Pundit credits Notre Dame success to former Cincinnati assistants
Is Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell's success due to a bunch of former Bearcat assistants who now work in South Bend for Notre Dame?
One pundit thinks so.
The College Football Watcher account on X, formerly known as Twitter, suggests that Fickell has had success because Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman was once the defensive coordinator there. He then lists Gino Guidugli, the current Fighting Irish quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, who was the QB coach in Cincy; wide receivers coach Mike Brown, who had that same title with the Bearcats; defensive backs coach Mike Mickens, who was the DB coach in Cincinnati and has that title plus defensive pass-game coordinator with Notre Dame; and former Fighting Irish special teams coordinator Brian Mason. Mason was the special teams coordinator at Cincinnati and is now doing the same job with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.
Whether or not Fickell can have success without these assistants working for him, it's clear that just about any successful head coach will develop successful assistants. At the very least, when teams win, assistants get plucked for other jobs. So it's maybe a coincidence that all these assistants worked for Notre Dame, but it's probably not a coincidence that they are good at their jobs.

Dolphins sign former Texas A&M star to bolster OL after Austin Jackson injury
NFL roster moves continue as former Texas A&M offensive lineman Germain Ifedi signs with the Miami Dolphins for his ninth season and fifth team. Ifedi, a first-round pick by the Seahawks in 2016, has since played for the Bears, Falcons, Lions, and Browns. Known for his versatility along the offensive line, he's logged over 80 career starts and provides dependable depth in both guard and tackle positions. His durability and veteran experience make him a valuable midseason addition, especially for teams seeking protection stability and injury insurance. Jimmy Horn Jr. turning heads at Panthers training camp with his speed and toughness
Colorado football currently has four receivers on NFL training camp rosters who were on the team last season. Other than the Jaguars' Travis Hunter, the standout has been Carolina Panthers rookie Jimmy Horn Jr. Horn was a sixth-round pick by the Panthers in the 2025 NFL draft, but after a fantastic offseason, he is looking like a steal of the draft. With his speed and toughness, Horn is everything a team would want out of a sixth-round receiver. In a recent mock scrimmage at Bank of America Stadium, Horn impressed once again, scoring the first touchdown for the second team offense. Horn was in motion before the snap and then snuck underneath, and quarterback Andy Dalton found him for an easy walk into the endzone. While it was not a typical go-ball that the speedy Horn should see plenty of this season, it was a play that Colorado ran a ton with Horn. Get him the ball in space and let his open-field ability do the rest. Panthers head coach Dave Canales has loved what he has seen from the rookie receiver so far. "I think it's the energy he plays with," said Canales to "He doesn't quit on routes, he continues after the normal part of the protection he can count on, he continues to find space and play fast, and, it's a credit to his fitness, but it's also a credit to just the energy that he puts out there, that you want to throw to him." While sixth-round picks are far from guaranteed to make the final 53-man roster, Horn's performances through the offseason have made it almost a forgone conclusion that he makes Carolina's final group. The Panthers and Shedeur Sanders, Cleveland Browns, will have joint practices this week before each team's first preseason game on Friday, Aug. 8. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. Sonny Dykes talks about opener against UNC, Bill Belichick
See what Sonny Dykes had to say about UNC's opener against UNC We are under a month away from kickoff for the college football season, and for the North Carolina Tar Heels, they are ushering in a new era under Bill Belichick. The Tar Heels will play host to TCU on Labor Day in primetime as they are the standalone game for ESPN. It will be a huge game for both programs as Chapel Hill should be electric for the game. But as we continue to countdown the days, TCU head coach Sonny Dykes had a comment on the opener. Dykes spoke at the Texas High School Coaches Convention recently, calling the opener against UNC 'interesting'. "We have an interesting opener against North Carolina on Labor Day," Dykes said. "That will be a big challenge for us getting ready for a tough road game against an opponent that's obviously got a pretty impressive resume when it comes to coaching in Bill Belichick. "There's going to be a whole lot of things we're not going to have the opportunity to prepare for and a lot of unknowns. We've got to make sure we do a good job making sure our players are ready to go play." Dykes wasn't taking a shot at UNC or Belichick at all. Instead, he was praising the head coach in his first year at the college level. It's going to be a tough challenge for the Tar Heels as TCU is no slouch. But getting off to a good start will be key as well for Belichick and his team.
