Ransom Canyon star Minka Kelly reveals she has thought about leaving Hollywood 'many times' for a less than glamorous 'backup profession'

Daily Mail23-04-2025

Minka Kelly has opened up about how she considered leaving acting 'many times' for her 'backup profession' - which is a far cry from the glitz and glam of Hollywood.
The actress, 44, told how she is considering returning to her 'backup' career as an operating room scrub nurse because it continues to give her 'a bit of confidence'.
The Friday Night Lights star, who is dating singer-songwriter Dan Reynolds, discussed the option during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends show with guest co-host Andy Cohen on Tuesday.
During the interview, Andy asked: 'Is it true that you thought Hollywood was over you?', to which Minka said she had considered 'many times'.
She said: 'I think after any job finishes If any amount of time passes, you're like, "Okay, this is it. I had a good run. And that's okay, everything's okay. I have my backup. I can be a scrub tech again".
When asked if she thought about going back to being a scrub tech in the OR (operating room), Minka said: 'I think of it all the time. I think it's something that gives me a bit of confidence...'

Referring to the entertainment industry, she said: 'You know this isn't the whole world. So the rejection that you get being an actor is sort of balanced out for me and you can go, "But I'm good at this. I know I'm good at this".
Speaking about her experience of being a nurse, she said: 'I loved it so much. It's really good to feel like you're good at something.'
Minka's latest project is Netflix series Ransom Canyon - which has been dubbed as the next Yellowstone.
The series debuted on the streaming platform on April 17 but the reviews that are pouring in are so far mixed.
'Love, loss, and loyalty collide when three ranching family dynasties fight for control of the land. Their lives and legacies are threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life,' Netflix's synopsis read.
Reviewers seemed to dislike the drama more than viewers with headlines calling it 'a try-hard Western' that is a 'far cry from Yellowstone,' and 'goes down easy but leaves a weird after taste.'
The soapy series also stars Josh Duhamel, James Brolin, Eoin Macken, Lizzy Greene, Andrew Liner, Marianly Tejada, Garrett Wareing and Jack Schumacher.
USA Today gave the series one and a half stars out of four as it said, 'Peek underneath the jean jackets and cowboy hats and you'll find there's very little substance to Canyon.'
AV Club said, 'The show's ten episodes are engineered for maximum escapism and bingeability.'
Both Duhamel and Kelly have compared their western soap to food.
The Win a Date with Tad Hamilton star, called it 'comfort food,' while the Friday Night Lights actress called it 'gooey chocolate cake.'
And while many reviews compared Ransom Canyon to Yellowstone and its spin-offs, that wasn't quite on the mark.
Netflix was looking to capitalize on the success they've had with romantic dramas Virgin and Sweet Magnolias, this time with some western flair.
The series is adapted from the series of books by Jodi Thomas and created by Wednesday writer April Blair. Set in the fictional town of Ransom Canyon, Variety called it 'horny, absurd, and ridiculously entertaining' and 'a sexy, predictable, breezy viewing experience that delivers on its promises.'
The Hollywood Reporter called the series, 'featureless and formulaic, happy to borrow just a fraction of your attention while you mostly focus on other things.'
Another thing that isn't sitting well with reviewers is the entirely white cast that focuses on several love triangles and an as-thus unrequited love between Duhamel's Staten and Kelly's Quinn.
Quinn is not only the owner of the only bar in town, she's also Staten's late wife's best friend.
Staten is hauling around a heap of grief having lost his wife and only son in the not too recent past.
Over on X, (formerly Twitter), viewers, who've had 12 ish hours to see the series are more positive about it.
Users of that social media platform shared pics of the various couples on the show and commented about the heat and the tension.
Several of the reviews called Ransom Canyon, background TV, but they clearly didn't check with its intended audience.
One fan wrote, 'they rly gaslit me in the trailer bc why'd i think that scene of quinn and davis laying by the fireplace was quinn and stanten.'
Davis Collins is played by Eoin Macken and he comes with almost as much baggage as Staten does.
Davis is a thrice-divorced single father who is basically a grifter who knows how to turn on the charm to entice Quinn.
Another viewer, wrote: 'He as the cowboy who lost his wife and son and she as the hidden artist who was a friend of his late wife. me: I LOVE THE DRAMA.'
Someone else compared it to Netflix's Virgin River, ' If Yellowstone was made by Hallmark, you'd get Ransom Canyon — all the ranch drama, none of the grit. If you're into Virgin River vibes, this one's your next binge.'
And for one Minka Kelly fan, they are just grateful she's back on screen to watch.
'Minka Kelly back on my screen in Ransom Canyon is the small-town drama serotonin I needed. Ranch life, secrets, and Minka? Say less.'

Netflix fans rush to binge Italian crime thriller with John Wick star

Netflix viewers are racing through all six episodes of the gritty new Italian thriller, Sara: Woman In The Shadows. The recently added show, directed by Carmine Elia, stars Teresa Saponangelo and Claudia Gerini, the latter of whom is known for playing Gianna D'Antonio in John Wick: Chapter 2. 'The suspicious death of her son pushes a former secret agent [the titular Sara played by Teresa] back into action, investigating a series of crimes that grow increasingly sinister,' the synopsis of the series, based on the crime novel series by Maurizio de Giovanni, reads. Sara's last job dubbed her 'the invisible woman' for her immaculate skill set and ability to lip-read and she brings her all to this latest mystery – to uncover what happened to her son. The description concludes: 'While discovering details of her son's life that she knew almost nothing about, Sara sinks into an investigation that brings her back to many ghosts of her past. 'Keeping both of these things together is very difficult, and certainly very dangerous. Paradoxically however, this is how the invisible woman comes back to life, doing what she does best.' In the show Claudia's character, Teresa, teams up with Sara to help with her investigation and they are also joined by police officer Pardo (Flavio Furno) and photographer Viola (Chiara Celotto). Its premise has clearly hooked in fans with the show easily climbing the charts to land at number seven in TV shows on Netflix. One Reddit user, Roshankr1994, called it a 'gritty thriller and an intriguing watch.' 'The ending of 'Sara – Woman in the Shadows' leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. The twist is both shocking and brilliantly executed, tying up loose ends while leaving room for reflection on Sara's journey. A must-watch for crime drama enthusiasts!' TheAnchorAgent wrote on X. Ready Steady Cut added: 'This is six dense episodes of grounded and compelling procedural spycraft enhanced by an unconventional lead and a willingness to meet its underlying themes and ideas halfway.' Netflix has a strong record of platforming compelling foreign-language thrillers, including the Swedish show The Are Murders, South African drama Unseen and Korean series Karma – to name a few. Gerini has enjoyed a lucrative career with over 100 roles across TV and film and in 2023, reflected on the ongoing legacy of her John Wick character. 'That was a very interesting shoot. We shot in Rome and I really like Chad, and of course Keanu Reeves. More Trending 'I took that role with an audition as a self tape and I was so proud of myself because when you do a self tape you never know how it's going to be. And the director said, 'oh my God, you really impressed me. 'I really like this character, this strong woman, yet fragile. You always have to play against the main characteristic of the role. Sometimes that's what I do. 'I like to play, yes, a strong woman, but with the courage to take her own life. Go out on her terms. To not be killed by John Wick,' she told The HollywoodNews at the time. View More » Sara: Woman In The Shadows is available to stream now. Got a story? Paul Hollywood admits friends won't bake for him after tearful cake incident

Paul Hollywood has recalled a baking horror story in which a friend became tearful after he judged one of their bakes. Appearing on Wednesday's (4 June) episode of The One Show, the Great British Bake Off judge told an anecdote about a companion who, after baking their own birthday cake, wanted his opinion. Hollywood revealed that he didn't hold back, offering up a similar level of criticism he might give a contestant on the Channel 4 show — but this was at the friend's insistence. "Do it like you do on Bake Off," Hollywood said the friend told him.

Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins on ‘ridiculous' feud rumours

The third series sees the positive Chelsea, played by British actress Wood, 31, try to keep her mysterious older boyfriend, Rick, played by 53-year-old US actor Goggins, calm in Thailand. Walton Goggins. (Ian West/PA) Following the 2025 series, Goggins appeared to step away from his fellow co-stars, and unfollow Greater Manchester-born Wood on Instagram. They both addressed the swirling rumours during a joint interview for US publication Variety, which was published on Wednesday. Goggins said: 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman (Aimee) madly, and she is so important to me.' He added that 'she's special', and explained he had not addressed the reports before as he did not want to talk about Wood when she was not there. 'I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a shite about Instagram,' Wood said. Goggins said that when he finished The White Lotus he 'needed to just back away from everyone', as it is his 'process' when filming a project ends. 'It's all so ridiculous,' he said. 'It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for f****** ever.' Wood previously criticised a Saturday Night Live sketch, with an cast member impersonating her with exaggerated prosthetic teeth, calling it 'mean and unfunny' on Instagram. She told Variety that it 'felt misogynistic. It felt like the punchline was a woman's appearance, which is just not funny. It's not cool'. Goggins shared the same sketch online and praised Jon Hamm for playing a version of his character, before deleting the Instagram post, ahead of hosting SNL> He said he was 'gonna say it (something) to your face', and added: 'I don't use social media in any way, and I'm not a mean guy.' SNL apologised for the April sketch, according to Wood, and the comedian and cast member who impersonated her, Sarah Sherman, sent her flowers to apologise. Wood is also known for Netflix teen show Sex Education, BBC comedy Daddy Issues and the 2022 drama film Living with Bill Nighy. Goggins has been in Western series Justified, post-apocalyptic series Fallout, and drama Sons Of Anarchy. He has had two Emmy nods, while Wood has won a TV Bafta for Sex Education and been given a Rising Star Bafta nomination.
