Hyderabad traffic police crack down on illegal sirens and musical horns
Nearly 1,000 cases against the illegal use of sirens and multi-toned or musical horns were booked by the Hyderabad traffic police in a fortnight-long special drive. Launched on August 4, the enforcement and awareness campaign is aimed at curbing the nuisance caused by unauthorised horns which not only cause public nuisance and panic but also lead to confusion on roads and accidents. Between August 4 and 19, police booked 590 cases against motorists for using sirens and 397 cases for the use of multi-toned or musical horns. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis said the special drive would continue in the coming weeks. Citing Rule 119 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 and Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, police reminded the public that such horns are strictly prohibited. Citizens have been advised to voluntarily remove them from their vehicles to avoid penal action. The Traffic Police also urged road users to report violations through their social media handles or the traffic helpline number 9010203626.

At 184, this Bullet leads the challan race in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad: Traffic police have identified 41,183 vehicles with five or more pending challans from Jan 2022 to July 2023. Of these, details of 8,500 vehicles—more than 60% of them commercial—have been forwarded to the regional transport office (RTO) for suspension of driving licences (DLs) and registration certificates (RCs). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Additional DCP (traffic) Sachidanand told TOI that so far, notices have been issued to 200 vehicle owners, warning them of strict action under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, if dues remain unpaid. The notices warn vehicle owners that failure to clear dues within 15 days will lead to suspension of registration and licence, with RCs liable to be cancelled for up to six months and DLs suspended for three months. Officials said the move to seek cancellation of licences stems from two concerns— non-payment of fines and rising accidents caused by repeat traffic violations. Data analysis by the traffic police showed a direct link between frequent violations such as speeding, drunk driving, wrong-side driving, and jumping signals and the rising number of road mishaps in the region. "Our analysis shows a fair number of drivers habitually flout rules. Such offenders are a serious threat to other road users. Road accidents have been rising over the past three to four years, and repeat violations are a major factor. That is why we have written to the transport department to cancel their licences," Sachidanand said. According to the additional DCP, 30 vehicles alone were issued challans for more than 100 violations during this period, none of which have been cleared. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "I have asked all ACPs and traffic inspectors to trace these vehicles and seize them within three days," he said. Data shared by the traffic department shows the vehicle with the highest number of challans is a Bullet bike — Royal Enfield 350 (UP14EN5355) — with 184 challans, none of which have been paid. Second on the list is a bus (UP14HT9765), which accumulated 213 challans over the last three years; the owner has cleared only 50, leaving 163 unpaid. A TVS Sports bike (UP14EK3759) ranks third with 146 challans, followed by an LMB Chevrolet Beat (HR29Y4222) with 136 challans. In fifth place is an auto-rickshaw (UP14LT8234) with 133 challans. PK Singh, RTO Ghaziabad, confirmed that the transport department has received details of repeat offenders and issued notices. "We have served notices to such repeat offenders and asked them to reply within two weeks," he said. Failing to do so will result in the suspension of a vehicle's registration and driving licence under MV Act sections 53 (suspension of registration) and 54 (cancellation of registration) and Section 19, read with Section 21, of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1986, he said. This year alone, between Jan 1 and July 31, police issued 764,742 challans to traffic violators. The most common offence was riding without helmets (3,28,588 challans), followed by wrong-side driving (1,24,842 challans).
