Chicago Public Schools students return to class amid $734 million budget deficit
More than 300,000 Chicago Public Schools students are returning to the classroom on Monday to start the school year. The start of the school year comes as the district is facing a $734 million budget deficit. CPS leaders revealed their budget proposal on Wednesday. They said that it closes a $734 million deficit through a mix of cost-cutting and new revenue. The cuts include hundreds of teachers, lunchroom staff, and crossing guards, as well as 1,200 custodians. The budget includes money for academic programs, facility upgrades, and staff retention. On Monday, Mayor Brandon Johnson will visit Courtenay Elementary and Austin High School, which were newly designated as a sustainable community school under the CTU-CPS contract agreement. The mayor along with the CPS CEO and other leaders hope to highlight what they've spent months bargaining for smaller class sizes, more school libraries, more access to nurses and counselors, among other changes. They'll also continue to press state lawmakers to close that budget gap in the coming weeks. The Chicago school board has until the end of August to pass a balanced budget for the fiscal year, which started July 1. The board's final vote on the budget is expected on Aug. 28, which could stretch the standoff well into the start of the school year.
