Assam: 132 persons apprehended for alleged illegal cattle slaughter, unauthorised sale of beef
A total of 112 eateries were searched during the day and 1,084 kg of meat, which the police suspect is beef, was seized, Assam Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh told Scroll.
While consumption of beef is not illegal in the state, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, bans its slaughter and sale in areas predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities or in areas that fall within a 5 km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery), or other religious institutions belonging to Hindu religion or any other institution or area as 'may be prescribed by the competent authority'. It also places tight restrictions on cattle transportation.
On Tuesday, a suo-motu drive was initiated in the state to check reported incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and sale of beef in restaurants without authorisation, PTI quoted Kumar as saying.
'The main intention of the drive is to stop violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act,' Kumar told the news agency.
In December, public consumption of beef, including at restaurants and community gatherings, was banned by the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state. A legislation or legislative amendment to this end has not been passed yet.
The crackdown on Tuesday came against the backdrop of more than 150 persons being arrested in Dhubri after animal remains alleged to be of a cow were recovered near a Hindu temple, The Indian Express reported.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) accused the Congress of making 'baseless' claims about 'vote theft' and targeting the Election Commission of India in 'collusion' with a Delhi-based think tank. This came after Sanjay Kumar, a psephologist and a professor with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), who had shared voter data from two Maharashtra Assembly seats related to last year's State election in a post on X on Sunday (August 17, 2025), subsequently deleted his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), apologising for posting erroneous data. The post had claimed a significant decrease in voter numbers in two Assembly seats in the State election compared to the 2024 general election, which was held nearly six months earlier. 'Fake data' Reacting sharply, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia lashed out at Mr. Kumar for posting 'false data' which he claimed was used by the Opposition to target the EC, calling it a 'dangerous game'. 'This survey organisation [CSDS] is nothing but a puppet at the hands of leaders like Rahul Gandhi who could not win people's trust. He needs such an organisation which can provide fake data and facts so that he can make baseless allegations,' Mr. Bhatia said. 'Congress leader Pawan Khera tweets on this and then deletes. Rahul Gandhi's baseless allegations are also based on CSDS data,' he added. Deleting his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), Mr. Kumar wrote on X, 'I sincerely apologise for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. An error occurred while comparing the data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in the row was misread by our Data team.' The erroneous tweet has since been removed, he said, adding, 'I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.'

Jain Samiti warns protest over false propaganda against Dharmasthala
Mangaluru: The Jain Dharma Hita Rakshana Samiti, Jaina Kashi, Moodbidri, has warned that the forum will launch a massive protest if the govt fails to initiate action against those who are allegedly spreading lies against Dharmasthala and its leaders on social media. The Samiti leader and former minister, K Abhayachandra Jain, and other members stated that the peace-loving community will stand united to fight if such instances are repeated. In an open letter to the Karnataka chief secretary, through the tahsildar of Moodbidri on Tuesday, Jain leaders stated that Dharmasthala is a revered religious centre. "The development activities at Dharmasthala have contributed immensely to the overall welfare of the locals. The leaders who dedicated their life to society's welfare, was honoured by Karnataka govt, and the govt of India bestowed the second highest civilian award as well. We are also proud that the leader was given an opportunity to represent Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha," the Samiti noted. Anti-social elements, who are not able to digest the growth of such a towering personality, have engaged in smear campaigns on social media and thereby tried to create unrest in the society, they alleged. Those with a criminal background, who are engaged in levelling false propaganda, should be dealt with under stringent laws, the Samiti urged. Sreenivasan murder case: HC grants bail to four PFI members
The Kerala High Court has granted bail to four members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) who had been arraigned as accused in the murder of RSS leader Sreenivasan of Palakkad in 2022. A Division Bench of Justice V. Raja Vijayaraghavan and Justice K.V. Jayakumar granted them bail while hearing their plea challenging the dismissal of their bail applications by the NIA Special Court, Ernakulam. Muhammed Bilal, Riyasudheen, K.P. Ansar, and K.V. Saheer, who were granted bail, had been arraigned as among the accused in the case. They had been charged with participating in a conspiracy, conducting reconnaissance along with the other accused, and playing a prominent role in facilitating the murder. They contended that, though the incident was a 'political murder', the NIA deliberately gave it a communal colour by deleting the name of the political party from the final report, replacing it with 'a Hindu leader,' and incorporating provisions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The NIA deposed before the court that the investigation had revealed that the PFI had a hidden agenda to overthrow democracy in India and to establish Islamic rule by 2047. The court said that the final report filed by the NIA was voluminous, consisting of 1,688 documents, 1,114 witnesses, 696 material objects, and 10 terabytes of forensic reports. Given the magnitude of the prosecution case and the stay on proceedings issued by the Supreme Court, specifically interdicting the framing of charges, there is no foreseeable possibility of the trial commencing or concluding in the near future. Out of the total 66 accused in the case, 49 had already been enlarged on bail either by the High Court or the Supreme Court, and only 12 remained in custody. The court granted bail to the four accused since the accused persons facing almost similar charges had already been released.
