ADJD showcases rehabilitation initiatives, inspiring stories of inmates on World Inmate Day
ABU DHABI (WAM)The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) organised a celebratory event on the occasion of World Inmate Day, in line with its ongoing efforts to promote the concept of restorative justice and highlight pioneering initiatives for the rehabilitation of inmates and their reintegration into society.The event was attended by several strategic partners and entities supporting rehabilitation programs.On this occasion, Counselor Yousef Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, emphasised that celebrating World Inmate Day reflects the Department's commitment to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, which aims to enhance the role of correctional facilities as platforms for personal development.He pointed out the Department's focus on implementing comprehensive rehabilitation programs that address psychological, social, and vocational aspects, contributing to character building and enabling inmates to follow a positive path after completing their sentences.The official celebration at the Department's headquarters began with a documentary film showcasing real-life experiences of several inmates, highlighting their journeys within correctional centres and the success stories made possible by the integrated rehabilitation programs, reflecting the impact these initiatives have had on rebuilding inmates' personalities and motivating positive change.The event also featured a presentation of initiatives and projects launched since the beginning of 2025 in partnership with the Authority of Social Contributions – Ma'an and Hayat Post-Care Association. Key initiatives included the Digital Creative Studio, which provides training in advanced graphic design and video editing, as well as the support of a Fine Arts Centre and programming training courses aimed at equipping inmates with modern digital skills.Rehabilitation programmes also included the implementation of a Quran Memorization Program that benefited over 500 male and female inmates, in addition to the launch of the "Travel Bag" project, which provides inmates with essential supplies to help them begin their new lives upon release.The event further highlighted the contributions of the "Faraj Fund", which provided Dh1.2 million in financial aid to secure the release of financially distressed inmates in the first half of the year. Moreover, Higher Colleges of Technology initiatives provided job-market training benefiting 70 inmates, while the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat organised religious lectures and Quran competitions for more than 600 inmates.Prior to the main celebration, internal activities were held at Al Wathba and Al Ain correctional centres, including artistic and theatrical performances, cultural competitions, the honouring of graduates from the job readiness program, and academically outstanding inmates. The program also featured creative contributions and success stories from inmates, illustrating the positive transformation achieved through rehabilitation efforts.At the conclusion of the event, the Judicial Department honoured several partners and institutions supporting rehabilitation projects, including: the General Directorate of Penal and Correctional Institutions at the Ministry of Interior, the Authority of Social Contributions – Ma'an, Hayat Post-Care Association, Faraj Fund, Higher Colleges of Technology, the National Rehabilitation Center, Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, and the Emirates Red Crescent.
The honoured entities expressed their pride in their constructive partnership with Abu Dhabi Judicial Department and affirmed their commitment to continuing joint efforts to develop impactful programs that make a real difference in the lives of inmates and open new horizons for a stable future.

Thousands are expected to gather in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of deadly protests that ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. "Fallen autocrats and their self-serving allies remain active," he added, and called for unity to protect the gains of the uprising while his government holds reform talks with political parties and civil society. His interim government had launched sweeping reforms, while trials for those responsible for the "July killings" were progressing swiftly, he added. Security forces and police were on high alert in the capital, with armoured vehicles patrolling the city to ensure any attempts by supporters of Ms Hasina's banned Awami League political party to disrupt the events are deterred. "Let this anniversary not be a day of retrospection, but a rallying cry for a brighter tomorrow," Ms Hasina said in an open letter to the people of Bangladesh. She pointed out she had never resigned as prime minister. The July Declaration, to be announced later in the day by Mr Yunus, will recognise the 2024 student-led uprising and the shift from authoritarian rule to democratic renewal. Despite some opposition, it is backed by major political groups, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia. Prosecutors have filed five charges against Ms Hasina, including failure to prevent mass murder, which amount to crimes against humanity under Bangladeshi law. The first witness in the trial gave evidence on Sunday. "Sheikh Hasina was the nucleus around whom all the crimes committed during the July-August uprising revolved," chief prosecutor Tajul Islam told the court.

Image credit: WAM In a major step to bolster the country's anti-narcotics efforts, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a federal decree-law establishing the National Anti-Narcotics Authority (NANA). The new independent body, reporting directly to the UAE Cabinet, replaces the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at the Ministry of Interior, Read- Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan has been appointed as the Chairman of the newly formed Authority. The move aims to unify and strengthen federal and local efforts in combating drug-related crimes and ensure the safety and well-being of communities across the UAE. This includes coordinating with relevant agencies at both federal and local levels to track and dismantle smuggling and distribution networks. Its expanded mandate reflects the UAE's strategic vision to provide a robust legislative and operational environment for addressing drug-related threats. By consolidating responsibilities under one federal entity, the government aims to ensure cohesive national policies, faster response to emerging drug trends, and tighter law enforcement. Among its core responsibilities, NANA will work closely with judicial and security bodies to ensure offenders are prosecuted under the nation's laws. It will also oversee the development of legal frameworks and submit new regulations to the Cabinet for approval, ensuring alignment with international best practices. Stronger controls at entry points As part of its operational scope, the authority will monitor land, sea, and air entry points in collaboration with national entities to prevent the entry or exit of narcotic substances. It will track and inspect individuals, goods, and vehicles, with the aim of curbing illicit activities at the country's borders. In addition, NANA will monitor suspicious activities and suspected trafficking operations nationwide, working with concerned authorities to bolster intelligence capabilities and early detection mechanisms. The authority is also charged with regulating the circulation of chemical precursors used in drug manufacturing. It will propose licensing mechanisms and oversee trading, storage, and customs clearance procedures in coordination with relevant agencies. These measures aim to prevent the misuse of chemicals while ensuring lawful handling for legitimate purposes. Unified data and national coordination To enhance inter-agency cooperation, the Authority will establish and manage a centralised national database. The system will be accessible to all federal and local bodies involved in anti-narcotics operations and will facilitate real-time information sharing, coordinated responses, and improved decision-making. By enhancing the flow of intelligence and aligning strategic goals across the country, the UAE seeks to build a more resilient and responsive framework to confront drug-related threats.

22 Palestinians martyred in Israeli strikes across Gaza
Twenty-two Palestinians were martyred early Saturday morning, including 12 aid recipients and three women, by Israeli gunfire and shelling across the Gaza Strip, WAFA News Agency reported. According to medical sources, 12 martyrs arrived at Al-Shifa Hospital west of Gaza City from the aid area on the Netzarim axis.
