ED raids against Ozone Urbana Developers in homebuyers 'fraud' case
BENGALURU : The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches against a Bengaluru-based real estate company and its promoters who are accused of duping home buyers worth crores of rupees in the name of selling them flats in their residential project, official sources said. At least ten premises of Ozone Urbana Developers Pvt. Ltd. and its key management personnel were raided in Bangalore and Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. The main promoter of the group is Satyamoorthi Vasudevan . The company and its promoters were booked by the ED after taking cognisance of multiple police FIRs registered against them related to a residential project named Ozone Urbana in Devanahalli Taluk of Bengaluru. The integrated township project was to be handed over to buyers in 2018. However, till 2024, only 49 per cent of the project was completed, the sources said. The company "failed" to hand over the project and has neither returned the money to the buyers, they claimed. It is alleged that the accused company and its key management personnel "cheated" gullible home buyers by promising to pay their bank EMIs (taken for purchase of homes) until completion of the project. The company also promised many buyers "huge" discounts, if they pay full amount in advance against the bookings and it also allegedly lured them with a "buyback scheme". It is alleged that the directors of the said company cheated its buyers collectively to the tune of hundreds of crores and misappropriated the funds, the ED sources said.

A Gujarati doctor was duped into transacting Rs 19 crore after she was digitally arrested by fraudsters who accused the woman of having objectionable content on her phone. Tinder date scams, credit card scams, home loan scams, Microsoft scams, anti-virus scams – Indians can't seem to catch a break. And now, there's a new scam in town and it has left the victims scarred for life. Recently, a Gujarat-based doctor ended up transferring Rs 19 crore after she received a call by the 'authorities" who told her that she had objectionable content on phone. Then the blackmailing began. The doctor, fearing became the victim of a 'digital arrest". The callers disguised themselves as sub-inspector, public prosecutor, among others. These scammers instilled fear in the doctor who began sending out her lifesavings to safeguard herself from a 'money laundering" case. What Is Digital Arrest? Digital arrest is a cyber scam where a victim receives calls or emails from fraudsters posing as law enforcement. These callers 'arrest" the unsuspecting victims and blackmail them by extorting money or sharing personal information for the crimes they have not committed. With nowhere to go and cornered by the fear tactics, the victims end up losing money or data to these scammers. Scammers Go After Big Fish The aforementioned sensational case of Gujarat doctor losing Rs 19 crore to digital arrest was only the tip of the iceberg. According to reports, the fraudsters, riding high on their catch, even secured a loan against the doctor's gold jewellery. They transferred those funds as well. Earlier in January, popular social media personality Ankush Bahuguna had revealed that he had become a victim of digital arrest. Recounting the 40 hours of being held 'hostage" by the fraudsters, Bahuguna shared that he was coerced into making financial transactions after they accused him of false accusations. How could a social media influencer fall for digital arrest asked fans and trolls. 'To everyone saying how could you fall for it it's a scam – It's easy to say but not everybody reacts the same way to panic, not everybody is aware of this scam, so many people have lost lakhs & crores to this scam. These people do research on you & tell you things they know will affect you & that's exactly what happened. I don't wish this on anyone. Stay safe and instead of calling this stupid, make ppl around you aware of it," wrote Bahuguna on Instagram. Bahuguna revealed that he received an automated call from an international number claiming a cancelled package delivery, prompting him to press 'zero' and connect to a scammer who alleged a package with illegal substances linked to his Aadhar details was sent to China. The scammer warned of a serious crime and an arrest warrant, pressuring a panicked Ankush by claiming there was no time to visit a police station. The representative then offered to connect him directly to the police, exploiting his fear in a digital arrest scam. Bengaluru Women Forced To Strip Two women were made to strip on a video call for a 'medical examination" to identify birthmarks and tattoos. The fraudsters, posing as Mumbai cops, recorded their video and started blackmailing them. The two women endured a 9-hour call in what became the digital arrest from hell. First Conviction Earlier in July, nine were convicted in a digital arrest by West Bengal court. The convicts were found guilty of duping a retired agricultural scientist of nearly Rs 1 crore. The accused persons were found guilty under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. FIFA, CAS Decisions Can Now Be Challenged By Tribunals Outside Switzerland, Rules EU Top Court
The European Court of Justice ruled that EU courts can review FIFA and CAS decisions, challenging Swiss-based arbitration. In a landmark ruling, the European Union's highest court determined on Friday that decisions made by FIFA, world football's governing body, can be contested in courts outside of Switzerland. Why is this monumental? Well, the decision significantly weakens the long-standing requirement that legal challenges against sports rulings must go through Swiss-based arbitration. EU Courts Can Review CAS Rulings The European Court of Justice (ECJ), based in Luxembourg, stated that courts within the 27 EU member states must have the authority to conduct a thorough review of arbitral decisions to ensure they align with European Union law. 'Tribunals in the 27 EU member states must be able to carry out an in-depth review of those awards for consistency with the fundamental rules of EU law," the ECJ said in an official statement. This ruling effectively allows national courts within the EU to review and potentially overturn decisions made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Lausanne-based tribunal that handles disputes in global sports. According to the ECJ, the arbitration awards made by CAS cannot be immune to judicial scrutiny, especially where fundamental rights and public policy of the EU are concerned. 'The awards made by the CAS must be amenable to effective judicial review," the Court emphasized. It added that 'national courts or tribunals must be empowered to carry out … an in-depth judicial review" to ensure these awards conform to 'EU public policy." Neither FIFA nor CAS issued immediate responses following the ruling. A Decade-Long Legal Battle The decision stems from a case brought by Belgian football club RFC Seraing and Maltese investment firm Doyen Sports, who began their legal fight against FIFA in 2015. The dispute centered on FIFA's ban on third-party ownership (TPO) of players' economic rights—an arrangement where external investors hold a stake in a player's financial value, often influencing transfer decisions. RFC Seraing and Doyen challenged the rule in a Belgian commercial court, arguing that the prohibition on TPO violated EU competition law. However, FIFA's regulations required that any challenge to its rules be taken to CAS, where the ban was upheld. The ECJ's ruling now potentially reopens the door for such challenges within national legal systems. Impact on Switzerland-Based Sports Tribunals CAS was established in 1984 by the International Olympic Committee to serve as a centralized venue for resolving sports-related disputes. Based in Lausanne, it has traditionally held binding authority in cases involving FIFA, UEFA, and other major sporting organizations headquartered in Switzerland. However, Friday's ruling marks the latest legal blow to the dominance of Swiss sports bodies within the EU. It follows two other significant ECJ judgments that challenged FIFA and UEFA's control under EU competition law. One was the high-profile European Super League case, and the other involved French footballer Lassana Diarra, whose transfer dispute also questioned the legitimacy of FIFA regulations under EU law.
