BBC Antiques Roadshow guest left speechless at huge value of famous football photo

The Antiques Roadshow expert was left stunned by a guest's iconic photograph of Vinnie Jones during a 1988 Wimbledon vs Newcastle United match. A former guest on the Antiques Roadshow joked that he would have booked Vinnie Jones for "ungentlemanly conduct" after unveiling a unique football photograph. The BBC show was filming at Wollaton Hall with Raj Bisram when a member of the public brought a signed black and white photo of the football star when he played for Wimbledon. ‌ The image featured Vinnie grabbing the testicles of Newcastle United legend Paul Gascoigne during a 1988 match. "What an iconic photograph you've brought in," exclaimed expert Raj. ‌ The guest revealed on the BBC show: "I was the referee at that match. It was on my birthday, funnily enough. ‌ "And it was a first division match between Wimbledon and Newcastle United." He then confessed: "I have to admit, I did not see that incident." Bisram asked: "I mean, if you had seen that incident, obviously, you would have booked Vinnie Jones? For what?". The guest laughed and responded: "Well I suppose it would be for ungentlemanly conduct." He continued: "Monty Fresco of the Daily Mirror took that fantastic photograph. When I retired from work, my colleagues, unbeknown to me, got Jones and Gascoigne to sign it for me." In the left-hand corner, Jones simply wrote to the guest "Be good", while Gascoigne humorously wrote: "Thanks to you, I have lost my family allowance." Concluding the valuation, Bisram disclosed: "I guess if you were to put this on the market today, I would be estimating it would be for between £1,000 and £3,000." ‌ The guest was left speechless at the sum, as his jaw dropped at the eye-watering amount and he bit on his lip eagerly. Bisram continued: "I mean, it could go anywhere because it's a one-off. This is one of the most famous photographs of football in history. Thanks for bringing it in." Elsewhere recently on the show, an expert was thrilled by a "unique moment" as he disclosed the remarkable value of a family heirloom. BBC valuer Mark Smith was at Portchester Castle earlier this month when he met a couple curious about the significance of a grandfather's esteemed decorations. "This is a unique moment on the Antiques Roadshow," the expert declared. ‌ The expert continued: "In all the years I've been on the roadshow, we have never had a Victoria Cross. The highest award for gallantry this country has. Who was this man?". The husband shared: "This was my wife's grandfather. Unfortunately, I wasn't privileged enough to meet him but my wife knew him when she was a young child". ‌ The expert disclosed that the medals were estimated at an astonishing £250,000 to £300,000. Both were visibly shocked before dissolving into laughter, with her whispering: "Golly. I didn't think it would be that much", the gentleman admitted, to which Smith replied: "Easily." The visitor joked: "I need a stiff cup of coffee." His wife commented: "I'm a bit like my husband - shocked. I didn't expect that at all." The husband stated his intention to return the medals to the bank for safekeeping in their security deposit box. "I think that's probably wise. That day, he deserved that," Smith concluded.

Sharing a snap of himself holding a camera at sunset, Tony shared: 'Heading off into the sunset. Some personal news. After 29 years, today is my last day at BBC News. 'It's been amazing but the offer of redundancy was too good to turn down - and it felt like a good time to try something new. Not sure what comes next - watch this space.' Following his announcement, fans flocked to the comment section to wish the star well on his future endeavours. One user wrote: 'Sorry to hear that, but I expect you will have fun on the other side!' Another stated: 'All the very best Tony for whatever comes next.' While someone else added: 'All the very best Tony, have a ball!' In 1997, Tony began his career at the BBC as a journalist working for the news channel. He also took home the prestigious Home News Award at the Royal Television Society for his story on racism in Northern Ireland. Tony also covered huge global events such as Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic following his promotion to Senior Broadcast Journalist in 2010. Tony is following in the footsteps of Jordan North, Clara Amfo, and news presenter Mishal Husain, who all departed the corporation last year. In February last year, Jordan, 35, stepped down from his Radio 1 show after a decade to reportedly replace Roman Kemp as the Capital Breakfast host. Following Jordan's huge announcement, it was revealed at the time that Jamie Laing, 35, would take his place - Monday to Thursday, 3.30pm to 6pm - next to radio co-host Vick Hope. Thankful for all the support from his listeners, Jordan – who also hosts the Help I Sexted My Boss podcast – took to Instagram to thank his 834,000 followers for their positive reaction. Sharing an album of throwback snaps of his time at the station, Jordan captioned his update: 'Hello everyone. 'I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all my wonderful colleagues / talented producers at Radio 1 who many I consider to be friends for life and will miss greatly, you've all reached out to me over the past 24 hours and it really has meant a lot. 'To my amazing fellow presenters I wish I could thank you all personally, I've loved working with you it's been an absolute blast! Big love to Katie Thisleton, Greg James, Arielle Free, Ricky, Melvin & Charlie, Dean & Vicky, Clara Amfo, Matt & Molly, Scott Mills, Grimmy, all the rest of you fantastic lot, and of course my partner in crime Vick Hope…I'll miss being on air with you every day. 'MOST IMPORTANTLY the biggest of thank yous to the fantastic listeners who have been really generous and always made me feel welcome, your kind words & messages have been so lovely, THANK YOU SO MUCH. Thankful for all the support from his listeners, Jordan – who also hosts the Help I Sexted My Boss podcast – took to Instagram to thank his 834,000 followers for their positive reaction 'I'll be back soon, and can't wait to see you all again.' But not all fans were left happy after the announcement, as some fled to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their upset. One penned: 'Why do the good ones always leave?' 'Really hope this was your decision @jordannorth1 and that it means bigger things for you - we love you and will miss you v much xx.' He now co-hosts the Capital Breakfast show on Capital FM alongside Chris Stark and Sian Welby.

Lady Iman leads 17-strong Nunthorpe field

Ger Lyon's youngster has dazzled throughout the current campaign and was supplemented at a cost of £40,000 after advertising her claims in the Molecomb at Goodwood last time. She is joined in a mouthwatering feature on day three of the Ebor Festival by a stellar cast of sprinting talent, with fellow Irish raiders including Adrian Murray's Sapphire Stakes scorer Arizona Blaze and Jack Davison's ultra-consistent stable star She's Quality. 'She was cantering all over the back of them at the two and I ended up getting there too early' Nunthorpe next for LADY IMAN following her easy win in the G3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood #Starman — Tally-Ho Stud (@HoStud) July 30, 2025 Australian ace Asfoora will continue her European odyssey and attempt to better last year's fourth in this race for trainer Henry Dwyer, while Washington Heights was sixth 12 months ago and is one of two in the race for Kevin Ryan alongside Ain't Nobody. Ed Walker is another handler with two in the mix as he saddles both Mgheera and last year's Lowther Stakes winner Celandine, with John and Sean Quinn putting their faith in King George Stakes winner Jm Jungle to continue his progress through the ranks at a track he knows well. Fellow course winner Sayidah Dariyan returns to the Knavesmire looking to give Richard Hughes a first win as a trainer in a race he twice conquered as a jockey, while other notable names include Michael Bell's two-year-old Spicy Marg and Jonathan Portman's Rumstar, who like Lady Iman have been supplemented into the contest. In the supporting Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup Stakes, John and Thady Gosden's emphatic Gold Cup winner Trawlerman is the standout name in a field of six that also includes stablemate and standing dish of the staying division Sweet William. Karl Burke's Al Qareem brings strong course form to the table, while Tom Clover's Al Nayyir was beaten a short head in this last year and returns to correct the record after a similar narrow defeat at Sandown last time. A field of eight will line-up for the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes where Walker's Do Or Do Not has the chance for a first victory at Group level.
