Declare wild pigs as vermin for at least six months: Kerala forest minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Close on the heels of the Centre rejecting its request to bring amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act, the state has again approached the Union Ministry with the same demand.
In a letter to the ministry, Forest Minister A K Saseendran pointed out loopholes in the Centre's stance that the chief wildlife warden has powers to effectively deal with human-wildlife conflict. The minister urged the Centre to declare wild boars as vermin — at least in villages identified as conflict hotspots — for a period of six months.
Saseendran, in his letter to Union Minister for Environment and Forests Bhupender Yadav, pointed out that the chief wildlife warden has only limited powers to act swiftly in critical situations involving human-wildlife conflicts.
'Chief wildlife warden is empowered first to capture, tranquilise or translocate a dangerous animal. If these options are not feasible, then only the chief wildlife warden may permit killing of the identified wild animal listed in Schedule I of the Act. These procedural constraints have limited the warden's ability to act swiftly in critical situations,' he said.

Ludhiana: Chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann Sunday interacted with people living in villages under the shade of trees and sought their suggestions regarding the carving out of Rangla Punjab. Today it has risen to 63%. He said due to the concerted efforts of the Punjab govt, for the first time, the water of canals and rivers has reached the villages at the tail end of the state. His govt successfully safeguarded Punjab's water resources from being diverted to other states, he added. The CM told the farmers that to avoid complications in selling paddy due to high moisture content in Oct, the state govt has advanced the paddy cultivation season from June 1. For this, he said zone-wise cultivation of the paddy crop has been ensured in the state along with necessary planning and arrangements. Need better coordination on new threats: Amit Shah

Stressing the new security challenges that need to be tackled through "better coordination", Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday directed the "formation of homogenous teams of central and state agencies to develop strategies, implement and monitor them." This came after two days of the National Security Strategies Conference (NSSC) that concluded late Sunday where Shah further instructed the involvement of young police officers in each state to brainstorm on national challenges and devise solutions to address them. He urged that the use of national databases like NATGRID, NIDAAN, iMoT and CBI's fugitive database be inculcated amongst young officers by including them in all training programmes, according to an official statement. Addressing the 8th NSSC, the home minister said the government has resolved numerous issues scattered across states as he emphasised that the next 5-10 years would be very important for the development and security of the country. "The minister exhorted the police and central security agencies to adopt the motto of 'Suraksha, Sajagta and Samanvay' (Security, Alertness and co-ordination)," the statement noted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Senior Living Homes in Dharashiv May Surprise You Senior Living | Search Ads Undo

Monsoon Session: Opposition to flag 'intel lapses', 'Trump role'; brace for patriotic counter

Opposition speakers are planning a multi-pronged attack on the government in Monday's parliamentary debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The Opposition said it will try to pin down the government by blaming the Union home ministry for intelligence failures behind the Pahalgam civilian killings and target Prime Minister Narendra Modi by citing US President Trump's repeated claims of pressuring India into a ceasefire linked to trade talks. However, it also faces the challenge of the PM and ruling benches turning the debate into a wave of nationalist fervour-through Pakistan-bashing, projecting Operation Sindoor as another Modi-led triumph over Pakistan-sponsored terror after the previous surgical strikes, praising the forces and the PM's leadership, and urging the Opposition not to dim the nation's "victory glow." Most senior Opposition leaders are expected to join the debate in both Houses. Congress sources said Gaurav Gogoi will open for the Opposition, while likely Lok Sabha speakers include Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi (on Tuesday), Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, and Manish Tewari. Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Kanimozhi (DMK), and Abhishek Banerjee (Trinamool) are also expected to speak. There is curiosity over whether the outspoken Shashi Tharoor will get Gandhi's nod to represent the party. The tone of Opposition MPs who joined the government-led global outreach after Operation Sindoor will also be closely watched. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like War Thunder - Register now for free and play against over 75 Million real Players War Thunder Play Now Undo The INDIA bloc floor leaders will meet on Monday morning, ahead of the debate, to firm up their coordination. The Opposition campers said their speakers will demand from the PM to explain why he "abruptly halted " the Operation Sindoor when our forces were striking deeper into Pakistan's strategic assets and will accuse him of having been pressured by President Trump to do so. They will also challenge the PM to clarify his position vis-a-vis Trump's ceasefire claims. They will cite the Pahalgam killings, and the failure to nab the terrorists responsible for it, and the previous terror incidents in Poonch, Gangagir and Gulmarg to question the Modi government's claim of having restored normalcy in J&K.
