18 FIRs filed against heavy vehicles for violating entry restrictions at 32 key intersections in Pune

1 2 3 4 5 6 Pune: The Pune police have filed 18 FIRs against drivers and owners of heavy vehicles for violating entry restrictions at 32 key intersections. These restrictions were implemented to prevent accidents and traffic congestion. Additional commissioner of police (east region) Manoj Patil said on Saturday that the decision to file cases was primarily triggered bythe fatal incident on June 11, where a 29-year-old pillion rider lost her life when a truck hither scooter at Gangadham Chowk. Heavy vehicles are prohibited on that stretch. Patil explained that strict enforcement under sections 281 (endangering human life) and 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) became necessary as heavy vehicles continued to disregard the restrictions despite previous penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. The traffic police have banned goods trucks, tankers, containers, buses, cranes, trailers, excavators, cement mixers, and other multi-axle vehicles in the red zone or central parts of the city. These areas include the Deccan Gymkhana area, Laxmi Road, Tilak Road, Shivaji Road, Bajirao Road, Shivajinagar, all Peth areas, Parnakuti, Koregaon Park and Bremen Chowk, among other places. This measure aims to regulate and decongest traffic during peak hours after consulting all stakeholders. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Police have observed that vehicles start flouting the ban over a period of time, creating dangerous situations, mainly in places such as Gangadham Chowk, Satara Road, Parvati, Warje Malwadi, and Paud Phata, among others. "Harsher punishment is required to take action against them under BNS," Patil said, adding that Gangadham Chowk would be included in the red zone list. Assistant commissioner of police (Swargate traffic division) Ashwini Rakh said the police have deployed sufficient manpower at Gangadham Chowk to deter heavy vehicles from flouting the ban between 6am and 11pm. "Essential vehicles travelling to Market Yard for loading and unloading of goods can ply between 11pm and 6am. We have started registering FIRs against violators either by taking action in person or through the CCTV cameras," Rakh said. "We have requested civic officials to reduce the height of a gradient connecting Gangadham Chowk, construct speedbreakers, install height barriers, paint white lines, and display signboards to prevent accidents, congestion, and violation of the ban on priority," Rakh added. Retired ACP Subhash Nikam said, "Analysis of accidents caused by heavy vehicles has revealed that most of the victims die after coming under its rear wheels. The cleaner's side is a blind spot for the driver because a large number of vehicles do not have a side view mirror. Accidents occur because the driver does not have a clear view of the vehicle's left side." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
