Kolkata: Two brothers belonging to the Matua community from Nadia are reportedly languishing in a Maharashtra prison for the last six months despite prod- ucing multiple Indian IDs and even identity cards issued by the All India Matua Mahasangha (AIMM), bearing the signature of junior Union minister and Bongaon BJP MP
Shantanu Thakur
.
On Friday, the grieving parents of Manishankar Biswas and his younger sibling Nayan sought their immediate release, accusing Maharashtra Police of wrongfully detaining them on suspicion of being Bangladeshi immigrants. The accusations also triggered political outrage, coming just days after the arrest of six members from the community (including three children) in Pune on similar charges.
Speaking from his home in Ranaghat's Rainagar, Nishikanta Biswas, a devout Matua follower, said the family was running from pillar to post to secure the release of his sons.
He claimed that Manishankar and Nayan — both in their early 30s — furnished Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards and even AIMM identity cards as proof of Indian citizenship. However, Maharashtra Police allegedly dismissed these documents as "inadequate".

Since their arrest, my paralysed wife has not been able to get medical treatment," Nishikanta said, breaking down in tears. His wife reportedly suffered a brain stroke after hearing of her sons' detention, he said.
"We voted for BJP, we trusted them," said Nishikanta, "but now we feel abandoned".
The family said they reached out to several netas for help. "The police are treating them as illegal Rohingya immigrants despite having Indian documents.
This is nothing short of harassment," said Sashikanta, Nishikanta's brother.
Trinamool's Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Bala Thakur and MP Samirul Islam condemned the arrests, alleging members of the Matua community were facing systematic targeting in BJP-governed states like Maharashtra.
"They are Indian citizens. They hold Aadhaar, voter cards and Matua Mahasangha IDs signed by Shantanu Thakur himself. Yet, they have been labelled as Bangladeshis.
This is shameful," said Islam. "Matuas are being harassed in BJP-governed Maharashtra. It reflects the govt's deep-seated apathy and bias towards Bengali-speaking Hindus," Mamata Bala said.
While Shantanu did not respond to calls, his brother Subrata Thakur, the BJP MLA from Gaighata, said the matter was resolved. "This is part of a legal process. When someone is suspected of being an infiltrator, the authorities concerned are bound to verify their documents.
Once that is complete, they are released. TMC is unnecessarily politicising the issue," he said.
Subrata said that large numbers of illegal immigrants, including Rohingya and Bangladeshis, had entered India, and police were conducting legal crackdowns in many states.
Citizenship has been a restive issue among Matuas, prompting AIMM to issue the ID cards.

AAP govt suppressed case files of Dera Sacha Sauda chief: Pargat Singh

Congress MLA Pargat Singh Tuesday raised serious concerns over the Punjab government's intent and the prolonged delay in delivering justice in the 2015 sacrilege cases. Addressing a press conference here Tuesday, he said that after the AAP came to power, case files pertaining to Dera Sacha Sauda chief were suppressed. 'For over two and a half years, prosecution sanction was not granted against Dera chief Ram Rahim. Repeated questions were raised in the Vidhan Sabha, but the government remained silent,' he said. Pargat said not a single AAP MLA of 95 ever raised their voice on the matter. He added that cases against Dera followers were transferred outside Punjab under a conspiracy involving AAP, and even senior advocate HS Phoolka publicly exposed this plot. He said that after the AAP government assumed office in May 2022, the file seeking prosecution sanction against Ram Rahim was submitted to CM Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the Home portfolio. 'I met him in December 2022 regarding the matter. I also raised the issue thrice in the Assembly, yet nothing was done,' he said. Pargat Singh also clarified Congress' position and asserted that the party took serious action when in power. 'The Congress government had constituted the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission and launched an investigation. Rahul Gandhi visited Punjab and assured the people that justice would be served. When there was a slowdown in action, the Congress replaced its Chief Minister and accelerated the SIT probe,' he said. He added that when former CM Captain Amarinder Singh compromised with the Badal family and allowed the investigation to be derailed, a group of justice-seeking Congress MLAs approached the party high command and ensured the leadership was changed. He also criticised the SAD, stating, 'Sukhbir Badal has not named the Dera chief even once because his only concern is saving his Bathinda seat—not securing justice for the sacrilege of Guru Sahib.' He added that in the 2015 sacrilege cases, there was an attempt to falsely implicate Sikh youth. Holding the BJP directly responsible, Pargat added, 'The BJP must clarify its stand. It has always worked against Punjab's interests. Sukhbir avoided calling the Dera chief guilty because of BJP's influence.' He asked why AAP leaders Aman Arora, Harpal Cheema, and Kultar Singh Sandhwan are silent today. 'These are the same people who once demanded justice within three months,' he said.

Centre to table Sports Bill today; BCCI to come under govt purview

The government is set to introduce the much-anticipated National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The bill aims to establish a legal framework that promotes accountability, transparency, and fairness in the operation of National Sports Federations (NSFs). It also aims to protect the interests of athletes by setting up robust grievance redressal and safe sport mechanisms. Ensuring better governance and dispute resolution The primary objectives of the bill include enhancing the welfare of sportspersons, enforcing ethical standards, and laying down clear governance norms for NSFs. It proposes administrative reforms and a system to resolve disputes through institutional processes rather than ad hoc interventions. A key feature of the legislation is the inclusion of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) under its jurisdiction. Once the bill is enacted, the BCCI will need to apply for annual recognition just like any other NSF. Additionally, all ongoing and future disputes involving the cricket board will be handled by the soon-to-be-established National Sports Tribunal. After completing its elections in September, the BCCI will have to seek approval from the proposed National Sports Board to continue operating. Even though the cricket body doesn't receive government funding, it will still have to comply with the norms set under the law. Central tribunal to handle all federation disputes The BCCI, like other federations, will be bound by the eligibility requirements outlined in the Act. Despite its autonomy, the board will no longer be able to approach regular courts for litigation. Instead, all disputes — from team selection issues to code of conduct violations — will be handled by a central tribunal, which is expected to improve transparency and streamline governance in Indian sports. Separating facts from misconceptions The bill has also been designed to clear up misconceptions about excessive government control. A ministry representative clarified that while the government will not interfere in the day-to-day functioning of federations, the law will enforce minimum governance standards to ensure accountability. Age and tenure rules with built-in flexibility Recognising existing leadership structures, the bill allows some flexibility in terms of age and tenure. For instance, any office-bearer who is elected before turning 70 can complete their full term, even if they cross the age threshold during that period. However, the bill introduces a mandatory cooling-off period between two consecutive terms for key positions such as president, secretary, and treasurer. Each term cannot exceed four years, with a maximum of three terms allowed. The legislation targets ten major problems that have plagued Indian sports governance: Frequent internal conflicts Absence of a unified code of ethics No independent dispute resolution mechanism Inadequate protection for athletes Gender imbalance in leadership roles Poor representation within federations Limited accountability of office-bearers No fixed age or term limits Under-representation of women No legal framework for sportswomen to complete registration processes To align Indian standards with global practices, the bill draws on provisions from the IOC, FIFA, and other international federations. In cricket, the Justice Lodha Committee's recommendations — including the 70-year age cap for BCCI office-bearers — have been adopted. As a result, current BCCI president Roger Binny, who recently turned 70, will no longer be eligible to seek another term. In addition to the sports governance bill, the government will also introduce the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The goal is to update the 2022 legislation to meet the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standards and ensure the independence of both the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) and the Appeals Panel (ADAP).
