Movie Tea: 'James Bond' Franchise Finds New Director; Channing Tatum To Star In 'Roofman'

Hype Malaysia26-06-2025
Exciting cinematic projects are in the pipeline, and we've got the latest skinny on two exciting IPs.
From a now-legendary director teaming up with the world's favourite spy, to a highly-anticipated, based-on-true-events movie currently in development – here's the latest news on two major, upcoming films out of Hollywood.
Denis Villeneuve Set To Direct Next '007' Movie
Though he may be neck deep in the sand while gearing up for 'Dune: Messiah', Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve is actually diving into another project from another storied franchise — James Bond. That's right! Three years since the release of the latest spy installment, 'No Time to Die', the French-Canadian director is swapping the stillsuits for a two-piece one as he's set to spearhead the next entry in the 007 franchise.
As leaked by industry insider Matt Belloni in a newsletter, Villeneuve has been shortlisted as one of the candidates to direct the 26th Bond movie. But before that, he was joined by other would-be candidates such as Edward Berger (Conclave), Edgar Wright (Baby Driver), Paul King (Paddington), and Jonathan Nolan (Fallout). However, after a lengthy and messy change of hands on the producers' side, Amazon is ready to bring in the next era in MI6's legacy.
Being a well-established franchise, Villeneuve has openly admitted that this project is placing an enormous amount of pressure on him — an element intimately and comfortably familiar to him. In a statement during this surprise announcement, Villeneuve has explained that this franchise is 'sacred' to him, as he mentions that his 'earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007'.
'I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery,' said Villeneuve. 'I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.'
Unfortunately, he and all the spy fans have to wait a tad longer, as his planner is absolutely packed with other projects. Aside from 'Dune: Messiah', Villeneuve will be going down his list of backlogs, namely, 'Rendezvous With Rama', 'A Nuclear Scenario', and 'Cleopatra', so we can't immediately tell when filming will begin. Of course, the Bond 26 movie is taking its earliest step in its development life cycle; there's no script, no cast, and no actor for James Bond just yet. This gives us plenty of time to speculate and wait while the decorated director is tying up loose ends.
Channing Tatum To Play Escaped Convict In 'Roofman'
To say that the past year has been a great year for Hollywood star Channing Tatum would be a huge understatement. The actor went to the moon and back with 'Fly Me To The Moon', became a freshly-robbed billionaire in 'Blink Twice', and kicked some multiversal asses in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'.
But now, the 'Magic Mike' star is stepping away from the world of fiction and fantasy, as he is working on a project that is based on a true story. Directed by Derek Cianfrance, 'Roofman' follows the story of Jeffrey Manchester, a kind former soldier, who robbed McDonald's, was arrested, busted out of jail, and hid away in a Toys 'r Us for months while stealing toys for his new girlfriend's kid. It's as wild as it sounds, and you can catch a glimpse of it in the trailer above.
Known for his kind demeanour throughout his crime spree, Manchester's story is an exceptionally bizarre yet interesting tale, especially when it begins to unravel. That fact alone warrants an interesting retelling on the big screen, and who better to do it than Tatum? Though the story is based on a true story, we can expect the writers and the director to take some liberties with the source material; after all, you're more than welcome to read the Wikipedia article of the actual criminal if you don't mind the spoilers.
Rounding out the cast are Kirsten Dunst, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, and Peter Dinklage. 'Roofman' is set to hit theatres later this year.

'Tron: Ares' brings light cycles and Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, to Comic-Con

(Photo by Chris DELMAS/ AFP) The Grid took over Comic-Con on Friday, bringing the stars of the new Tron: Ares films to unveil footage and reveal the story behind the franchise's third movie. The film stars Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith as the story brings the virtual environment of the Grid, complete with light cylces, into the real world. Disney showed off several minutes of footage, including a light cycle chase scene in the real world and another in the red-hued Grid. Propelling the onscreen action is a propulsive Nine Inch Nails soundtrack. "It's fun to see it on the big screen for the first time,' said director Joachim Rønning. Disney turned the Hall H panel into a spectacle, with red lasers filling the room and characters in suits with red lights entering the massive hall. Asked what excited her about joining the Tron franchise, Lee responded: "I just wanted to ride a light cycle.' Leto spoke affectionately about the original saying: "This movie just grabbed a hold of me and took me to a place that I'd never been before. It kind of rattled my imagination and it kind of showed me what was possible in the world.' He praised Bridges and Steven Lisberger, who created Tron and directed the 1982 original. Lisberger attended Friday's panel and laid out his case for why the franchise remains relevant. "My feeling about Tron is that the most important thing is we kick this technology around artistically before it kicks us around,' Lisberger said. "I am weary about hearing all the grim news about the future,' he said, and the way he thinks it can be avoided is to "inspire young people what can be done with this technology.' Friday's panel ended with the premiere of the music video for As Alive as You Need Me to Be , the first Nine Inch Nails song from the soundtrack. Tron has never been in the top tier of sci-fi franchises. The original 1982 film starring Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a man sucked into a computer vortex known as the Grid, was admired for its ground-breaking concept and effects, and was a modest hit with moderately good reviews. Perhaps more importantly, it won a cult following and has been maintained enough in cultural memory to remain a valuable property for Disney. The 2010 film Tron: Legacy , starring Bridges and Garrett Hedlund, made more than US$400mil globally. A TV show that followed, Tron: Uprising , lasted just one season. Rønning has helmed other Disney franchise films: 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and 2019's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil . The Norweigan director said he was interested because he dreamed about making a sci-fi film and enjoyed the twist of Ares bringing the Grid into the real world. Leto and Bridges are both Oscar winners, and Rønning is an Oscar nominee. – AP

#SHOWBIZ: After Coldplay kiss-cam drama, Gwyneth Paltrow now 'face' for AI firm Astronomer

KUALA LUMPUR: US based AI startup Astronomer has enlisted Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow as its "very temporary" spokesperson, just a week after a viral kiss-cam scandal involving two of its top executives drew widespread attention. Paltrow, who is also the ex-wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, appeared in a one-minute video shared across the company's social media platforms, addressing the public on behalf of Astronomer's more than 300 employees. "I have been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300-plus employees at Astronomer. "Astronomer has gotten a lot of questions over the last few days, and they wanted me to answer the most common ones," she said in the video. The Hollywood star, however, steered clear of addressing the incident involving former CEO Andy Byron and HR chief Kristin Cabot, who were seen embracing on a kiss-cam during a Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on July 16. Both Byron and Cabot, who were reportedly married to other people at the time, have since stepped down from their roles. Instead, Paltrow focused her scripted message on Astronomer's core business — promoting its data workflow and AI automation services. "Yes, Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow, unifying the experience of running data, ML, and AI pipelines at scale. "We have been thrilled so many people have a newfound interest in data workflow automation." Responding to other queries — "How is your social media team holding up?" — Paltrow continued to avoid addressing the controversy directly, instead offering a wry smile before highlighting the company's upcoming Beyond Analytics event in September. "Yes, there is still room available at our Beyond Analytics event," she said. She closed the video by saying: "Thank you for your interest in Astronomer. We will now be going back to what we do best: delivering game-changing results to our customers." The unexpected celebrity cameo, delivered with Paltrow's trademark deadpan humour, appears to be part of Astronomer's effort to defuse the media frenzy and refocus attention on its business.

VIDEO: Gwyneth Paltrow hired by Astronomer to 'answer' questions after scandal

Gwyneth Paltrow married Chris Martin in 2003. The couple divorce in 2016. In a surprising turn of events, Astronomer has hired Gwyneth Paltrow to 'answer questions' from the Internet. Paltrow and Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin married in 2003 and divorced in 2016. This comes after the company's now former-CEO was mired in controversy after being seen at a Coldplay concert with the firm's HR head. The Oscar-winning Paltrow says in the video that she has been hired on a "very temporary" basis to answer common questions that people have been asking on the Internet. While the star doesn't actually answer any questions or address any real concerns that netizens may have conveyed earlier, the actor does redirect the conversation to the products that the firm already offers. Just last week, Astronomer's CEO Andy Byron put in his resignation, according to a statement issued by the tech company. Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot have since left Astronomer. Photo: TIkTok The company said on X, "As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met. "Andy Byron has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted. The Board will begin a search for our next Chief Executive as Cofounder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy continues to serve as interim CEO." The HR head Kristin Cabot, accused of having an affair with Byron, has reportedly left her job as well, according to TMZ. – Khaleej Times/Tribune News Service Thank you for your interest in Astronomer. — Astronomer (@astronomerio) July 25, 2025
