Oregon community college coach and player killed when truck crashes into bus carrying softball team
The driver of a pickup truck crossed a centerline and crashed head-on into a bus carrying 10 members of the Umpqua Community College softball team Friday night in Coos County, Oregon State Police said.
Jami Strinz, 46, described on the school's website as head softball coach, was driving the Chevrolet Express bus. Police said she was later declared dead at a hospital. Passenger, Kiley Jones, 19, was declared dead at the scene. The freshman from Nampa, Idaho, played first base, according to the school's athletics department website.
The team was traveling from a game in Coos Bay, according to a post on X by the athletics department.
'We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our student-athletes and one of our coaches lost their lives in the accident,' the post said. 'UCC hearts are breaking with this news, and we ask the community to keep the families and all of those affect in their thoughts and prayers.'
The other eight occupants of the bus suffered 'moderate to serious injuries and were provided emergency medical services,' police said. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado truck suffered serious injuries and was taken to an emergency medical center.
'Impaired driving is considered a primary cause of the crash,' police said. A criminal investigation is ongoing.
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said in a statement on X that her 'heart aches' for the school family reeling from the tragedy. 'Oregon is here for you in your grief and loss," she said.

Leigh Ann wrote on Facebook: "On this particular anniversary, I know that he is the presence of his brother, Hunter and his most perfect niece, Oakleigh. It is my belief that Garrett has been watching over us and was there with open arms to welcome them home." Oakleigh was described as a "ray of sunshine" who had a "sassy personality", according to their official obituary. It said: "Oakleigh was born in Owensboro, KY on February 22, 2024, and was a very loved little girl. Her smile was like a ray of sunshine and shone through in her sassy personality. "She enjoyed being outdoors feeding apples to the horses and riding in the side by side. She and her Daddy shared a love of eating. She was funny and smart and loved her babydoll." Other people paid tribute on Facebook, with one saying: "I've been a crying mess off and on all day. My heart is so heavy, and my mind just can't make sense of it all." Someone else commented: "Please keep this beautiful girl in your prayers. Her world had just been shook to the core. I love this girl like one of my own. Country music star Conner Smith has been formally charged after hitting and killing an elderly woman with his car. Last month, 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins was out walking her dog on a Sunday evening in Nashville, Tennessee, when Smith allegedly failed to give way in his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at a pedestrian crossing in Nashville, Tennessee. After the incident, shortly after 7:30pm, Dobbins was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Centre. Country singer Conner Smith fatally strikes 77-year-old woman with his truck in crosswalk, police say
Country singer Conner Smith was involved in a car accident in Nashville Sunday night that left a 77-year-old woman dead, police said. Smith was driving his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on 3rd Avenue North when he struck Dorothy Dobbins as she was walking in a crosswalk, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said in a news release. The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. CT. Dobbins, who lived nearby, was taken to the hospital, where she died. Smith's attorney confirmed to The Tennessean that the 24-year-old singer "was involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life." "His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins' family during this incredibly difficult time. Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation," attorney Worrick G. Robinson said. Authorities said preliminary findings indicate that Smith failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian. He did not show any signs of impairment, police said. No charges have been filed. Smith, a Nashville native, is signed to Big Machine Records' Valory label. He released his debut studio album "Smoky Mountains" last year.
