'Give the award to me first': Marcus Chin says suspense in Star Awards' top 10 popularity awards is bad for his weak heart, Entertainment News
Local DJ-host Marcus Chin made a special request to the Star Awards team after bagging his fifth Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes Award last evening (July 6): Please take into consideration his weak heart. Speaking to local media including AsiaOne backstage after the ceremony, the 70-year-old shared: "I wasn't confident about winning this year, especially since our radio show didn't win [Best Radio Programme] also. "We had won for four consecutive years, but The Shuang, Kunz and Jia Trio won this year, so I was quite dejected already and thought this could perhaps be a sign that I wouldn't win Top 10." Marcus hosts Love 972's radio show The Breakfast Quartet with DJs Mark Lee, Dennis Chew and Chen Biyu on weekdays. The team won Best Radio Programme for four consecutive years from 2021 to 2024. The Shuang, Kunz and Jia Trio is a radio show hosted by Yes 933 DJs Kenneth Chung, Hazelle Teo and Chen Qijia. Marcus expressed his appreciation for his family, friends and fans who voted for him. He added: "I still have five more times to win [before achieving the All-Time Favourite Artiste award]. I had a heart attack on Oct 7 last year. I hope if I still win next year, give the award to me first and not let me wait six, seven or eight in line, because I could really feel my heart rate increasing as I was waiting to be called." Marcus was the seventh artiste to be announced as a Top 10 recipient last evening. As he went onstage, he got a selfie with veteran Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat, 70, who presented the award. Romeo Tan receives final Top 10 trophy after 15 years in showbiz Besides Marcus, the other recipients for the category are Yes 933 DJ Jeff Goh, as well as actors Xu Bin, Benjamin Tan, Zong Zijie, Desmond Tan, Richie Koh, Guo Liang, Jeremy Chan and Romeo Tan, with the latter clinching his 10th award after 15 years in showbiz. This means he will receive the All-Time Favourite Artiste award in the next Star Awards ceremony. Romeo, 40, who had to cut his speech short during the show, said backstage: "I definitely want to thank my family, relatives and friends, thank you for voting for me every year. I also want to thank myself. I started as an audience member, became a small-time actor and later a full-time actor. "To be able to stand on stage now and receive my 10th Top 10 award to become an All-Time Favourite Artiste, it's quite an unbelievable journey for me. I am really happy that I still have a group of people who support me and thank you to the audience for liking my shows." View this post on Instagram A post shared by R O M E O T A N (@romeotan) Guo Liang felt 'rollercoaster' of emotions throughout the evening Veteran host Guo Liang, who received a hug from Yun Fat as he received his ninth Top 10 trophy, shared that his "emotions were like a rollercoaster" throughout the show. The 54-year-old, who debuted in local showbiz in 1994, said: "I was anxious at first, as many of my friends and family have supported me and I hoped to win. While hosting the show, I was awestruck by Yun Fat... "Then disappointment hit me when I saw those who had already received the All-Time Favourite Artiste award. Most artistes from my batch had already reached that status and I believed that [I haven't] because I didn't do well enough. "When I finally received the Top 10 award tonight, it was nothing but pure joy and elation. Such an experience is not great... For my last win, please help me out everyone." Keep going, don't give up: Yvonne Lim and Pornsak win All-Time Favourite Artiste awards , Entertainment News
Though it's been a while since they've turned up for Star Awards, it seems their popularity never dimmed. Local actress Yvonne Lim and host Pornsak Prajakwit went home with the All-Time Favourite Artiste trophies tonight (July 6). The accolade is awarded to artistes who have won a cumulative 10 Top 10 Most Popular Artiste awards. Yvonne recently moved back to Singapore with her husband Alex Tien, son AJ and daughter Alexa. She thanked her loved ones and paid tribute to her late mother during her acceptance speech. "I believe it's not fame that makes someone truly memorable. It's sincerity from the heart that allows one to go far. The most precious award isn't the one you hold in your hand, but the one you hold in your heart. "This delayed recognition… I wish one person in particular could have seen this: The person who influenced me the most, and the one I've missed the most these past 35 years, my late mother. Do you see me now? I love you," said the 48-year-old. In an interview with AsiaOne backstage, she said today was particularly meaningful for her. "This return, after 10 years, is different, because I'm surrounded by family. In 2014, when I last stood on this stage, I was only here with my husband. But now, I've returned as a mother, with my children by my side. Even my outfit holds a special meaning. "The gown I'm wearing today belongs to my godmother Grace. She was with me in 2014 and said, 'If you ever win All-Time Favourite Artiste, I hope you'll wear this.' Back then, I thought it was impossible. But now, it's happened. Even the ring I'm wearing is the one Alex used to propose to me." Yvonne told us she "never had a smooth-sailing career": "I've been through many ups and downs. But thankfully, I persisted, otherwise, there wouldn't be a Yvonne Lim today. I wouldn't be standing here. "When I meet rookies, I always tell them, 'Keep going, don't give up.' And when they ask why, I say, 'Because if you truly love this craft, and if you persevere, you will succeed. Your moment will come.' That's what I truly believe." Meanwhile, Pornsak advises aspiring young talents to "experience the pain" first and work on building a fortune later. "I think a lot of us, when we first come into the industry, hope to get both fame and fortune... The ROI (return on investment) will come someday, somehow," he said in an interview with AsiaOne backstage. During his winning speech, the 43-year-old thanked his mentors and boss Michelle Chong: "I know I'm not the strongest, but I'm definitely the luckiest, because I met all of you." Not nominated for Star Awards' Best Audio Personality but Dennis Chew says The Breakfast Quartet 'should be confident of ourselves'
They've won Best Radio Programme for four years consecutively, but the four DJs in local radio station Love 972's The Breakfast Quartet were surprisingly left out of the Best Audio Personality nominations in Star Awards 2025. Two of the DJs, Dennis Chew and Mark Lee, told AsiaOne in a recent interview that it's not something they worry about. The other two DJs in the team are Marcus Chin and Chen Biyu. Mark, 56, shared: "I feel that the main reason for us not being nominated is because the judges have different preferences for the styles that each DJ presents. "It could be a coincidence that this year's judges are a little 'stricter', so 'innocent and cute' DJs like us are not nominated. But it's okay, because the judges are different every year." Dennis, 51, said: "I feel that it doesn't matter whether we are nominated or not. Most importantly, we should be confident of ourselves, just like how the four of us feel that we are good enough and that's sufficient." The nominees this year are Yes 933 DJs Chen Ning, Hazelle Teo, Kenneth Chung and Zhu Zeliang as well as Capital 958 DJ Pan Jia Biao. In response to queries from AsiaOne, a Mediacorp spokesperson said that as with all Star Awards' programme and performance awards, the nominees for Best Audio Personality are determined by a panel consisting of industry veterans and established media practitioners who would evaluate everyone who is eligible with a standard set of criteria. They added: "Given how competitive this award is, not being nominated in any given year does not necessarily take away from the calibre of their work nor their popularity. "The Breakfast Quartet remains a contender in the Best Radio Programme category, testament to the enduring excellence the show continues to deliver daily." The quartet won the above category for four consecutive years from 2021 to 2024. This year, Dennis' programme Mr Zhou's Ghost Stories is also in the running. On whether they feel pressured to continue winning the award this year, both of them said the achievement doesn't affect their emotions. Dennis shared: "To be honest, we didn't expect to go on stage to receive the award. It's a surprise to us every year. So whether or not there is any surprise this year, we would feel the same way." "If we can receive it for another year, it's the best, but even if we didn't get it this year, it's okay also. Most importantly, it's whether the judges like it or not, because the judges are different every year. If we are awarded again this year, then 'Oh dear, we are the first again!'" Mark quipped. Both Mark and Dennis received their All-Time Favourite Artiste award in 2010 and 2022 respectively. The award is given to artistes who have won the Top 10 Most Popular Artiste honour 10 times. When asked which artistes they wish to see joining them at the 'altar', Dennis shared that he hopes actor-host Guo Liang — who has been in local showbiz for three decades — would bag the award soon, because he "truly deserves it". For Mark, it would be Marcus, 70, who debuted in local showbiz in the 1970s. He quipped: "I looked at his fortunes before and concluded he can live till about 95 years old, so if he receives his 10th Top 10 award before 90 and goes up the 'altar', I think it's not bad because he is really very hardworking." You can vote for the Star Awards Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes from now till July 6, 7.30pm on the Mediacorp website. Voters can make up to 10 votes per account, per award category, per day. On July 6 from 12am to 7.30pm, voters can make unlimited votes for each category. Star Awards 2025 will be presented on July 6, starting from Backstage Live at 3.30pm to 10.30pm, Walk of Fame from 5pm to 6.30pm, the awards show from 7pm to 10pm and Post-Party from 10pm to 10.30pm. Backstage Live will air on Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel, while Walk of Fame and the awards show will air on Channel 8, Channel U, Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel.
