Be alert to crimes in society: A.P. Women's Commission chief
Addressing an awareness campaign on 'Women's safety and rights' at Sai Aram here on Thursday, Ms. Sailaja urged women and girls to be alert to crimes in the society, particularly online frauds, and face the challenges boldly.
She urged them not to fall prey to false promises. 'You must educate yourselves, stay away from adverse influences, and make your parents proud by concentrating on education and empowerment,' the Women's panel chief said.
The programme, conducted by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, commenced with with the lighting of inaugural lamp, and featured an exhibition on women's protection schemes. Ms. Sailaja released the publicity poster 'Protecting Women in Distress is the Government's Mission' and a book titled The Safety Net: Protecting Children in the Digital Age.
She urged the young women and girls to download the Shakti app and use it whenever they sensed danger.
Superintendent of Police (SP) V. Ratna spoke about the police initiatives, such as the EAGLE app and toll‑free helpline 1972 for immediate assistance. Puttaparthi MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy, government officials, NGOs, and women groups attended the programme.

Kurnool: A half-yearly crime review meeting was convened on Thursday at the Vyas Auditorium, District Police Office, Kurnool. The meeting was presided over by Kurnool Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dr Koya Praveen and District SP Vikrant Patil. The session saw the participation of DSPs, Circle Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors from across the district. He commended the district for maintaining a peaceful atmosphere post-district reorganisation and urged officers to ensure there was no scope for unrest or public nuisances. 'Police stations must symbolise safety. If justice is delivered promptly at the local level, there will be no need for victims to approach higher authorities,' he stated. The DIG also encouraged all officers to upgrade their technical skills and adapt to modern investigative tools to stay ahead in crime control and public service. SP Vikrant Patil, in his address, reviewed the status of pending cases and called for increased use of surveillance technology and pre-emptive measures to deter criminal activity. He stressed the need for proper maintenance of CCTV cameras, strict action against habitual offenders, and swift investigations, particularly in property-related and POCSO cases. Officers were instructed to utilise digital tools such as CCTNS, e-Summons and e-Sakshya for efficient case management. The meeting concluded with the distribution of appreciation certificates to police officers who exhibited outstanding performance in recent months. A detailed analysis of the district's crime data from the past six months was presented, highlighting progress in investigations and crime prevention initiatives. As part of the anti-drug campaign led by the Eagle team, the DIG and SP jointly launched awareness posters titled 'Say Goodbye to Drugs' and 'No to Drugs, Bro'. Citizens were urged to report drug-related information via the toll-free number 1972.

Puttaparthi: Andhra Pradesh State Women's Commission chairperson Dr Rayapati Shailaja declared that supporting women in distress and ensuring the safety of every girl is a primary objective of the government. Speaking at a district-level awareness programme here on Thursday, she underscored the critical need for women and girls to be aware of their rights, legal protections, and safety measures. The event, organised by the department of women and child welfare, was attended by key officials including district SP V Ratna and Puttaparthi MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy. In her address, Dr Shailaja called for a proactive approach to safety. 'Awareness must begin at the school and college level. Instead of reacting only after crimes occur, it is crucial to take preventive steps,' she stated, referencing persistent issues like child marriages, domestic violence, and workplace harassment. She cautioned against the misuse of mobile phones and encouraged them to pursue their dreams with determination, calling education the key to success. Echoing these sentiments, district SP Ratna noted that the police department is also conducting similar awareness programmes and highlighted the availability of the Eagle app and the toll-free number 1972 for quick response to safety complaints. MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy championed gender equality, reminding the audience that girls are capable of achieving anything, including space missions, and that education is essential to their empowerment. Hyderabad: After facing sharp criticism for allegedly shielding a senior Telangana intelligence officer's son in a drug case, the Nizamabad police have finally arrested Rahul Teja, nearly 18 months after he was named in an NDPS case registered in January 2024. With this latest development, Teja is now officially accused in two separate drug-related cases, both under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Teja, who was previously marked as absconding in the 2024 Nizamabad case, was arrested a few days ago following a prison transit warrant obtained by Dichpally police. He was taken into custody from Cherlapally Central Jail, where he was lodged in connection with a separate drug case unearthed earlier this month, and was produced before a local court in Nizamabad, which formally recorded his arrest. 'While returning, Nick handed over his phone to an associate in Delhi so that communication with Indian customers and sub-peddlers could continue seamlessly,' EAGLE sources told TOI.
