Iconic sweets return to UK shops 27 years after being axed
In 1998, Opal Fruits were axed and rebranded as Starburst, with the original confectionery only making a limited return twice.
The relaunch of the individually wrapped chewy sweets has prompted much excitement from fans after manufacturer Mars Wrigley told shoppers that the previous return would be the "final time".

According to The Sun, Florence McGivern, Skittles Senior Brand Manager, said: "Our new limited-edition Opal Fruits will be as iconic as it was in the 90s, giving fans the chance to revisit the strawberry, lemon, orange and lime flavours from decades ago.
"The nostalgia trend continues to resonate strongly with consumers, and we are giving them the chance to reconnect with memories from that time."
She added: "This limited edition follows successful runs in 2021 and 2024, and we are especially excited about this release as we continue to celebrate the rich heritage of an iconic brand."

Tesco has debased the honourable English sandwich
If you want one indication of the decline of Britain in 2025, it is the image that Tesco put out of their new, repellent 'birthday cake' sandwich, crowned with a single lonely candle. If you really despised someone, buying them one of these new sandwiches, which is essentially a Victoria sponge cake but in portable form, and offering it to them as a gift would be an effective way of indicating your disdain. However, for the rest of us, this unlovely marketing gimmick is yet another indication of how the honourable English sandwich, the office worker's traditional lunchtime snack, has been debased and made 'fun'. It is another reminder that the old adage that you should not play with your food is as relevant today as it has ever been. It is not difficult to see what possessed Tesco to come out with this new foodstuff. Marks and Spencer had a viral hit a few weeks ago with a bizarre but oddly successful strawberries and cream sandwich, or, in their parlance, a 'Red Diamond Strawberry and Crème sandwich'. It was unusual enough to become a star on TikTok, and for the first few days of its existence – coinciding with an unusually hot spell – it became sufficiently popular for shoppers to rush to branches of M&S early to be assured of buying their sweet treat. The website marketing now boasts that: It's light, luscious and bursting with classic strawberry-and-cream flavour – no wonder this must-try limited edition treat went viral. Never mind that it was a straightforward rip-off of the sweet Japanese fruit sando, which has been a mainstay in that country's bakeries for a while; it was sufficiently novel to have attracted attention and sales alike. Tesco's birthday cake sandwich, therefore, just looks like a rushed attempt at ripping off a competitor; something that we have come to expect from Aldi and Lidl, but less so from Britain's leading supermarket. And, in truth, it does not sound like something that many people would want to eat, even as a sweet treat. It contains a noxious amount of sugar (31 grams, to be exact) and constitutes nearly half of an adult's recommended intake of saturated fat. If it was the most delicious thing known to man, then such indulgence would be permissible, but it's ultimately a rather miserable-looking jam sandwich with cream and extra sparkles: yours for a mere £3. As with the M&S offering, it is a limited edition offering, designed to hit the shelves of a thousand supermarkets for four weeks and then to disappear off into the ether forever. Yet there will be similar horrible offerings, sweet and savoury alike, from both Tesco and its competitors. Everything from a bread-encased roast dinner sandwich to – naturally – the full English breakfast sandwich can be found on their shelves, ready to entice or repulse customers, depending on taste. The tragedy is that the vast majority of supermarket sandwiches taste horrible. The fillings are pumped full of artificial preservatives, the bread is either soggy or stale and the whole caboodle is as far from what the Earl of Sandwich imagined when he asked for his dinner to be brought to him between two slices of bread as can be possible. Yet because we are a society that is addicted both to the illusion of choice and endless novelty, there will be another viral-oriented horror in a few weeks, some other shotgun marriage between two wildly disparate kinds of food, and no doubt it, too, will sell in vast quantities. For those of us who hanker for something simple – ham and cheese, say – we should accept that such conservatism is out of kilter with the desire to put pictures of one's lunch on social media. Unfortunately, the latter urge is likely to win out, and that will be to our endless detriment.

Tesco to axe popular item from stores and shoppers don't have long left
Fans of the sweet treat don't have long left to give it a buy before it disappears Tesco shoppers only have a short amount of time left to try out a new sandwich that is dividing the nation. The new sugary concoction doesn't look like a traditional meal deal main - but it is certainly fit for a celebration. Available in over 1,000 Tesco stores nationwide, the supermarket's limited-edition sweet birthday cake sandwich surprised people grabbing a convenient meal deal this week. It features a strawberry jam and cream cheese filling, nestled between two slices of soft, sweet brioche, and topped off with a generous sprinkle of rainbow confetti. The creation was launched to mark 30 years since the introduction of the Tesco Clubcard scheme. The supermarket took over six months to bring the "ultimate nostalgic nod to childhood birthday parties" to life. A supermarket customer posted about the item when spotting it in their local Tesco store on Monday, August 4. Shopper Sasha Beeney posted a picture of the dessert-style sandwich to the Extreme Bargains and Couponing UK Facebook page, and within an hour, it was flooded with comments. Many people branded it "delicious" and were keen to give it a go as it continues to grow in popularity; however, while others wondered who was responsible for its creation. Since then, people have been sharing videos online, having located the sandwich in stores and tried it alongside a meal deal bundle (which costs £3.60 with a Clubcard). Violaine Barthe, brand manager at Tesco, said: 'With 3.1 million sandwiches sold in Tesco each year, sandwiches make up a big proportion of Clubcard purchases, and so there was only one way to celebrate Clubcard turning 30. The Birthday Cake sandwich is a celebration not to be missed, and we can't wait to hear the nation's feedback.' Tesco confirmed that the Birthday Cake Sandwich will be available from August 4 to 31, giving shoppers four weeks, or until stocks last, to try one. The distinctive purple packaging should stand out in the to-go section of the supermarket sandwiches. The Birthday Cake Sandwich isn't the first innovative sandwich to hit Tesco shelves. People were quick to compared the sweet treat to the viral M&S Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme Sandwich but Tesco claimed they were more than a decade early to the trend having brought out a version of their own in 2011. According to the British Baker, Tesco's £1 version of the Strawberries and Cream sandwich came out in 2011. At the time, it was explained that the sandwich contained British strawberries, Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam, served on white poppy seed bread. A Tesco meal deal costs £3.60 with a Clubcard or £4 without a Clubcard. According to Tesco, this price applies to the standard meal deal, which includes a sandwich (now including cake), wrap, pasta, or salad alongside a snack and a drink. At the time of the latest price hike, Tesco said the increase was partly due to recent enhancements to the quality of their meal deal range, including new salads and improved ingredients. A Tesco spokesperson stated that the meal deal remains a great value option for shoppers, especially for those with a Clubcard. The premium meal deal price (£5.50 or £5 with Clubcard) will remain unchanged. This enhanced offer includes a premium main including sushi or items from the Tesco Finest range of sandwiches, wraps and salads.
