Not nominated for Star Awards' Best Audio Personality but Dennis Chew says The Breakfast Quartet 'should be confident of ourselves'

AsiaOne20-06-2025
They've won Best Radio Programme for four years consecutively, but the four DJs in local radio station Love 972's The Breakfast Quartet were surprisingly left out of the Best Audio Personality nominations in Star Awards 2025.
Two of the DJs, Dennis Chew and Mark Lee, told AsiaOne in a recent interview that it's not something they worry about. The other two DJs in the team are Marcus Chin and Chen Biyu.
Mark, 56, shared: "I feel that the main reason for us not being nominated is because the judges have different preferences for the styles that each DJ presents.
"It could be a coincidence that this year's judges are a little 'stricter', so 'innocent and cute' DJs like us are not nominated. But it's okay, because the judges are different every year."
Dennis, 51, said: "I feel that it doesn't matter whether we are nominated or not. Most importantly, we should be confident of ourselves, just like how the four of us feel that we are good enough and that's sufficient."
The nominees this year are Yes 933 DJs Chen Ning, Hazelle Teo, Kenneth Chung and Zhu Zeliang as well as Capital 958 DJ Pan Jia Biao.
In response to queries from AsiaOne, a Mediacorp spokesperson said that as with all Star Awards' programme and performance awards, the nominees for Best Audio Personality are determined by a panel consisting of industry veterans and established media practitioners who would evaluate everyone who is eligible with a standard set of criteria.
They added: "Given how competitive this award is, not being nominated in any given year does not necessarily take away from the calibre of their work nor their popularity.
"The Breakfast Quartet remains a contender in the Best Radio Programme category, testament to the enduring excellence the show continues to deliver daily."
The quartet won the above category for four consecutive years from 2021 to 2024.
This year, Dennis' programme Mr Zhou's Ghost Stories is also in the running.
On whether they feel pressured to continue winning the award this year, both of them said the achievement doesn't affect their emotions.
Dennis shared: "To be honest, we didn't expect to go on stage to receive the award. It's a surprise to us every year. So whether or not there is any surprise this year, we would feel the same way."
"If we can receive it for another year, it's the best, but even if we didn't get it this year, it's okay also. Most importantly, it's whether the judges like it or not, because the judges are different every year. If we are awarded again this year, then 'Oh dear, we are the first again!'" Mark quipped.
Both Mark and Dennis received their All-Time Favourite Artiste award in 2010 and 2022 respectively.
The award is given to artistes who have won the Top 10 Most Popular Artiste honour 10 times.
When asked which artistes they wish to see joining them at the 'altar', Dennis shared that he hopes actor-host Guo Liang — who has been in local showbiz for three decades — would bag the award soon, because he "truly deserves it".
For Mark, it would be Marcus, 70, who debuted in local showbiz in the 1970s.
He quipped: "I looked at his fortunes before and concluded he can live till about 95 years old, so if he receives his 10th Top 10 award before 90 and goes up the 'altar', I think it's not bad because he is really very hardworking."
You can vote for the Star Awards Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes from now till July 6, 7.30pm on the Mediacorp website. Voters can make up to 10 votes per account, per award category, per day. On July 6 from 12am to 7.30pm, voters can make unlimited votes for each category.
Star Awards 2025 will be presented on July 6, starting from Backstage Live at 3.30pm to 10.30pm, Walk of Fame from 5pm to 6.30pm, the awards show from 7pm to 10pm and Post-Party from 10pm to 10.30pm.
Backstage Live will air on Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel, while Walk of Fame and the awards show will air on Channel 8, Channel U, Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel.

Thousands turn up in Punggol for 3rd anniversary of Jack Neo's walking group Pa Pa Zao, Singapore News

Local walking group Pa Pa Zao, founded by comedian-director Jack Neo, held their third anniversary celebrations for a cause at Punggol Coast Mall early on Sunday (July 13) morning. An estimated 3,000 participants attended the event, which kicked off at about 8am with warm-up exercises followed by a walk — naturally. Organised in partnership with the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC), the theme for the event was Life Unstoppable, and featured games, performances and appearances by around 80 celebrities and personalities. The event was also graced by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Minister for Law Edwin Tong. Speaking to AsiaOne this morning, Tong, who's also the Second Minister for Home Affairs, called Pa Pa Zao a "great initiative". "It marries fitness with community and you have people from all walks of life coming together, motivated by fitness," he remarked. However, he noted that "fitness alone can't be done when you don't have friends", lauding the initiative for bringing together individuals' friends, family, neighbours and people from their social networks, and using music and fun as the centre of the event. When interviewed by AsiaOne, Jack expressed surprise that the initiative, which he started in 2022 following the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, has continued for as long as it has. He shared in another media interview that he'd started the session on a whim, inviting people on a livestream to join him on a walk at Bukit Timah Hill. "I thought nobody would come to see me, but at the first session, 58 people turned up," he told AsiaOne, adding that the number of participants just grew from there. The 65-year-old added the event's "trademark" is walking and singing together, and the emphasis is on positive energy. "The best part is, after walking for about 5km, we sit down and sing. The atmosphere is hard to get," he elaborated, thanking the approximately 100 volunteers each week, "from the captain to group leaders, block leaders, medics and traffic controllers". Long-time supporters Among the well-known names spotted at Sunday's event included local actors Henry Thia, Aileen Tan, Lin Ruping, Yao Wenlong, Terence Cao, Joey Swee and Mayiduo. Attendees at Sunday's event ranged from newer Pa Pa Zao participants to long-time supporters. Retiree Francis Cheang, 75, shared with AsiaOne that he'd participated in Pa Pa Zao "26 times" - and maybe even more, as they had been attending the meetups regularly since April 2023, his wife Jessie Chia, 64, remembers. "We like to keep healthy and connect with other people, and help each other to be healthy," he shared, with Chia chiming in that they enjoy getting to know like-minded people who like to keep fit. Another couple whom AsiaOne met, retirees Lee Swee Guat, 67, and Teo Yit Huat, 72, took time out amid the former's birthday celebrations to sweat it out at the event. They told AsiaOne that they'd participated in Pa Pa Zao a handful of times because they hope to live a healthy lifestyle and to "make new friends". Participant, 65-year-old retiree Tan Soh Buay, also shared the same sentiments, adding she has attended the walks regularly over two years, while her niece, operator Fam Nyeok Heong, 55, has gone for the walks more than 10 times. Fam added that it is hard to make time for exercise as a working adult and Pa Pa Zao offers a good way to fit in some exercise during the week. Who doesn't forget easily and who doesn't gossip? Hong Huifang, Cynthia Koh and Pierre Png, cast of new Singapore-Thai thriller, talk people politics

Humans are social beings by nature, so surrounding ourselves with people is only inevitable. But when unpleasant words and deeds go around, how do local actors Hong Huifang, Cynthia Koh and Pierre Png navigate their people relations? Pierre Png told AsiaOne that despite how he feels very naive and forgiving, his peers call him a "typical Scorpio". The 51-year-old elaborated: "So far, it seems like it's true — once a friend, always a friend. Once an enemy, good luck to you." When asked if he bears grudges, he replied: "I don't forget. I used to think that I would wait 10 years to take revenge, but now I think god is the best person to mete out punishment and normally, that punishment is just right. When I take matters into my own hands, I might go overboard or cause myself more harm. "So yeah, as easily as I make friends, I forgive and just let it be. But I remember things." The trio were speaking to us recently on the set of Decalcomania, an upcoming eight-part thriller series that is a collaboration between Singapore content studio Mocha Chai Laboratories and Thailand's entertainment giant The One Enterprise. In the series, two women with identical faces — Neungdeaw, a hardened owner of a nightclub in Bangkok and Leia, a sheltered Singaporean socialite — suddenly have their souls swapped after a car crash. Neungdeaw must now learn to survive a world of high-society manipulation, while Leia must navigate a criminal underworld unknown to her. Both Neungdeaw and Leia are played by Thai actress Mookda Narinrak, 28. While Pierre, Cynthia and Huifang don't move in such cutthroat and vicious social circles as the drama characters, we were curious how they handle people relations. When it comes to matters of gossip, they die down with someone like Cynthia, also 51. She said: "I always believe if someone gossips about me and I hear about it, I'll go to the person directly. I won't go anywhere else. And if I hear gossip about someone else, it stops with me. I don't create any tension, and neither am I accepting any tension. That has been my work ethic for many years." Huifang, who has been a veteran in the entertainment industry since her mid-1980s debut, was surprised by the question and shared: "I don't know if I'm good at navigating people politics. I've never handled such situations before. Maybe if I had to, I might not be able to handle it? I'm not so sure. But I prefer to be peaceful." On encountering gossip, the 64-year-old said: "I can listen to gossip, but it's because I cannot move away from it. I'll just keep quiet, because if I add my words in, people will point at me and say that I contributed to the gossip, even no matter the extent." A transnational collaboration Part of a three-generation family unit on the Singaporean side of the thriller, Pierre plays Mark, a policeman who is also a doting husband and emotional "punching bag" to his domineering wife Sue (Cynthia). The latter runs a restaurant with her bitter mother Granny Lu (Huifang), who suspects that her son-in-law is in an affair with Leia. The youngest member of the family Fei Li is portrayed by Gladys Ng, who is half-Singaporean and half-Thai and fluent in the Asian language. A reflection of many youths in our current society, the Star Search 2024 finalist's character is a fanatic when it comes to Thai pop culture. Having recently become a mother-in-law who adores her son-in-law, Huifang is not so similar to her on-screen counterpart. "The more dissimilar my character is from me, the more I enjoy playing them. Granny Lu is too much of a diva — she takes one look at you, and she'll start cursing you out." Although Cynthia is currently single, she resonates with several aspects of her character. "If I were in a relationship, I think I'd talk quite similarly to my partner as Sue — a bit kanchiong , a bit 'grr'!" She continued: "Sue is someone who probably wears the pants at home a little bit. I'm quite a control freak in real life, and I can be quite impatient. To calm me down, I must mindfully and with full awareness say, 'Okay, do not rush. Calm down.'" Decalcomania is the first Thai production for Cynthia, Pierre and Huifang, and there weren't any expectations initially for them to pick up bits of the language. This eventually changed for Pierre however, as he explained: "Initially, nothing was written for me in Thai. But then we had a script-read and a discussion afterwards where we all agreed to have some of the cast members speak a bit of Thai. "Mark speaks a little bit of it because he's been following Peter Woo (Leia's adoptive father played by 'Chai' Chartayodom Hiranyasthiti) throughout his career. And because Peter throws an obstacle in his career path, it eventually takes Mark to Thailand in a back-and-forth investigation where he has some encounters with Thai people." In a 2023 interview with Lianhe Zaobao talking about her role as Lee Soo-jung in Oppa, Saranghae! (2023), Cynthia shared that she was frantic upon realising she had to speak entirely in Korean for a long scene in the drama. Between Korean, Thai, and any other unfamiliar languages in between, the sound therapist revealed her secret formula to navigating the unknown: Phonetics. [[nid:637847]] She explained: "You record the lines and listen to it like a song. And then once I can recognise the romanisation of the language, I will record myself saying the lines and send it back to my language coach and they would tell me what parts of my intonation I need to change." Expanding horizons Huifang, who starred as the main character in the Singapore-South Korea drama film Ajoomma, is looking forward to her involvement in this project. She said: "It's especially because I don't know how to speak Thai that I'm curious how everything's going to work — how the Thai cast and crew will act and work on set, how their industry works. As long as it's something I've never done before, the more excited I am." In 2018, Pierre received acclaim for his role as Michael Teo in the Hollywood film Crazy Rich Asians, where he starred as Gemma Chan's on-screen spouse. Now, working with Thailand's up-and-coming entertainment scene, he reflected: "Any time you get the opportunity to expand your horizons and work with different people, it's always a good thing. You cannot be too complacent staying in one place for too long. "My take from doing international productions is that you see not only the crew — you see the actors and directors from both countries and you realise that what you've learned here in Singapore actually transcends all nations; you're well-equipped and well-prepared." Cynthia also shared the waves she hopes Decalcomania will bring: "I really do hope with my heart that with this co-production, we have more opportunities to open our gateway to more Asian artists, production crew, producers and directors who have so much talent, but feel like an uncut diamond. "Now, it really feels like back in the 1990s or 2000s when singers would have to go overseas and return home to get raving reviews. And now with all the competition, like online streaming, TV can get a little bit rough." Decalcomania is set to debut on Thailand's TV channels One31 and OneD application streaming worldwide in December 2025, with its Singapore broadcast on Mewatch to follow. Star Awards 2025: Chantalle Ng thanks fellow host Guo Liang for saving the day when she blanked out on stage

One thing we love about Chantalle Ng is how she has no qualms calling herself out. All eyes were on the 30-year-old Mediacorp actress when she hosted last Sunday's (Jul 6) Star Awards with Guo Liang. She was poised and expressive, her efforts were very applaudable for someone with zero hosting experience. In fact, we didn't even notice Ng had an 'oops' moment on stage until she pointed it out herself on social media. Ng and Liang were supposed to introduce the presenters for the Best Drama Serial award. Guo Liang started with: "Our next guests are all A-listers. They're the Ah Ge Ah Jies everyone's familiar with. They are..." It is assumed that Ng was supposed to finish Guo Liang's sentence by naming Zoe Tay, Li Nanxing and Fann Wong. But for some reason, Ng says she blanked out and didn't say anything. Thankfully, Guo Liang quickly caught on to what was happening and completed the sentence. Though that moment lasted less than a second, it left a deep enough impression on Ng. "When your co-host blanks out and forgets to announce the presenters, this is how Liang Ge saves the day," the actress wrote on her Instagram story. She also added an embarrassed smiling emoji. We think she's being too hard on herself. We're also not the only ones who think Ng deserves a pat on her back for her performance that night. Singaporean voice actor Zhang Miaoyang, who is a vocal coach at Chinese TV station Phoenix Television as well as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Language Arts Association, took to social media to praise Ng's hosting abilities. "Her Mandarin pronunciation, fluency in the language as well as her elegance and gracefulness caught our eyes. On top of acting, she's definitely a rising star in radio and hosting too," effused Zhang.
