Kirby shines as the Mariners beat the Orioles 1-0 for their 8th straight victory
Seattle pulled within a half-game of AL West-leading Houston, with the Astros playing at Boston on Tuesday night. Josh Naylor's RBI single in the first inning was all the scoring the Mariners needed.
Kirby (8-5) struck out seven without a walk. Eduard Bazardo and Gabe Speier worked the eighth, and Andrés Muñoz labored through the ninth for his 28th save in 34 chances.
The Orioles had the top of the order batting in the ninth, but Jackson Holliday grounded softly to the pitcher and Jordan Westburg struck out swinging. Gunnar Henderson walked, and then there was a lengthy delay as Muñoz was tended to on the mound. He eventually took a drink from a cup — as the crowd booed — and then Adley Rutschman singled.
Ryan Mountcastle came within a few feet of giving Baltimore its first walk-off win of the year, but his drive to left field curled foul. He then hit a routine grounder to the shortstop.
Dean Kremer (8-9) was a hard-luck loser after allowing a run and five hits in eight innings.
Cal Raleigh, baseball's current home run leader, went 0 for 4 for Seattle.
Kirby allowed only one man to reach scoring position, when Henderson hit a two-out double in the fourth. Rutschman then struck out swinging.
The Mariners were only 1 for 2 with runners in scoring position.

(Photo credit: Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images) Meeting for the second time in three days, this time in the WNBA's first regular-season game outside the United States, the red-hot Atlanta Dream will try to make matters worse for the reeling Seattle Storm on Friday in Vancouver. The neutral site game in Canada will mark the fifth time the league has played internationally, following preseason exhibitions in Mexico (2004), England (2011), Toronto (2023) and Edmonton (2024). Friday will also be a precursor to the first WNBA team based outside the States, as the Toronto Tempo will begin play next season. Atlanta (21-11) remains in the Pacific Northwest following its 85-75 victory at Seattle on Wednesday. The Dream extended their season-long winning streak to six games and overtook the New York Liberty by half a game atop the Eastern Conference standings. Rhyne Howard, in her second game back from a knee injury after a monthlong absence, led the Dream with 25 points, including three 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter to help Atlanta pull away. 'It's fun to have her back,' Dream head coach Karl Smesko said of Howard. 'To break out like she did, especially at the end of the third quarter, that's exactly what she's capable of doing and it was huge for us.' Allisha Gray leads Atlanta with 19 points per game, followed by Howard's 16.3 ppg. The Dream will again be without starting point guard Jordin Canada (right hamstring), who was hurt Sunday against the Phoenix Mercury. Seattle (16-17) enters play 0-6 in August, the team's longest losing skid since dropping 10 in a row in 2023. Each of the Storm's five previous defeats were decided by four points or fewer before Wednesday's 10-point setback. 'These moments, they deflate us and we can't get them back,' Seattle head coach Noelle Quinn said. 'For me as a coach, it's about empowering and providing confidence and having a next-play mentality, but individual players have to find that within themselves and pour that into their teammates. ... Time is running out and my team knows it.' In the midst of a dreadful stretch, veteran Nneka Ogwumike has scored in double figures in 16 straight games, including a 29-point output on Wednesday. Ogwumike is averaging 18.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Storm, who are in danger of missing out on the postseason for just the seventh time in 26 seasons.

NL East-leading Phillies going with a 6-man rotation when Aaron Nola returns on Sunday
WASHINGTON (AP) — Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Thursday that he will utilize a six-man rotation beginning this weekend when Aaron Nola returns from the injured list. Nola is lined up for the series finale Sunday at Washington. The 32-year-old right-hander is coming back from a right ankle sprain. Left-hander Ranger Suárez takes the mound on Monday against the Mariners. The NL East leaders also have ace right-hander Zack Wheeler, lefties Cristopher Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo, and right-hander Taijuan Walker. Thomson said he isn't sure how long he is going to use the six-man rotation. 'Once for sure and then we've got some other ideas how to attack this thing as we move forward,' he said. Philadelphia starters lead the majors with 687 1/3 innings pitched. Sánchez is up to 150 2/3 innings, and Wheeler is at 144 2/3. 'Just getting some of these guys some extra rest cause we've been grinding on them pretty hard all year,' Thomson said before the opener of a four-game set against the Nationals. 'The one downside to it is you've got to take somebody out of your bullpen, so you're a little short there but we'll just have to figure it out.' Nola hasn't pitched in the majors since May 14. He posted a 2.19 ERA in three rehab starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley while striking out 17 batters in 12 1/3 innings. Tomoyuki Sugano earns 10th victory as Orioles outlast Mariners 5-3 after long rain delay
BALTIMORE (AP) — Rookie Tomoyuki Sugano earned his 10th victory by working 5 1/3 sharp innings before a lengthy rain delay, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-3 on Thursday. Julio Rodríguez homered for Seattle, which has dropped consecutive games since winning eight in a row. The Mariners (67-55) fell 1 1/2 games behind AL West-leading Houston. Catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads the majors with 45 home runs, was out of Seattle's starting lineup for only the fifth time this season. He walked as pinch-hitter in the ninth. Sugano (10-5) won back-to-back starts for the first time. The 35-year-old from Japan threw 81 pitches and was pulled after the 2-hour, 18-minute delay. Rodriguez hit reliever Rico Garcia's fourth pitch after play resumed into the bleachers in right-center, a two-run shot to bring the Mariners within 5-2. Dietrich Enns allowed Randy Arozarena's one-out RBI grounder in the ninth, but retired Josh Naylor on one pitch to earn his first save since Sept. 20, 2021. The Orioles took the lead against Logan Evans (6-5) in the fourth inning.
