Man Utd coach's Alejandro Garnacho comment speaks volumes as Ruben Amorim rages
Alejandro Garnacho appears destined for the Manchester United exit this summer as a former coach's comments hint the player's attitude concerns perhaps aren't new
Worries over Alejandro Garnacho's attitude could land him a spot on the Manchester United departures list this summer. And one former Carrington coach appeared to hint at the South American's penchant for petulance years ago.
Murmurs have been building that Ruben Amorim is ready to sell Garnacho, who was dropped for United's final game of the season against Aston Villa. The Daily Mail reported that on the eve of that fixture, Amorim hung the 20-year-old out to dry in front of his team-mates and told him: "You better pray that you can find a club to sign you."
Justin Cochrane was part of the academy setup when Garnacho helped guide United's under-18s to the FA Youth Cup crown in 2022. The Argentina international was named Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in the same season, but his temperament perhaps didn't always match his on-field performance.
Cochrane, who has since moved to become first-team coach at Brentford, stopped short of hanging his former protege out to dry. But even on the path to success three years ago, there were comments pointing to potential flaws in a then-17-year-old Garnacho's character.
Speaking to Goal in March 2022 about keeping the clearly talented winger grounded, Cochrane said: "I have a good relationship with Garnacho, and he knows that if he crosses the line, I'll come get him!"
The former QPR and Rotherham defender paralleled that comment by saying he and his staff were "pleased" with the player. But even then, talk diverted to ensuring the player's ego remained grounded, something one might not hear unless there were already concerns in that area.
"My job and the staff's job is to keep players grounded and keep their eyes on the prize," added Cochrane. "Not just the youth prize, but the bigger prize of being in the first team and having a sustained career at a high level, so that's what we're focusing on with Garna."
Amorim isn't the first United boss to take issue with Garnacho's behaviour. The Madrid-born star was previously reprimanded by Erik ten Hag after he 'liked' social media posts critical of his half-time substitution in a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last April.
Ten Hag later said his player had apologised over the incident, suggesting they had moved on from the ordeal. However, Garnacho was later dropped by the Dutchman in September 2024, not long before he was fired, for once again liking posts critical of Ten Hag.
Given Cochrane's comments from 2022, it points to a pattern of behaviour most coaches would rather do without. And it appears Amorim has had the last straw, with the player seemingly free to leave if a suitable offer comes in.
Napoli have been strongly linked with the player in recent transfer windows. However, that move could be in jeopardy amid reports Antonio Conte is prepared to leave the club after just one season, in which he secured the Serie A crown.
That could leave the Red Devils scrambling to find a suitor for the player willing to meet their valuation. And that list could only grow shorter if teams looking to invest are at all unsettled when it comes to Garnacho's personality.

Danny Murphy explains why Sancho decision is a 'mistake' in message to Chelsea
Jadon Sancho is set to return to Manchester United this summer, but former England midfielder Danny Murphy believes Chelsea should have done everything possible to keep him Danny Murphy has suggested that Chelsea should have retained Jadon Sancho rather than paying a £5million penalty to return him to Manchester United. The former England player had been on loan at Stamford Bridge for the season, but failed to perform consistently as he scored five goals and provided 10 assists in 42 matches across all competitions. Despite helping Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League during his temporary stint, he only started 19 Premier League games and was not a regular starter under Blues boss Enzo Maresca. Regardless of that, it was reported that the club were in talks to extend his stay in London but failed to agree personal terms with the winger. This led to the club paying a £5m penalty to Manchester United to avoid their obligation to sign him on a permanent deal for £25m. Sancho has just one year remaining on the five-year contract he signed when he joined United in 2021 for £73m, and is set to return to Old Trafford and is likely to be on the move again, with the star not in the plans of boss Ruben Amorim. The future of the 25-year-old remains uncertain, but talkSPORT pundit Murphy believes Chelsea should have clinched a deal to keep the winger. Alongside Jim White and Simon Jordan on talkSPORT, the trio discussed Sancho's future with the former Crystal Palace owner criticised the winger for failing to perform consistently since his move to Manchester. He also implied that Sancho is more concerned about remaining a high earner instead of reviving his international career, given he hasn't been in an England shirt since 2021. "I'd like to think people evolve, young players especially, you have to give them time to make mistakes," Murphy said in response to Jordan's criticism. "But I actually think he's done alright for Chelsea this season when I've seen him. "His technical ability is brilliant. [He] very rarely gives the ball away, now end product is a question mark. He's played in a lot of big games, and that's because he's reliable with the ball and he knows his job." Discussing Sancho's transfer fee, Murphy conceded that the £73m fee paid for him by United might be seen as steep, yet defended Sancho's value at a lesser sum: "He's a bright footballer. "He turned up at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, when he was 20 and because they paid a huge amount for him which was inflated, he was expected to hit [the ground running]. I think Jadon Sancho for £25million is really good value." Upon the announcement of his departure from the Blues, Sancho expressed gratitude towards everyone at Chelsea on social media, posting on Instagram:"Grateful for the experience. "Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home - teammates, staff and the fans. Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful. Thank you, Blues." Airdrie snap up former Hamilton Accies defender for Championship charge
Sean McGinty exercised a relegation release clause at Airdrie's derby rivals Airdrie have signed defender Sean McGinty following his release by Hamilton Accies. The English-born former Ayr United and Morton stopper left Airdrie's derby rivals via relegation release clause at the end of last summer. McGinty, 31, brings experience to the Diamonds, but is also working towards his UEFA 'B' licence, with a view to joining the coaching set-up in the near future. The former Manchester United youth told Airdrie's website: 'I'm absolutely delighted to now be part of the Airdrieonians journey. 'I'm looking forward to working with everyone and adding my commitment, experience and enthusiasm to our team effort in the season that lies ahead. 'The one thing I can promise to everybody, especially the fans, is that I'll give 100 per cent to helping the team be more successful.' McGinty played 44 times for Hamilton last season, scoring four goals, including in a 2-1 defeat at Airdrie on March 8. Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe said: 'Sean is a strong leader who has captained the last two clubs he has been at. 'He's aggressive, and being left-sided, he will provide good balance. 'He has an air of authority and is a good communicator, which should help the current squad immensely. 'We're looking forward to working with him when training resumes.'

Birbraer heads new ownership at Fife Flyers
Fife Flyers have new owners. A North American-based group has been installed as the new management team to run Britain's oldest professional ice hockey club. Former Israeli international, 44-year-old, former Cardiff Devils winger, Max Birbraer, is the new president and general manager, and a spokesman said: 'We are here to build something special.' Kazakhstan-born Birbraer, drafted in Round 3 and 67th overall by National Hockey League side, New Jersey Devils, in 2000, has started work with the club which was formed in 1938, and bosses confirm they are in 'advanced discussions' to appoint a new head coach. Several core players from last season have been contacted and the new owners plan to build what they described as 'a competitive and committed roster'. Hockey agent, Gareth Chalmers, who parted company as managing director of Glasgow Clan and the Braehead Arena in February this year after more than a decade with the club, has joined the Kirkcaldy-based combine as chief commercial and operations officer. Season ticket details will be revealed soon and the spokesman said: 'We're excited to grow our partnerships and business operations with his leadership.' Flyers new bosses say the hard work starts now and they welcome all commercial inquiries. Plans are being made to connect directly to fans. They could include meet and greet, question and answer or a town hall-style event, and the new regime said: 'We want to hear what matters most to you (the fans), what needs to improve, and how we can earn your trust moving forward.' Bosses plan to be more transparent and to provide detailed communication regarding club's architecture, vision and intention. And the statement declared: 'To every supporter: this is your team. We're honoured to be at the helm, and we're ready to give it everything we've got.' The group moved in after former directors, Tom Muir and Jack Wishart, confirmed in early February that they were stepping down after nearly three years at the helm and the newcomers expressed their thanks to those 'who carried the torch before us'. They added: 'From this moment forward, our group is fully responsible for the direction, development, and future of the club, and we take that responsibility seriously. 'It is an honour to lead the UK's oldest and most iconic hockey team.' They claim their mission is clear, to restore the pride, energy, and identity of Fife Flyers hockey — both on and off the ice. The statement added: 'This is a people's club. Fife is the beating heart of Scottish hockey, and its supporters are the soul of this organization. Your loyalty, your voice, and your passion will shape everything we do. 'We are here to build something special, a first-class hockey experience that reflects the grit and character of this town. Under this leadership, we will lead with transparency, we will compete with pride, and we will always listen.' Like this: Like Related
