Egypt, EBRD Deepen Strategic Partnership in Green and Sustainable Projects
On the sidelines of the 34th Annual Meeting and Business Forum of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Rania A. Al-Mashat, held high-level talks with Matteo Patrone, EBRD Vice President for Banking, and Harry Boyd-Carpenter, Managing Director for Sustainable Infrastructure.
During the meetings, Al-Mashat emphasized Egypt's strong and evolving relationship with the EBRD, highlighting the Bank's vital role in supporting Egypt's private sector, green transformation, and industrial localization efforts.
The discussions focused on deepening cooperation in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, seawater desalination, and sustainable infrastructure, while also addressing technical support for automotive manufacturing and mechanisms to enhance foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into Egypt.
Al-Mashat noted that Egypt remains the EBRD's largest country of operations in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region for the seventh consecutive year. In 2024 alone, the Bank invested €1.5 billion (approximately 84.3 billion EGP) across 26 projects, with 98% directed to the private sector and 50% channeled into green finance.
Since the start of EBRD operations in Egypt in 2012, the partnership has grown to include €13 billion in investments (roughly 730 billion EGP) across 194 development projects, with 80% of this financing benefiting the private sector.
The Minister also spotlighted Egypt's flagship NWFE platform, under which the EBRD plays a leading role in the energy pillar, having helped mobilize $3.9 billion (about 195 billion EGP) in concessional finance for the private sector, accelerating investments in renewable energy.
Al-Mashat stressed the EBRD's role in modernizing Egypt's electricity grid to accommodate future renewable energy capacity, with plans to add 10 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2028, in line with Egypt's integrated and sustainable energy strategy.
She reaffirmed the government's continued focus on macroeconomic stability and private sector-led growth, underpinned by structural reforms initiated in March 2024. These reforms have helped deliver strong growth in the non-oil manufacturing, ICT, tourism, and transportation sectors, despite global pressures and declining Suez Canal revenues.

PM: Egypt Projects Natural Gas Output to Reach 6.6 Bcf/Day by 2027
Ahmed Emam Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Wednesday that the country expects to boost its natural gas production to 6.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2027, up from the current 4.1 Bcf/d. Egypt, European Bank to launch €10 Million projects account
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has issued a new presidential decree, #146 of 2025, approving a cooperation agreement to establish a Projects Account in Egypt between the Egyptian government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with a capital of 10 million Euros. The House of Representatives, headed by Counselor Hanafi al-Gebali, had approved the presidential decree during its general session on May 11. The agreement aims to create the 'Projects Account in Egypt' with the goal of accelerating the launch of investment projects by financing feasibility studies and technical consultations. It also seeks to reduce the time it takes to begin implementing public-private partnership (PPP) projects from one year to two months. The project is expected to attract both local and foreign investment through simplified procedures and technical support.

Germany Spends €80 Mln on Border Controls
Israa Farhan Germany has spent €80.5 million on land border control operations between mid-September 2024 and the end of June 2025, according to figures released by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The measures, initially introduced as a temporary exception to the Schengen Area's free movement rules, have since been repeatedly extended. The expenditure covers a wide range of costs, including €24 to €29.1 million per quarter for deploying federal police along internal borders. Between April and June 2025 alone, the government paid €8 million for meals and hotel accommodation for police officers, almost €3 million in allowances for working unsociable hours, €2.6 million for administrative and operational resources, and around €2 million for running border checkpoints. Overtime pay represented the largest single expense, amounting to €37.9 million during the period from September 2024 to June 2025. Former Interior Minister Nancy Faeser first imposed the land border checks in September 2024, citing the need to curb irregular migration and combat cross-border crime. Her successor, Alexander Dobrindt, intensified these measures upon taking office in May 2025, announcing further extensions beyond September this year and introducing a policy of turning away asylum seekers directly at the border. Between 8 May and 4 August 2025, federal police refused entry to 493 people who had expressed an intention to seek asylum in Germany. Critics, including opposition figures, have condemned the policy as unlawful and harmful to both travelers and asylum seekers.
