Barabanki temple stampede: SDM removed, new official takes charge
Rajesh Vishwakarma has been appointed as the new Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Haidergarh and took charge at the temple on Thursday.
District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi ordered the transfer of Tabrez following public dissatisfaction over poor arrangements during the first two Mondays of Sawan at the popular Shiva temple. He has now been posted as the special land acquisition officer at the collectorate.
Although local volunteers and temple committee members did not raise complaints publicly, murmurs persisted that Tabrez had not been present on either of the critical Mondays. Other key administrative officials, including the tehsildar and naib tehsildar, were also allegedly absent.
On Thursday evening, Vishwakarma visited the Avsaneshwar Temple, offered prayers, and inspected the temple premises and the adjoining fairground. He issued strict instructions ensuring no lapses in devotees' safety.
At the Gomti River ghat, where pilgrims bathe before offering holy water (jalabhishek) to the deity, Vishwakarma found the water level had risen, however, there were no safety arrangements in place. He immediately ordered the barricading of the ghat and issued stern directions to the revenue and police teams on site.
During a joint inspection with temple committee chairman Sanjay Giri, manager Vinod Giri, and priest Atul Goswami, Vishwakarma reviewed all arrangements and instructed corrective action wherever shortcomings were observed.
He also directed adequate police force be deployed across all critical points in and around the temple premises for the upcoming Monday. Additionally, the presence of two ambulances has been made mandatory.
Two people were killed and 32 injured in a stampede at the temple after a live electric wire, broken by monkeys, fell onto a tin shed early on Monday, officials said. The electric current spread through the tin shed as the wire fell, triggering panic and a stampede in the temple premises.
Earlier, DGP Uttar Pradesh Rajeev Krishna, at a program in Lucknow, maintained that the deaths were caused by electrocution and not because of the stampede. PTI COR KIS MPL MPL

"Every aspect is being looked into for determining the probable cause(s)/contributory factor(s) leading to the accident," said Mohol, responding to a query on whether the government will investigate the crash from a sabotage angle. Chandigarh, Punjab Police chief on Tuesday chaired a state-level meeting with officers to review the ongoing anti-drug campaign, the overall law and order situation, and the internal security landscape across the state. During the meeting, senior officers briefed the field officers on critical issues such as cross-border drug trafficking, Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, organised crime networks, and key law and order concerns. "We also reviewed the progress of the state-wide anti-drug campaign 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', launched on March 1, 2025, and discussed strategic interventions to strengthen this ongoing war against drugs," said DGP Yadav in a statement. Police have recovered 1,020 kg of heroin, 330 kg of opium, 21 tonnes of poppy husk, 14 kg of charas, 377 kg of ganja, 3.3 kg of cocaine, 31.74 lakh intoxicant pills and tablets, and ₹12.25 crores cash from their possession. During the meeting, the DGP also reviewed the state-wide preparedness for upcoming Independence Day celebrations and directed all field units to remain on high alert and ensure foolproof security arrangements. "Security arrangements were reviewed and suitable instructions have been given to maintain peace and harmony by ensuring police presence at all important places, intensifying domination operations and other preventive and detective measures ahead of forthcoming Independence Day celebrations," Yadav said. He said police officers were also asked to conduct checks of all suspicious persons in and around the court complex, besides carrying out checks of all the vehicles parked around the complex by using the Vahan app. He said police teams were also asked to make sure that door frame metal detectors and CCTV cameras installed at the premises of judicial complexes are functioning. Shukla said police teams have frisked as many as 694 suspicious people found roaming around the court complexes. As many as 1,160 vehicles stationed at different parking places around the court premises were also checked, during which police teams issued 129 challans and impounded four vehicles. Two women dead, three injured in fall at religious gathering in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore
Two women were killed and three people injured after a number of devotees fell at a religious gathering in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore district on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), police said. According to the police, the incident took place around 12 p.m. at Kubereshwar Dham of religious preacher Pradip Mishra due to overcrowding at the ashram. Mr. Mishra, a popular religious figure, is scheduled to take out a Kanwar Yatra from his ashram on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) and had called upon devotees to join him, resulting in large crowds at the ashram. Sehore Additional Superintendent of Police Sunita Rawat told The Hindu that during the distribution of Rudraksha (prayer beads), a woman in the front of a queue fainted and collapsed, due to which some other people also fell, causing injuries to some. 'There was no stampede but some people in a queue had fallen, leading to the incident,' Ms. Rawat said, adding that two people received minor injuries while one woman is currently critical. The Additional SP said that the victims are yet to be identified. Another senior officer said that about 50,000 to 60,000 devotees have been coming to the ashram every day during the month of Sawan, and that most of them hail from outside Madhya Pradesh. 'The responsibility of arrangements inside the ashram is on the management. The police and the administration had no role there. Outside the ashram, we have deployed over 400 police personnel for security but we have no role inside,' the officer said, requesting anonymity. 'Before reaching the ashram, they had gone to a river stream nearby to collect holy water by travelling 12 kilometres each side, and after that they stood in line amid the heat and humidity. This may have been the reason of the woman's fainting,' he added.
