MB Patil urges Centre to clear decks for Bengaluru's 2nd airport

New Delhi: Industries and infrastructure development minister MB Patil Thursday pressed union civil aviation minister K Ramamohan Naidu to fast-track key aviation projects in the state, including finalising the location for Bengaluru's proposed second international airport.
"Once finalised, this would enable the state govt to proceed with follow-up works," Patil said.
He also sought central clearance for the inauguration of the Vijayapura airport, which is ready to launch pending the environment ministry's nod.

Emphasising the potential of north Karnataka for investments, Patil sought international status for Hubballi and Belagavi airports.
Both airports now have passenger terminals with capacities of 2,400 passengers per hour and feature night-landing and cargo terminals.
Upgrading them would "boost connectivity for north Karnataka, south Maharashtra and Goa," he said.
During the meeting, airport development in Mysuru, Shivamogga, Hassan, Karwar, and Raichur also came up for discussion.
Patil urged the Centre to grant Karnataka stakeholder status in the airport monetisation programme. "Despite Karnataka's key role… it has not been granted stakeholder status," he said, citing Rs 319 crore for Mysuru runway expansion, Rs 450 crore for land at Hubballi, and full funding of Kalaburagi airport.

Air India releases Rs 25 lakh interim compensation to more families of crash victims
New Delhi: Air India said on Saturday that so far, its has released the interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of 147 of the 229 deceased passengers, and also the 19 persons who lost their lives at the accident site of the AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad. In addition, the requisite documents of 52 others have been verified, to whose families the interim compensation will be released progressively, the Tata Group-owned airline said in a statement. Over a month ago, Air India started releasing interim payment of Rs 25 lakh to the affected families, to help them meet their immediate financial needs. 'Air India stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI 171 accident. We continue to mourn their loss and remain fully committed to providing support during this difficult time,' said the airline. To provide further support, the Tata Group has also registered 'The AI 171 Memorial and Welfare Trust.' The Trust has promised to restore the infrastructure of the B.J. Medical College Hostel, which was damaged in the accident, and to provide an ex gratia payment of Rs 1 crore for each of the deceased. The Trust will also provide aid and assistance for alleviation of any trauma or distress suffered by the first responders, medical and disaster relief professionals, social workers, and governmental staff who provided invaluable institutional support and service in the aftermath of the accident, as per the statement. Last month, an Air-India flight from Ahmedabad to London crashed shortly after take-off, killing 241 on board and 19 on the ground. A preliminary report by the Air Accidents Investigation Bureau (AAIB) revealed that the aircraft's engines had shut down just seconds after take-off due to fuel supply being cut off. However, a full report is yet to be announced.

Saving the snow leopard in Himachal: Big Cat Alliance donates Rs 3cr for Tsarap Chu Conservation Reserve
1 2 Shimla: A team of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), led by Soumitra Dasgupta, has presented a Rs 3-crore cheque to chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for the conservation and management of the newly notified Tsarap Chu Conservation Reserve in Lahaul and Spiti district, which has a high density of snow leopards. Tsarap Chu was formally notified as India's largest conservation reserve on May 7, covering an area of 1,585 square kilometres. The reserve is located in a strategic trans-Himalayan region, bordering the Union Territory of Ladakh in the north, Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary in the east, Kabjima Nullah in the south, and Chandertal Wildlife Sanctuary and Baralacha Pass in the west. Tsarap Chu Conservation Reserve is located in one of the high-density habitats of the snow leopards in Himachal Pradesh and supports a rich variety of Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan flora and fauna, including species such as Tibetan Wolf, Kiang, Bharal, Ibex, Tibetan Argali, and avifauna like Rose Finches, Tibetan Ravens, and Yellow-billed Choughs. Expressing gratitude for the support, Sukhu said the funds would catalyse early-stage conservation activities such as the preparation of the management plan, the constitution of the conservation reserve management committee, and capacity building of relevant stakeholders.
