No fee hike for nursing courses this year: Karnataka government
Karnataka Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharanaprakash Patil made this clear during a meeting with the Association of Nursing Colleges held at Vikasa Soudha on Thursday.
'The government will not allow any fee increase. Most nursing students come from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Imposing additional fees is unjust and unacceptable,' Patil said while firmly rejecting the association's plea to raise the fees.
He stated that the existing fee structure - Rs 10,000 under the government quota, Rs 1 lakh under the management quota and Rs 1.4 lakh for non-Karnataka students - will continue.
'Any college charging more than the approved fee will face penalties and legal action. We will not hesitate to revoke their affiliation,' he asserted.
Currently, there are 611 nursing colleges in the state with around 35,000 seats. Of these, 80 per cent are filled by the management, and 20 per cent fall under the government quota.
The minister also directed Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) Director H Prasanna to ensure reimbursement of fees to nursing colleges within 30 days.
He further clarified that only the state government will decide on filling unallocated seats, closing the door to any unauthorised changes.
In a major boost to India's innovation and skilling ecosystem, Patil today inaugurated the Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE), a first-of-its-kind national initiative aimed at advancing research, innovation and capacity building in next-generation technologies.
The TCOE, established under a collaborative framework between Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and the Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF), follows a Hub-and-Spoke model to drive impact at scale. The launch event was held at VTU's Bengaluru Regional Office in the presence of Union Minister for Communications and development of North Eastern region, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, and VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vidyashankar S.
'This national-level Centre is poised to become a catalyst for advanced R&D, next-generation skilling, and industry-integrated innovation,' Patil said.
The Centre will focus on cutting-edge domains such as 5G/6G communication, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), quantum computing, healthcare technology, and other frontier areas.
Operating from its central Hub at VTU's Bengaluru campus, the TCOE will coordinate with 30+ affiliated spoke institutions across Karnataka to promote region-specific research, build advanced infrastructure, and nurture local innovation ecosystems. (ANI)

Cheaper cancer care therapy earns big bucks for pharma company
India's cell and gene therapy pioneer ImmunoAct has turned profitable in its first full year of operations, a rare feat in the country's emerging startup landscape where research-based pharma enterprises encounter serious scale and cash flow challenges. ImmunoACT, in which Hyderabad-based drugmaker Laurus Labs has roughly 34% equity stake, saw revenues of ₹62 crore with a profit before tax of ₹12 crore in FY25, according to sources. The year before, ImmunoAct had revenues of ₹11 crore. Founded by immunologist Rahul Purwar in 2013, ImmunoACT was spun off from the department of bioengineering department of IIT Bombay in 2018. ImmunoACT's NexCAR19 is the first indigenously developed breakthrough cancer CAR-T (chimeric antigen receptor T-cell) therapy approved by India's central drug regulatory agency in October 2023. NexCAR19 was formally launched in India in April 2024 at a price ~90% cheaper than its US and European counterparts like Novartis and Gilead, making it far more affordable for India and low-and-middle income countries, on its potential approval. So far, the therapy has been infused in over 350 patients across 70 hospitals in India. In CAR-T treatment, the patient's immune cells are extracted and through a maze of re-engineering processes infused back to recognize and kill cancer cells, giving a longer remission to patients as compared to the conventional options like immunotherapy or bone marrow transplants. The therapy is used when all other options are CAR-T dose (one-and-done infusion) costs around ₹30 lakh, which was initially priced at ₹42 lakh, and is expected to see a further decline as demand picks ImmunoACT has recently appointed former managing director of Roche India V Simpson Immanuel as its strategic Purwar added, "We needed someone who understands not just the commercial landscape, but also the nuances of innovation, patient access, and global expansion." Earlier this year, Immuneel Therapeutics, backed by leading names like Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and globally renowned oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee secured approval for Qartemi, its cell therapy for adult B-cell non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, in India. Companies like Cipla, Dr Reddy's Labs and Bharat Biotech are investing heavily in new CAR-Ts. Globally, CAR-Ts are at the frontiers of a range of cancer treatments, attracting billions of dollars in investments from large drugmakers. The market for such therapies is expected to touch $134 billion by 2034 from around $10 billion at present.

The Silent Epidemic: Why Fatty Liver Is Becoming Increasingly Common In Young Adults
Last Updated: Once considered a condition affecting middle-aged, older individuals, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is now increasingly diagnosed in people as young as their early 20s Fatty liver disease, particularly Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), is quietly emerging as a major health concern among young adults in India. Once considered a condition affecting middle-aged and older individuals, NAFLD is now increasingly diagnosed in people as young as their early 20s. Lifestyle changes, rising obesity, and dietary habits are among the key drivers of what experts are now calling a 'silent epidemic." A Modern Lifestyle Problem At the core of this alarming trend is the modern sedentary lifestyle. Long hours of sitting—whether at desks, in front of screens, or during commutes—combined with a lack of physical activity disrupt normal metabolism and promote fat accumulation in the liver. What's more concerning is that even individuals who appear slim or fall within normal BMI ranges may be at risk due to what's now termed 'lean NAFLD," where visceral fat affects internal organs without visibly increasing body weight. Unhealthy eating habits are another major contributor. 'The easy availability and frequent consumption of processed, high-sugar, and high-fat foods, especially among college students and young professionals, is drastically impacting liver health. Add to that sugary drinks and late-night eating habits, and the liver is constantly under assault," explains Mool Meena, Founder & CEO, Sheopals. What makes fatty liver especially dangerous is its potential to act as a gateway to more serious conditions. NAFLD increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and liver cancer. In some cases, it may lead to liver failure, requiring transplantation. Prevention Through Lifestyle and Ayurveda The good news is that fatty liver is largely reversible, especially in its early stages. A multi-pronged approach involving a healthy diet, regular exercise, weight management, stress reduction, and routine health checkups can make a significant difference. Nutritionists recommend a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, while avoiding saturated fats and refined sugars. Exercise, including strength training and cardio, for at least 150 minutes a week, is critical. Losing just 5–10% of body weight can substantially reduce liver fat and inflammation. Complementing lifestyle changes, traditional herbs are also gaining recognition for their hepatoprotective properties. Herbs like Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa), Bhumi Amla (Phyllanthus niruri), Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Bhringraj (Eclipta alba), and Makoi (Solanum nigrum) have been used in Ayurveda to help repair liver cells, detoxify the liver, and protect against chemical damage. 'Scientific interest in these herbs is growing, as they offer a natural adjunct to lifestyle management for fatty liver. They support liver function, reduce oxidative stress, and aid in the body's natural detoxification processes," says Dr. Mandeep Sahanpal,BAMS, BLSLLB. A Call to Action As NAFLD becomes more prevalent among India's younger population, it's crucial to increase awareness, promote early screening, and adopt proactive lifestyle habits. Combining the best of modern medicine with time-tested traditional knowledge can help reverse the tide of this silent epidemic and protect the health of an entire generation. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
