‘The Conjuring: Last Rites' First Looks Set Stage For The Warren's 'Darkest' Case Yet
Set in 1986, five years after the events of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It , The Conjuring: Last Rites finds the Warrens in retirement — at least until one final case lures them back. This time, the haunting isn't just about what's lurking in the shadows, but what's been buried in the past. 'I felt strongly that the biggest, most emotional story we could tell was the most personal story,' irector Michael Chaves told Entertainment Weekly.
Vera Farmiga hinted that The Conjuring: Last Rites introduces a 'moment that makes time stand still.' Her comments suggest the Warrens will face something unlike anything they've encountered before: something deeply tied to their own history. Wilson, meanwhile, described the film as a return to the franchise's core: a story centered on family, faith, and fear. 'The third film was more of a true crime detour,' he said. 'This really felt like a proper ending to get back to the heart of the franchise, the family of it all.'
The Conjuring: Last Rites adapts the infamous Smurl haunting, a real-life case that drew national attention in the late '80s. For producers, the true story's media exposure became an asset. Executive producer Peter Safran pointed out that it's 'one of the more Googleable ones,' giving audiences an eerie head start before stepping into theaters. The Smurls' claims made the rounds on TV shows like Larry King Live , turning their story into one of the most well-documented cases in the Warrens' archive.
Safran confirmed that Last Rites marks the final appearance of Wilson and Farmiga as the Warrens, but not necessarily the end of the franchise. 'It's the end of the story with Patrick and Vera,' he said, leaving the door open for future projects set within the same universe. New Line Cinema president Richard Brenner echoed that sentiment, calling this the end of The Conjuring 's 'phase one' and teasing additional entries including new titles and potential crossovers with other Warner Bros. horror properties like Evil Dead .
Whether or not the Warrens return in some future form, The Conjuring: Last Rites closes a chapter that began with a quiet knock on a farmhouse door in Rhode Island and ends with a case that may reveal just as much about the Warrens as it does the spirits they chase. Fans will soon find out what haunts a ghost hunter when the ghosts are personal.
The Conjuring: Last Rites opens in cinemas on 5 September.

James Gunn Pens Next "Super Family" Movie, As 'The Batman 2' Sets Spring 2026 Shoot
The future of DC films is slowly coming together, starting with The Batman Part II . The sequel to 2022's The Batman , which is separate from James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DC Universe (DCU) — formerly known as the DC Extended Universe — is set to begin shooting in Spring 2026 with a theatrical release planned for 1 October 2027. Director Matt Reeves completed the script in June, following a one-year delay from the very initial 2025 opening. While details remain under lock and key, Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz will reprise their respective roles as the Caped Crusader and Catwoman in the forthcoming instalment, alongside Colin Farrell as The Penguin. 'To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,' Gunn wrote on Threads last year on the scheduling pushback. '7 years between Alien and Aliens . 14 years between Incredibles . 7 years between the first two Terminators . 13 years between Avatars . 36 years between Top Guns . And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3 .' The news comes from a letter to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders, which also confirmed that the DC Studios co-head is writing the next entry in the Super family, Supergirl , plus Clayface and the next Wonder Woman . In terms of television projects, the 10-year vision for the DCU includes The Penguin , the upcoming new season of Peacemaker , and Lanterns , starring Kyle Chandler ( Friday Night Lights ) and Aaron Pierre ( Musfasa: The Lion King ) as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as well as Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner. Under Gunn's rule, no project will move into the pre-production and production processes until the screenplay is finished, as opposed to Marvel Studios' approach, where it enters production in the scripting phase. Next on the list is Supergirl , based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series. Led by House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock, the Craig Gillespie-directed comic book adventure will introduce the titular superheroine as 'a total mess'. 'She's a total mess. I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background,' Gunn explained. 'He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that.' The second DCU cinematic instalment is set to hit theatres on 26 June 2026, building on 2025's Superman , which is the first DC film to surpass US$300 million domestically in three years. The previous milestone was achieved by, coincidentally, The Batman , due for a sequel on 1 October 2027. ‘Superman' Soars Past 'Man of Steel' US Box Office, Is First DC Film To Hit US$300 Million Domestically In Years
In another major victory for DC Studios, James Gunn's Superman has reached new heights of success after surpassing US$500 million at the global box office. The latest comic book adventure is now the first DC film to cross the domestic tally of US$300 million in three years, with The Batman grossing US$369.2 million at the end of its run. Notably, the milestone puts it ahead of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel , which accumulated US$291 million in 2013, not adjusted for inflation. It should be noted that the overtaking only applies to the domestic market, as the latter stands at US$670.1 million worldwide. The Henry Cavill-starring pic was also the last solo outing for the Last Son of Krypton, who returned to the big screen in the 2016 sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . If all goes well, Superman will soon overtake its domestic haul of US$330.4 million as well. Now in its fourth weekend, Junn's film joins Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie , Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch , and Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth in the US$300 million club, becoming only the fourth title of 2025 to do so. The road ahead may not be as smooth-sailing, however, as it continues to face competition from F1: The Movie , which has veered past US$500 million globally, and of course, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps . By all accounts, both superhero tentpoles are a hit among audiences and critics alike, each scoring an A on CinemaScore. On Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel's latest is currently in the lead with 86 per cent and 91 per cent from critics and audiences, respectively, versus 83 per cent and 91 per cent for Superman . Comic book enthusiasts are the real winners, either way. Superman has certainly borne fruit for DC Studios, living up to sky-high expectations as the launchpad to Chapter One of the rebooted cinematic universe. In it, David Corenswet ( Pearl ) takes on the role of the titular character, with Rachel Brosnahan ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ) portraying The Daily Planet journalist and Superman's love interest, Lois Lane. Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is directed by WandaVision 's Matt Shakman and serves as the 37th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It stars Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ) as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby ( The Crown ) as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach ( The Bear ) as Ben Grimm / The Thing, and Joseph Quinn ( Stranger Things 4 ) as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, eschewing their origin stories for a new adventure in the retro-futuristic setting of an alternate universe known as Earth-828. Warner Bros. Working On Another Live-Service Game Despite Suicide Squad Flop
Despite losing US$200 million after last year's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League , Warner Bros. Games has apparently not learnt its lesson and is hard at work on another new live-service title based in the DC Comics universe. This comes from a job listing for an executive producer role at WB Games Montréal, with the job scope including overseeing 'all phases of development, from concept to post-launch live operations', and the experience required including a 'deep understanding of the full game development lifecycle, including live services'. While the exact game title was not specified, the post did mention that it will be a 'high-quality AAA game based on one of the iconic IPs from the vast Warner Bros. and DC Comics catalogue.' It seems that despite its recent string of flops, from the aforementioned Suicide Squad , to the recently shut-down MultiVersus and 2022's disappointing Gotham Knights , WB Games has decided that the best course of action to regain the favour lost within its playbase is to double down on the very thing they hate, the dreaded live-service format. This also comes after a studio-wide shake-up late last year, where Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav discussed plans to only focus on four of its major gaming IPs: DC, Hogwarts Legacy , Mortal Kombat , and Game of Thrones , which makes this new live-service game likely to fall under the DC umbrella. This decision to once again stick to the live-service format becomes even more baffling when considering how tough of a time WB Games has it as of late, with Suicide Squad's flop leading to a 41 per cent drop in its gaming revenue last year and a four percent decrease across the studio's entire revenue, which comprises of gaming, TV and cinema. The studio has also seen layoffs and closures in the months that followed, including a team 'restructuring' at Rocksteady in September 2024, and the cancellation of its Wonder Woman game alongside the closure of three studios, Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego in February this year. Will WB Games' insistence on the live-service format somehow work in its favour, or is the studio committing career suicide? Only time will tell, but if history has taught us anything about the genre, it's likely the latter.
