Arunachal orders closure of 386 government schools for zero enrolment
The Arunachal Pradesh government has ordered the closure of 386 government schools across the State that have recorded zero student enrolment in the current academic year.
The order, issued by the State's Education department on Monday (June 2, 2025), follows a detailed analysis of data from the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), which identified a significant number of schools that have remained non-functional, in some cases for several years.
The decision is aimed at rationalising educational infrastructure and making better use of teaching staff and facilities.
The closure affect schools in almost every district, including remote and border regions such as Kurung Kumey, Tawang, Anjaw, Changlang and Upper Subansiri.
The list includes primary, upper primary, middle, and secondary government schools that have had no student enrolment this year and, in some instances, for multiple academic sessions.
According to the official notification, West Kameng district reported the highest number of closures, with 73 schools shut down. Other districts with significant numbers include Papum Pare with 50 closures, West Siang with 31, Upper Subansiri and Siang with 28 each, and East Kameng with 23. Several other districts also saw closures ranging from one to 22 schools.
Education department officials explained that the closures are part of a larger rationalisation initiative that focuses on consolidating educational resources and improving learning outcomes.
By closing schools with no students, the government aims to reassign staff to institutions that are actively serving children and require support, they said.
The officials added that the move is aligned with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for the efficient management of school infrastructure and emphasises the need for quality over quantity.
The department has instructed all Deputy Directors of school education (DDSEs) and block education officers (BEOs) to ensure the immediate physical closure of the listed schools and begin redeployment of teaching and non-teaching staff wherever necessary.
The officials also confirmed that in cases where students may have recently migrated to the now-closed institutions, arrangements will be made to shift them to nearby functioning schools to prevent any disruption to their education.
This is the second major round of closures in the State.
Last year, the State government had also closed 600 schools, which were either non-functional or had zero enrolment.
Nearly 600 such schools have already been shut down or merged with other schools; State Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona had informed the Assembly last year.
The northeastern State has over 2,800 government-run lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, with more than 7,600 regular teachers.

Amit Shah vows victory in upcoming Tamil Nadu and West Bengal polls in 2026
NDA governments will be formed in both Tamil Nadu and Bengal in 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said while addressing party workers in Madurai on Sunday. This marks the BJP's sharpened focus on the southern state as it prepares for the assembly elections next year. "Though I reside in Delhi, my ears are always tuned to Tamil Nadu," Shah said. "The Chief Minister says, 'Amit Shah cannot defeat the DMK.' Stalin Ji, you are right - I cannot defeat the DMK. But the people of Tamil Nadu can." He added that, as someone who has campaigned across the country, he knows the pulse of the public. "And this time, the people of Tamil Nadu will uproot the DMK government," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's What A New Gutter System Should Cost You In Texas Gutters System US Learn More Undo This is the senior BJP leader's second visit to the state in two months. The first was on April 11, when he was in Chennai to announce the expansion of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) by bringing in the AIADMK. The BJP's former national president further alleged that the DMK has been a "100% failed government" that has not fulfilled even 60% of its manifesto promises. Live Events He said the DMK government in Tamil Nadu "has crossed all limits of corruption" and went on to mention the TASMAC liquor scam, which alone amounts to ₹39,000 crore. "This amount could have built two new classrooms in every primary school in every village of Tamil Nadu," he said. He added that he had one request for the BJP's mandal workers: No one has the right to rest until the DMK government is removed from Tamil Nadu. He also reiterated his demand for the Tamil Nadu government to offer medical and engineering courses in Tamil. "Why does the DMK government not offer medical and engineering education in Tamil?" he asked. Shah began his speech by apologising for not being able to speak Tamil. "I sincerely apologise to all the karyakartas of Tamil Nadu for not being able to speak to you in Tamil - one of the greatest languages of India," he said. Shah's remarks about Tamil come amid a language dispute with the MK Stalin-led state government, which has accused the Centre of Hindi imposition through the proposed three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP). The NEP issue sparked an intense row between the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government in March this year. Shah also brought up how Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed respect for Tamil Nadu by installing the Sengol in Parliament but had yet to receive a word of thanks from CM Stalin.

BJP irked over Operation Sindoor's omission in draft motion to be placed in Bengal Assembly
The West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit, on Sunday, criticised the omission of the term 'Operation Sindoor' in the draft motion to be moved for discussion in the Assembly this week "to condemn the killing of 26 tourists at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22" and to "commend the coordinated efforts of the different wings of the Indian Armed Forces" as a retaliatory action. The Monsoon session of the Assembly will resume on Monday and on Tuesday, the motion will be moved for a two-hour discussion. However, the draft of the motion, which was finalised at the meeting of the Assembly's business advisory committee, had irked the BJP, since the term "Operation Sindoor" is missing there. "The Indian Armed Forces are the country's pride and their successful operation against terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir was named as 'Operation Sindoor'. So the missing mention of the term 'Operation Sindoor' means an insult to the same armed forces," said a member of the BJP's legislative team in West Bengal. Asked to comment on this matter, BJP's chief whip in the state Assembly Shankar Ghosh said that those responsible for drafting the motion proposal do not have the minimum knowledge about the Indian Armed Forces and on what basis the names of the different operations by the security forces are named. "The details of the matter will be elaborated on the floor of the House by the Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. But all I can say is that lack of knowledge is evident from the drafting of the motion," Ghosh added. After the motion is moved for discussion on Tuesday, the Leader of the Opposition will rise and demand the inclusion of the term "Operation Sindoor" in the motion to pay homage to the Indian armed forces. Since the motion would be moved by the Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhya himself, no one in Trinamool Congress was ready to speak on this controversy. "Since the motion is the Assembly Speaker's initiative, it will not be fair on our part to comment on it," said a senior member of the state Cabinet. The Assembly Speaker himself said the proceedings of the House cannot be conducted as per the whims of the BJP's legislative team. He, however, added that the BJP legislators participating in the discussion on the motion will be free to express their views on the matter. Last month, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the name of 'Operation Sindoor' was politically motivated. She also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of marketing the people's sentiments over Sindoor for political gains. Her comments attracted strong criticism from the BJP leaders, who accused the Chief Minister of echoing the narratives of Pakistan through such statements.

President's Rule has made no difference in Manipur: Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh
Imposition of President's Rule has made no difference to Manipur, Congress general secretary (communication) Jairam Ramesh said on Sunday, amid fresh violence in the State over the past 24 hours. As violent protests erupted in Manipur over the arrest of a leader of Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol, the situation remained tense on Sunday with the administration imposing prohibitory orders and suspending Internet services in five Imphal valley districts, the police said. Hitting out at the government, Mr. Ramesh claimed that in February 2022, the BJP 'engineered a majority for itself alone' in the Assembly election. 'But less than fifteen months later from the night of May 3, 2023, Manipur was made to burn. Hundreds of innocent men, women, and children were killed. Thousands were displaced. Places of worship were destroyed,' he said. The Congress leader said the Union government set up a three-member Commission of Inquiry on June 4, 2023. The commission has been given repeated extensions to submit its report and the latest deadline is November 20, 2025, he noted. On August 1, 2023, Mr. Ramesh said, the Supreme Court observed that there had been an 'absolute breakdown of constitutional machinery' in the State for the past two months. 'The Union Home Minister went through the motions of visiting Manipur while the Prime Minister maintained absolute silence, refusing to say anything and meet anybody from the State,' he said. It was the Congress's announcement to bring no-confidence motion against Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in the Assembly session beginning February 10, 2025 that jolted the Centre to impose President's Rule, Mr. Ramesh claimed. Mr. Singh resigned on February 9 and President's Rule was finally imposed on February 13, 2025. 'President's Rule, however, has made no difference. The Governor himself has been forced to travel from Imphal airport to his residence by helicopter. Law and order in many parts of the State remains in a state of peril,' Mr. Ramesh added. The Congress leader again questioned Mr. Modi's absence. Mr. Ramesh asked, 'When will the Prime Minister find the time and inclination to visit Manipur?' He further said that Mr. Modi has travelled to different parts of the world and visited numerous States for 'trademark inaugurations' but he has never met with political leaders or civil society organisations from Manipur, having outsourced the management of the State's affairs to the Union Home Minister who, Mr. Ramesh claimed, had 'failed miserably.' 'The insensitivity of the Frequent Flyer PM to the suffering of the people of Manipur is truly shocking and defies understanding. He stands totally exposed just as the people of the State continue to pay the price of his callous and complete indifference. Their suffering is that of not only the State and the northeastern region but of the entire country,' Mr. Ramesh said in his post.
