Wetherholt leads Springfield past Travs 10-3
SPRINGFIELD, Mo–The Springfield Cardinals continued their Texas League North series with Arkansas Wednesday night.
The Travs are the Double AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
Both the Cardinals and Travelers are tied for first in the north.
And southpaw Ixan Henderson was on the hill, looking to go 2-0 on the season.
He ends the first by striking out Bill Knight swinging.
Henderson pitched five innings, gave up one run and struck out seven.
Then in the third he gets defensive help from J.J. Wetherholt who charges the softly hit ball, and throws to first for the out.
Scoreless in the bottom of the third, a man on for Wetherholt, and the Cardinals top prospect takes this deep to left center, his first Double AA homer, and it's 2-0 Springfield.
One batter later, R.J. Yeager takes this deep to left, it's gone, a solo shot it's 3-0 Cardinals.
The next batter is Dakota Harris, and he goes deep to left, that's back to back jacks, that makes it 4-0.
J.J. Wetherholt was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI in the Cardinals 10-3 victory.

But would acquiring Ramsey make sense when the Cardinals are bullish on their young group of cornerbacks? Sean Murphy-Bunting's season-ending offseason knee injury was almost a blessing in disguise because now it allows 2024 second-round Max Melton and current second-round pick Will Johnson to play. Is Ramsey currently better than either of them? Surely, but what will Miami want in return? Acquiring Ramsey is more for a team who needs a final piece to make them more of a playoff contender. The Cardinals will compete to make the postseason, which means Ramsey might help, but will he fit long-term? The Cardinals are looking for something now and in the future. The Cardinals won't deal for Ramsey, but he would make the secondary really fun to watch. Squandered opportunities early cost Hurricanes in Game 1 of Louisville Super Regional
The Miami Hurricanes dropped game one of the NCAA Louisville Super Regional, falling 8-1 Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville. A five-run third inning propelled the Cardinals while the Hurricanes struggled to convert early opportunities – stranding eight runners over the first four innings. Miami starter AJ Ciscar (6-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on seven hits over 2 1/3 innings. Louisville right-hander Patrick Forbes (4-2) earned the win, striking out nine while surrendering just one earned run on four hits across 5.2 innings. In the top of the second inning, the Hurricanes missed a prime scoring opportunity with the bases loaded and one out after two walks and a hit batter from Louisville starter Patrick Forbes. But Forbes bounced back with a pair of strikeouts to escape the jam unscathed. With momentum shifting to the Cardinals, Louisville responded in the bottom half with back-to-back home runs from Garret Pike and Jake Munroe, giving the Super Regional host a 2-0 lead. In the following inning, Daniel Cuvet was hit by a pitch, Dorian Gonzalez Jr. doubled to right, and Derek Williams worked a walk to load the bases for the second consecutive frame. Senior Renzo Gonzalez followed with a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Cuvet and trimming Miami's deficit to 2-1. Louisville broke the game open in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a series of miscues and timely hitting. After a leadoff groundout, Gavin Klein doubled down the left field line and Will Rose was intentionally walked. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, setting the stage for Louisville's offensive attack. Pike reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error, which allowed two runs to score. Munroe followed with a three-run homer to left, extending the Cardinals' lead. The inning continued with back-to-back singles from Tague Davis and Kamau Neighbors, prompting a pitching change as AJ Ciscar was relieved by Josh Dorn, who finished the inning. Miami's bullpen limited the damage, allowing just one additional run on a sacrifice fly from Munroe in the fourth. Tennessee baseball announces starting pitcher vs Arkansas in Fayetteville Super Regional Marcus Phillips is starting for Tennessee baseball in its opener against Arkansas in the Fayetteville Super Regional . Phillips (4-4, 3.71 ERA) will have a full week's rest entering the start for the Vols (46-17) against the Razorbacks (46-13) on June 6 (5 p.m. ET ESPN) in Game 1 of the super regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He made his most recent start on May 31 against Cincinnati. Phillips threw 98 pitches against Cincinnati, striking out eight and allowed three runs in 6⅔ innings. Phillips started Tennessee's opener during its regular-season series at Arkansas, which was UT's first win at Baum-Walker Stadium under coach Tony Vitello. He allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in 4⅓ innings. He struck out three in the 10-7 win on May 15. Liam Doyle likely is lined up to start Game 2 against the Razorbacks on June 8 (3 p.m. ET, ESPN). Doyle (10-3, 2.84 ERA) has been Tennessee's Game 1 starter in all but two instances this season, but he pitched twice in the Knoxville Regional including in the June 2 final against Wake Forest. The SEC pitcher of the year threw 135 pitches between his 104-pitch start against Miami (Ohio) in the May 30 regional opener and his 31-pitch save against Wake Forest to seal UT's fifth straight regional title. Doyle had his rockiest start of the season at Arkansas on May 16. He allowed eight runs with six earned runs on 11 hits and two walks in 4⅔ innings. He struck out 10. The Vols will have a fully loaded bullpen ready to go behind Phillips in the first game and again behind Doyle in the second game. UT used Dylan Loy (4-0, 3.98 ERA) as an opener against Wake Forest on June 1 in the third game of the Knoxville Regional. Russell, Arvidson and Loy all likely will be key bullpen pitchers in the first two games in the super regional. Russell has pitched in games Phillips has started the past two weekends.
