Mob Entertainment Emerges as Global Force with Expanding Franchise and Bold Growth Strategy
Mob Entertainment may have started as an indie studio with modest roots, but it's quickly becoming one of the most dynamic players in global media. Best known for the breakout horror game Poppy Playtime, the company has evolved into a vertically integrated transmedia powerhouse—scaling its intellectual property across platforms, markets, and consumer touchpoints with remarkable speed.
Founded by brothers Zach and Seth Belanger in 2015, Mob Entertainment is redefining what it means to build modern entertainment IP. Through a smart blend of gaming, consumer products, international licensing, and narrative storytelling, Mob has built a brand that thrives both digitally and physically.
The results speak volumes. In 2024, Mob saw a 176% year-over-year increase in its global player base and a dramatic 590% surge in direct-to-consumer merchandise sales—clear signals of a growing and highly engaged international audience.
"We've always believed in the power of immersive storytelling," says Zach Belanger, CEO and co-founder. "Whether it's through games, characters, or physical products, we're focused on building universes that connect with fans everywhere."
A Franchise That Transcends Platforms
Poppy Playtime first captured audiences with its unique blend of puzzle mechanics and unsettling toy-factory horror. Characters like Huggy Wuggy and Catnap became breakout stars, fueling a viral wave across platforms like YouTube and TikTok and extending the brand's reach far beyond the screen.
Originally launched on PC, the game has expanded to Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and the Epic Games Store. It recently received the Xbox Excellence Award for Store Rating, recognizing the franchise's strong community reception and sustained engagement.
Mob has also capitalized on its momentum through a growing direct-to-consumer business and international retail partnerships. Its branded storefront, PoppyPlaytime.com, anchors global availability, with distribution through major retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, Target, Hot Topic, and Toys "R" Us Japan.
The January 2025 release of Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4 – Safe Haven marked a high point for the brand's narrative ambitions, cementing the game's place in the evolving horror genre while continuing to drive fan investment across channels.
Talent-Driven Growth
Mob's strategic evolution has included recently expanding its leadership bench with key hires who bring deep industry experience and global perspective.
George Krstic, now Senior Director of Creative Development for Film & Games, brings an award-winning résumé that includes Star Wars: The Clone Wars, League of Legends, Transformers, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft. His expertise in worldbuilding and narrative expansion is expected to propel Mob's IP into film and serialized storytelling.
Andrew Lobel, a screenwriter and gaming narrative expert, joins as Narrative Director following the success of his horror film Immaculate at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival. His work on PUBG—one of the best-selling video games of all time—adds further depth to Mob's transmedia ambitions.
Liesa Dornan, Head of International Licensing, brings years of global licensing and brand strategy experience from roles at Marvel, Disney, and Universal Brand Development. She's now steering Mob's licensing and retail footprint into new markets and categories.
"These additions reflect the kind of brand we're building," says Belanger. "We're not just expanding a game—we're investing in the talent needed to build lasting, globally relevant entertainment properties."
A Blueprint for Modern IP
Mob's strength lies in its ability to operate across verticals with cohesion. The company's expanding ecosystem includes new partnerships with Legendary Entertainment, Scholastic, Jazwares, and Maximum Entertainment, with licensed products spanning toys, apparel, publishing, board games, and even augmented reality.
With a forecasted 40% year-over-year increase in e-commerce revenue for 2025, Mob is doubling down on its direct-to-consumer approach while continuing to expand globally through retail and licensing channels.
"Our focus is on long-term IP development," says Belanger. "That means deepening the fan connection across formats—from games to merchandise to stories—and ensuring everything we create feels meaningful and immersive."
Poised for Global Impact
Mob Entertainment's trajectory underscores a broader shift in how franchises are built and scaled in today's entertainment landscape. By combining grassroots creativity with disciplined business execution, the Belanger brothers have created a brand that competes on a global stage.
With broad partnerships, a passionate fan base, and a clear creative vision, Mob is setting the stage for broader expansion across film, publishing, and interactive media—reaching audiences not just where they play, but where they watch, shop, and imagine.

Not all heroes wear capes: Elephant goes viral for saving drowning gazelle at Guatemala zoo
An elephant is seen pulling a gazelle out of a pond inside a Guatemala zoo. PHOTO: SCREENGRAB FROM VIRALHOG/YOUTUBE Not all heroes wear capes: Elephant goes viral for saving drowning gazelle at Guatemala zoo Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes, they have really big ears and long snouts. An elephant was recently filmed saving a gazelle that appeared to be drowning in a pond inside an enclosure at a zoo in Guatemala. The clip, which first appeared online on June 9, has gone viral, with over 1.5 million likes on TikTok and over 8 million views on one Facebook account. It shows an adult elephant trying to fish a young gazelle out of a pond. It is not clear how the gazelle found itself in this predicament. But it could be seen struggling to keep its head out of the water while trying to climb out of the pond surrounded by a high concrete mound. Using its long and flexible trunk, the elephant is seen grabbing the gazelle's horn and trying to winch it out of the water. Even though it loses its grip on its first attempt, it does not give up. Going in for a second try, it manages to get a firmer grip of the gazelle's horn and, with a mighty tug, pulls it out of the water. Some of the other gazelles look on, but seem unimpressed by their neighbour's heroics. Visitors to the zoo watching it from afar, however, can be heard cheering in the video. The elephant is then seen walking towards the rescued gazelle, seemingly to check on its condition. While it may have been just another day for the elephant, videos of its heroic act have made it the internet's star of the moment. Some netizens have also made inevitable comparisons to bipedal bad behaviour. 'Better than some humans,' said Ms Judy Tyler, on the Furry Tails Facebook page. 'Meanwhile, humans killing each other,' Mr Hadjer Bouzid chimed in on the same thread. Others were in awe of the elephant's sense of empathy and intelligence. 'This just shows how intelligent elephants are, what a hero,' said Ms Johan Kievit, also on the Furry Tails Facebook page. Ms Emily Brown added: 'I love how the elephant knows to pick him up by the horns.' 'And the elephant goes over to check, 'You doing okay, bud?',' Mr Eduek Moses added. Some animals have been known to naturally exhibit heroic traits. In June 2024, a dog ran nearly 7km to get help after his owner's truck plummeted into a ravine. Another dog saved a whole family by barking loudly to wake them up when the houseboat they were in caught fire. Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Beijing woos US influencers with free trip to show ‘real China'
China seeks to enlist young social media influencers from the US to collaborate with its local content creators. PHOTO: AFP China is inviting American influencers to join a 10-day, all-expense paid trip through the country in July , as part of Beijing's efforts to boost people-to-people exchanges and showcase the 'real China'. The initiative, titled 'China-Global Youth Influencer Exchange Programme', seeks to enlist young social media influencers with at least 300,000 followers to collaborate with Chinese content creators, according to recruitment posts by Chinese state-affiliated media outlets, including the China Youth Daily. While relations between China and the US have deteriorated in recent months over issues including geopolitics, technology and trade, the programme marks an effort to boost cultural exchanges. In 2024 , President Xi Jinping had called for more exchanges between Chinese and American universities, after previously announcing a plan to welcome 50,000 American students to China. Another post in College Daily, a publication particularly targeting Chinese students in North America, specified that applicants for the exchange programme based in the US should be active on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and X, and should 'love Chinese culture' and 'have no history of bad behaviours'. It called on Chinese students overseas to encourage influencers in their circle to apply, and said the successful candidates will get China's official invite as well as special assistance from the state to process their visas. The trip intends to take the participants across five Chinese cities – Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Handan and Beijing, and will cover China's e-commerce hubs, the headquarter of companies such as Xiaohongshu Technology Co and BYD Co. The influencers will also partake in cultural activities such as Taichi and be able to live-stream their trip to the Great Wall, according to the posts. Working with Chinese social media influencers on ideas, and getting their content promoted by China's state media will be part of the deal. Social media content from Western influencers travelling through China post-Covid-19 have won praise from the state media for their authentic portrayal of everyday life in the country. In April, American streamer IShowSpeed's visit to China sparked widespread curiosity among fans about advancements in Chinese technology. The authorities have tapped social media influencers to check negative information and promote positive contents. In 2023, think-tank Australian Strategic Policy Institute analysed over 120 foreign influencers, mostly active on Chinese social media, received the state's help to grow their influence in return for content that praises and spreads Beijing's narrative.
