Johor police raise RM30,000 for families of fallen FRU personnel
Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the funds were collected through a spontaneous donation drive launched among personnel within the Johor police contingent.
He said the contribution would be handed over to the leadership at Bukit Aman next week, before being distributed to the victims' families.
"Upon receiving news of the fatal road accident involving our FRU colleagues, we immediately initiated a donation drive to offer some assistance.
"We hope this small contribution will help ease the burden on their families during this difficult time," he said at the Blood Donation Programme held in conjunction with the 218th Police Day celebration at the Johor police headquarters today.
On May 13, nine members of FRU Unit 5 based in Sungai Senam, Ipoh, Perak, were killed when the truck they were travelling in collided with a lorry upon returning from duty at the Chitrapournami festival in Hilir Perak.
At today's event, some 250 officers and personnel from the Johor contingent are expected to donate blood as part of the annual blood donation drive.
Kumar said that 110 pints were successfully collected during last year's campaign and expressed hope that this year's collection would surpass that figure.

Man fined RM30,000, loses custody of Lucky for animal cruelty
KUALA LUMPUR: An air-conditioning maintenance worker has been fined RM30,000 and lost custody of his one-year-old German Shepherd puppy, Lucky, by the Ampang Sessions Court today for animal cruelty. Kiew Mun Kiat, 43, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty before Judge Norshila Kamarudin to charges of repeatedly beating Lucky with a cane and a rubber pipe. In addition to the fine, Norshila granted the prosecution's application for Lucky to be forfeited to the government to enable it to be adopted by interested and eligible members of the public. Kiew faces six months in jail if he fails to pay the fine. The offence took place at 5.29pm at a house in Pandan Indah on July 31. He was charged under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act, which provides for a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000, or a jail term of up to three years, or both, upon conviction. In mitigation, Kiew, who represented himself, pleaded for leniency. "It bit my hand and I wanted to teach it a lesson. I ask for a light sentence," he said. However, Selangor Veterinary Services Department prosecuting officer Mohd Sharif Sabran urged the court to impose a stern sentence. "The court must take into account the severity of this animal cruelty offence. "The puppy was repeatedly and cruelly beaten, resulting in trauma," he said. According to the facts of the case, Kiew's actions were recorded by his neighbours on a mobile phone before the footage was uploaded to social media and went viral. Acting on a tip-off and public complaint, a team of animal welfare officers and policemen from the Ampang district headquarters conducted checks at Kiew's home. They found Lucky tied up in the compound, along with the cane and rubber pipe used in the abuse. A veterinary examination on Aug 1 revealed injuries to Lucky's left leg, an area of hair loss, and skin redness.
