen do, it is not that easy to him. If such a spinner spins it both sides, then he can become a mystery bowler and take wickets at crucial times,' Singh told India Today. 'In Test cricket, it is not just that they are waiting for the new ball. Let a few overs be bowled. If nothing much is happening, then Kuldeep Yadav can take wickets. If it was my team, I would drop Nitish and bring Kuldeep directly in the team,' he added. Harbhajan Singh had seemingly shared his critique before the unfortunate news of Nitish Kumar Reddy's injury surfaced. Reddy has been ruled out of the ongoing India vs England Test series due to a knee injury and will miss the fourth as well as the fifth Test. Howbeit, whether Kuldeep Yadav will get an opportunity to play remains uncertain, with only time revealing the team's decision. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

England players Joe Root and Harry Brook chat in the field during the Second Test Match between England and India at Edgbaston (Photo by) India and England are set to face off once again in less than two days in the five-match Test series in England. With India trailing 2-1 and on the back of a painful defeat at Lord's, momentum is firmly with Ben Stokes' side. In a rather bold press conference for the hosts, Harry Brook spoke to the media ahead of the 4th Test at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. As the batter went over the moments of the heated 3rd Test and England's chances in the one that was set to follow, he made a strong claim about one of his teammates. Veteran batter and England icon Joe Root took top spot as the highest-ranked Test batter in the recent ICC rankings. Speaking on the same, Brook lauded his teammate and even went on to call him the "best batter of all time." Quizzed on whether there was any rivalry going on between himself and Root in the team, Brook was quick to dismiss it. "Oh, everybody wants to be number one, don't they? Him, probably more than anybody else. But no, he's a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him, so I'll happily let him have it," said Brook with a chuckle, as he spoke to the reporters ahead of the 4th Test. Root also broke several records in the series, with one not being related to the bat as well. With his 211th catch in Test cricket, he now leads the list for catches taken in the format, bettering India legend Rahul Dravid's record of 210. He took a splendid one-handed catch of Karun Nair in the 3rd Test. Root has been in impeccable form for the hosts, racking up crucial runs in the last three Tests. In the previous match at Lord's, the 34-year-old scored a gritty 104 off 199, and managed 40 in the second innings. Poll Who do you think will win the 4th Test match between India and England? India England Draw Brook, however, failed to impress with the bat in both innings at Lord's, where he only managed 11 and 23 respectively. However, the hosts managed to get over the line and reestablish their series lead with a 22-run victory.
