Jason Momoa and Andrew Koji in talks to star in live-action Street Fighter movie

Perth Now22-05-2025
Jason Momoa and Andrew Koji are in negotiations to star in Legendary's live-action 'Street Fighter' movie.
The 45-year-old actor and the 'Bullet Train' star, 37, are in talks to lead the live-action film adaptation of Capcom's iconic video game franchise of the same name, Deadline reports.
Noah Centineo and Roman Reigns are also said to be discussing their possible involvement in the movie.
While no plot details about the 'Street Fighter' flick are known, the film is to be directed by Kitao Sakurai, who signed on to helm the project after Danny and Michael Philippou exited the project last June.
Debuting in 1987, 'Street Fighter' is a classic fighting game franchise where martial artists from around the world compete in intense one-on-one battles.
Each fighter has unique abilities and backstories, with the series centred around global tournaments and the struggle against powerful villains like M. Bison.
This will be the third time 'Street Fighter' has received a live-action adaptation for the silver screen, with the franchise's first cinematic outing coming in 1994 with the eponymous 'Street Fighter' - which was followed by 2009's 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chu-Li'.
Momoa could most recently be seen in another video game adaptation, 'A Minecraft Movie', where he portrayed Garret 'The Garbage Man' Garrison.
The film follows four misfits - Garret 'The Garbage Man' Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) - who are transported through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a cubic realm thriving on imagination.
To return home, they must master this new world and embark on a quest alongside expert crafter Steve (Jack Black), confronting various challenges and creatures along the way.
Momoa previously described 'A Minecraft Movie' to be 'almost life-changing' for him.
During an interview with RTE Entertainment, the 'Dune' star said: 'I didn't expect it to be almost life-changing for me. I've never done a comedy. What I felt like every day going to work, excitement, the amount of laughter I had ...
'It was just something I've never experienced - where I loved the job and then you love watching the movie. I'm very excited for people to see it.
'Sometimes you do your job, you want nothing to do with it, you don't know how it's going to come out, [it's] outside of your hands, but this was just like... every day was beautiful.
'I laughed so much and I'm kind of hooked - addicted to comedy.'
Momoa added he 'loves to play', and so 'A Minecraft Movie' 'allowed [him] to go to all those silly places'.
He explained: 'I don't try to be macho or cool, I have that playful nature to me. We've never really seen that side. So I guess yes, in a sense I was able to just let my freak flag fly!'

Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson to star in upcoming romance drama from Joe Swanberg

Dakota Fanning and Jake Johnson are to star in an upcoming romance drama for director Joe Swanberg. The 31-year-old actress and the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse star, 47, have signed on to the Uncle Kent filmmaker's untitled romance movie, Deadline has said. Cory Michael Smith, 38, is also said to be attached to the project. While plot details about the film are unknown, Deadline reports the movie - which is being written by Swanberg - is set in several different locations across Alaska. As well as starring in the flick, Fanning will produce alongside Swanberg and Ashleigh Snead, while Dan Johnson, Kathy Gitibin Parsa and Ariana Parsa serve as executive producers. The upcoming film will be the fourth collaboration between Swanberg and Johnson, with the pair having worked together on 2013's Drinking Buddies, Digging for Fire in 2015 and Win It All in 2017. Dakota Fanning is known for her role in The Equalizer 3, where she stars opposite Denzel Washington's grizzled Robert McCall as Emma Collins. In the film, retired assassin Robert McCall (Washington) seeks peace in a quiet Italian town but discovers it's under the grip of a violent mafia. As danger escalates, he unleashes his brutal skills to protect the people he now calls family. After The Equalizer 3 released in 2023, Washington confirmed a fourth and fifth movie were in the works. He told Esquire magazine: 'I told them I would do another Equalizer, and we're doing four and five. More people are happy about that - people love those daggone [God damn] Equalizers.' The Gladiator II actor, 70, added the franchise was as much for audiences as it was for him, because he loved getting the chance to be an action hero. He said: 'But I've come to realise that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they're for the people. 'They want me to go get the bad guys: 'We can't get them, so you go get them.' And I say, 'Okay, I'll get them! Just wait right there. I'll be right back!'' At the time of The Eqalizer 3's release, director Antoine Fuqua said he saw the movie as the final chapter of the franchise, but hinted he might explore a prequel using CGI to de-age Washington. Speaking to NME, the filmmaker said: 'I definitely thought about it a lot. Especially now with the new technology and the AI and all of that kind of stuff. 'Is there a story to be told how [McCall] became this person - the younger version. I've had the conversation with [writer] Richard Wenk quite a bit.' While de-aging technology has been used for actors like Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Robert De Niro in The Irishman, Fuqua admitted he was unsure if Washington would be open to the idea. He explained: 'I haven't talked to Denzel about that yet. It's all so fresh and new. I'm still watching [de-aging technology advance]. I've watched Harrison Ford's film and I know there are other movies coming out. 'I think Sony has one coming out with Tom Hanks soon [Here]. And I'm hearing the technology is getting better and better and better. So I'm kind of watching it to see where it goes.'

Matt Smith lands villain role in Star Wars: Starfighter

Matt Smith will play the villain in Star Wars: Starfighter. The House of the Dragon star has signed up to appear alongside Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in the upcoming film after director Shawn Levy met with a number of actors about the key role in the movie, and executives opted for the former Doctor Who lead, Deadline reports. Exact details on Matt's role in the film are being kept vague, but sources told the outlet it will be one of the villains. Star Wars: Starfighter - which will begin shooting later this year ahead of a May 2027 release - will act as a standalone movie within the space opera franchise and will be set five years after 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, Shawn, 56, recently teased the film will be a whole "new adventure" for fans. He said: 'There are many rumours, some true, some not. … This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It's a new adventure.' Gosling, 44, gushed: 'There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn." The script comes from Jonathan Tropper, who has spent the past two years working on it. Levy has been working on the movie with Lucasfilm since 2022 and last year, he said he was not planning to connect his work to any other films or TV shows in the long-running series. Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, he said: "I'll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question. Because there's only so many times that 'Star Wars' movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it's really forced me, because I don't want to do a 'Star Wars' movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie." The filmmaker - who has teamed up with his The Adam Project co-writer Tropper on the project - added he was making the flick with "tone and characters" at the forefront. He said: "I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. "And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfilment, that's Star Wars to me."

Bonnie Tyler wants to record next James Bond theme

Bonnie Tyler has offered to record the next James Bond theme. The veteran performer previously turned down the chance to record the title music for 1983's Never Say Never Again - which starred Sir Sean Connery but was not made by Eon Productions - and Bonnie admits she'd love to be given another shot at singing a theme for 007. She told The Telegraph newspaper: "I'd love to do a Bond theme because I turned one down for Never Say Never Again. My God, I was so excited when they asked me, but then I heard the song and I didn't believe in it. "So, please, if anybody's reading this, I wish they'd ask me again because I want a Bond song." The theme for for Never Say Never Again was recorded by Lani Hall after Bonnie turned it down. The next Bond movie will be the first produced by Amazon MGM Studios following the surprise departures of long-term producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The hunt is on for a new actor to play the lead role, but studio bosses have already hired Dune moviemaker Denis Villneuve to direct and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been brought onboard to write the script. There has been no word on who will get the honour of performing the film's theme, but bookmakers William Hill recently tipped Raye and Dua Lipa to be among the frontrunners alongside other stars including Chappell Roan, Lana Del Rey and Ed Sheeran. Last month Lee Phelps, spokesperson for William Hill, said: 'After Denis Villeneuve was revealed as the director of James Bond 26, talk of who will sing the theme song has really begun to hot up. "Following her blistering performance at Glastonbury, Raye is our new 6/4 favourite to do the honours, jumping ahead of Dua Lipa in the betting, who is now 5/2. "The top five in the betting are all female artists, with Chappell Roan, Lana Del Rey and Lady Gaga all towards the top of the market. The most likely male options look to be one of Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles or Michael Buble, all of whom are 20/1 shots."
