'Don't know if I'm allowed to say this': Channel 10's Grant Denyer drops bizarre behind-the-scenes bombshell about Deal or No Deal

Sky News AU30-06-2025
Seasoned presenter Grant Denyer has revealed a bizarre behind-the-scenes detail about Channel 10's Deal or No Deal- something he claims has never happened on any other game show he's hosted.
Speaking to news.com.au podcast host Andrew Bucklow on Monday, Denyer, 47, admitted that for reasons still unclear, a surprising number of people faint while filming the hit program.
"I've never said this and I don't even know if I'm allowed to, but we have quite a few fainters!" Denyer said.
"So, up on the podium where people are holding the cases, it's quite regular that someone goes down."
Denyer, who has hosted the rebooted version of the game show since 2024 after its decade-long hiatus, said the phenomenon remains a mystery, but suspects it's related to nerves and pressure.
"There's an incredible medical team, and people constantly keep an eye out for early warning signs," he explained.
"I don't know whether it's the pressure of the moment, or the heat of the lights, a lot of people get extremely nervous.
"It reminded me, you know how people say 'public speaking is everyone's worst fear'?
"Well, I think as they're waiting for their turn to be selected, their central nervous system is all enraged, they're sweating, and yeah, we have a lot of fainters."
The father of three, who has hosted Family Feud, Million Dollar Minute, Australia's Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars, and Game of Games, mentioned he "didn't expect" the number of fainting incidents on Deal or No Deal.
"I've never had it on any other television show," he admitted.
"I don't specifically know why it happens on Deal or No Deal more than anything else- it's like a thing."
When asked what happens after someone faints, Denyer said the team "quickly extracts" the person and provides "urgent medical attention", before typically picking a replacement from the audience "who looks close enough".
The Gold Logie winner also recalled a time when the production team ended up saving someone's life.
"So, a gentleman went down and we thought he was just a fainter," Denyer recalled.
"We gave him all the appropriate care, then realised, 'Hang on a second, his heart's a little bit arrhythmic here, there's a little bit more going on'."
An ambulance was called, and the man was rushed to hospital.
Denyer said the outcome could have been tragic had the medical incident not occurred during filming.
"He lives by himself in a remote regional community. He would never have made it to hospital himself. So we still get letters from him every month, just saying 'Thank you so much, we wouldn't be alive without you'," Denyer shared.
Bucklow quipped: "So not only are you giving people the chance to win money, you're saving their lives."
"Mate, some people are changing lives- we're saving them," Denyer replied.
He then took a cheeky swipe at comedian Tom Gleeson, host of ABC's Hard Quiz and 10's Taskmaster Australia.
"Sucked in Tom Gleeson, you're not doing that. What are you contributing to humanity?" Denyer joked.
Interestingly, Gleeson was a regular on Channel 10's The Project, which aired its final episode on Friday amid a sweeping programming shake-up.
From this week, Channel 10's evening line-up features 10 News First at 5pm, followed by a new current affairs program 10 News+ hosted by Denham Hitchcock and Amelia Brace from 6pm Sunday to Thursday.
Deal or No Deal now airs at 7pm, going head-to-head with ABC News, Nine's A Current Affair, and Seven's Home and Away, which is in its 37th year.
To promote the show's new slot, Denyer took to social media on Monday with a tongue-in-cheek warning.
"Now if you watch another show at 7pm, that show's dead to you now," he joked.
He also teased that Channel 10's "news queen" Sandra Sully would appear in the first episode: "Oh my god, it's a doozey!"

Scott Cam unleashes on Block contestant: ‘Readjust your attitude'

Don't miss out on the headlines from Reality. Followed categories will be added to My News. There were tense scenes on Wednesday's episode of The Block when host Scott Cam confronted one contestant, advising her to 'readjust (her) attitude' to the show's cast and crew. An episode earlier, WA contestant Han had clashed with The Block foreman Dan, after she went ahead with an unapproved change to her floor plan that he wasn't happy about. It wasn't the first time Dan had accused her of charging ahead with works without his approval, but this time Han wasn't having it – she accused him of manufacturing problems 'for the camera' and angrily insisted the entire thing was a stitch-up. A day on, and in his weekly walkarounds with Shelley Craft, Scott Cam visited Han and her partner Can (Dan, Han, Can and Cam – yes, this is a deeply confusing season for Block drama), and let her know he wasn't going to accept those accusations. 'Now, I've got a few things I need to say. Han, I hear some people saying that you're accusing us of a stitch-up and doing things just for camera. I've told you many, many times: We never set you up to fail. We never stitch you up. We help you along the way, and we've always helped you along the way,' he told her. Scott Cam was firm: Fix your attitude. Addressing her unapproved changes – this time, moving the floorplan – Cam told her: 'You're making decisions that are affecting you – you're making those decisions, not us. You're not a builder, so don't make decisions that are going to affect your build. And don't accuse us of trying to stitch you up and doing stuff just for camera, because we don't do that.' He finished his dressing down with a firm request of Han. 'So, now I'm going to ask you really nicely to readjust your attitude on this show. To the crew, to Dan, to me and to everyone around you … OK?' Han's response to the dressing down: 'Heard.' Han's two-word reply? 'Yeah. Heard.' She had more to say to the cameras when Cam had gone, though, saying the whole episode had been 'unfair' on her: 'I actually don't think I need an attitude readjustment. It's not an attitude problem.' There was a happy ending for this particular Block clash, though: Later in the episode, Han grabbed Cam for a one-on-one chat, apologising and insisting she never intentionally set out to break any of the show's rules. Cam accepted the apology and the pair agreed to move forward. Originally published as Scott Cam unleashes on Block contestant: 'Readjust your attitude'

'Juvenile and awful': ABC presenter Nate Byrne who suffered on-air panic attack reveals cruel letter from 'disappointed' viewer

ABC presenter Nate Byrne has revealed the contents of cruel fan mail he received after unveiling his new haircut on-air this month. Byrne, who presents the morning weather for the public broadcaster, revealed he received a letter from a fan who described his hairstyle as 'juvenile and awful'. He sported a fresh edgy look with a fade on the sides of his head with gel through the top. Taking to Instagram, Byrne shared a photo of a note he received on August 13 from the unnamed viewer with the subheading simply reading, 'Haircut'. 'Good morning Nate,' it began. 'Whilst I respect your right to have your hair styled as you wish, I am exercising my right to tell you it looks juvenile and awful. 'I'll return to ABC Breakfast once it grows out. 'Yours sincerely – signed - name redacted - (Disappointed viewer).' Byrne took the criticism in good humour asking his followers if anyone has suggestions for his next haircut. 'Mail's in! Proof that the art of letter-writing isn't dead! Anyone have any suggestions for my next do?' he said. The post attracted messages of support from fellow TV stars. Fellow colleague, ABC Breakfast TV presenter James Glenday said: 'Never change Nate! We can have some fun with this. And anyway, it's better to be looked over than overlooked?' MasterChef judge Poh Ling Yeow wrote, 'Can u please make it extra 'juvenile'? Nate I used to get hate mail about my 'fake' laugh. ABC viewers.' Dancing With The Stars judge Todd McKenney added, 'This has made my day. I thought I was the only one to get this sort of feedback! You always rock your look. Don't touch one strand!' Meanwhile, fans rallied around Byrne and defended his new hairstyle. 'Dear Disappointed Viewer, your opinion is important, just not to anyone here. Yours sincerely, 68-year-old bald guy,' commented one fan. 'Omg how ridiculous. Nate you are AMAZING, a beautiful human, who is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, clearly love your job, your passion lights up the screen. We LOVE YOU. Do not change, you are a very rare treasure. Xxxx' another said. 'I actually said to my dad the other morning I noticed you'd had a haircut. I said to him if I was a gay man you'd be my type. Nate, you're hot,' a third added. Byrne who has been presenting ABC's morning program since 2017 previously was applauded by viewers for how he handled an on-air panic attack in August last year. The panic attack came as he was reading Queensland's weather forecast. 'I'm actually going to need to stop for a second,' he said suddenly, before mentioning the condition which affects him. 'Some of you may know that I occasionally get affected by some panic attacks, and actually that's happening right now." He then asked to hand the broadcast back to co-presenters Lisa Millar and Michael Rowland. Millar agreed and took the opportunity to bring up a piece Byrne wrote in 2022 about suffering panic attacks on-air. 'Nate wrote a great piece on the ABC online website about this and I reckon we might re-up it, put it on our socials, you can have a bit of a read,' she said. 'The response when he first wrote about it and spoke about it was that everyone said, 'Oh thank god, Nate's not perfect, we thought he was perfect, but actually he's now sharing something'.'
