Many Americans say they need to earn six figures to feel financially set
A huge swath of Americans feels under pressure to earn big bucks simply to keep pace with the rising cost of living, a new survey suggests.
A poll by Bankrate found that nearly half of respondents think they need to early at least $100,00 a year to live comfortably, while a quarter said they need to make at least $150,000. To feel rich, over half said they would need annual income of at least $200,000, while 25% put the figure at $1 million, according to the personal finance firm.
Bankrate researchers polled 2,260 adults across the U.S. for the survey which measures Americans' attitudes toward financial security. The upshot: Many people are increasingly unsure of whether they'll be able to get a leg up in today's economy. The share of Americans who describe themselves as not financially secure reached 77% this year, up from 75% in 2024 and 72% in 2023, according to Bankrate.
"Times have shifted," Bankrate economic analyst Sarah Foster said in the analysis. "Getting rich may have once been what many Americans fantasized about, but now simply living comfortably feels like the new aspiration, as economic challenges make financial stability a rare luxury."
As of 2023 (the most recent data available), median U.S. income in the U.S. was just over $60,000 for a full-time worker, according to Census figures. If there's a silver lining, it's that average wage growth continues to surpass inflation, which has been on a downward trend since a pandemic-induced peak in 2022. The Consumer Price Index in May rose 2.4%, up just slightly from April's 2.3% rate.
According to Bankrate's findings, Gen Xers (ages 45 to 60) were the most likely generation, at 84%, to say they're not where they want to be financially. Gen X also reported needing the highest income to feel financially comfortable, with 35% saying they need to make $150,000 or more.
By comparison, 80% of Gen Z (ages 18 to 28) respondents to the survey said they don't feel financially secure.
Women and men also differed in their views on financial security. Bankrate's findings reflect that women feel less confident about their financial position than men. More than 1 in 3 (35%) said they aren't financially secure and never will be, according to the survey.

Lode Gold Engages Strategic Advisors to Advance Development of the Fremont Mine in Gold County- Mariposa, California
Toronto, Ontario--(Newsfile Corp. - June 24, 2025) - Lode Gold Resources Inc. (TSXV: LOD) (OTCQB: LODFF) ("Lode Gold" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that it has engaged experienced capital markets and strategic advisors to support the advancement of its Fremont Mine in Mariposa, California. These advisors will assist in securing strategic investors and partners as the Company moves into the next phase of development. As part of its current development strategy, Lode Gold is also engaging with mining contractors and progressing with engineering evaluations aimed at optimizing the mine plan and initiating permitting. The Company's evaluation is focused on three key priorities: High-grading during early production years to enhance initial project economics Scaling production to over 100,000 ounces per year in later phases Initiating small-scale production in the near term, to align with Trump Administration's March 2025 Executive Order that prioritizes the extraction of critical minerals, including gold, within the United States "Our objective is to take a disciplined and scalable approach to developing the Fremont Project," said Wendy T. Chan, CEO and Director at Lode Gold. "By securing the right strategic partnership, we will focus on various technical initiatives to optimize project economics, expedite permitting and get to production in near term. Being in a jurisdiction that is now increasingly aligned with domestic resource development, Fremont presents an interesting investment opportunity." The Fremont Mine is an advanced-stage exploration and development asset, on 100% private and patented land. It is located in Mariposa, an Opportunity Zone designated to attract investments with tax incentives provided by Trump's Administration. The 2023 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) outlined positive project economics at a gold price of USD $1,750, based on an annual production rate of approximately 130,000 ounces. More recently, an NI 43 -101 compliant mineral resource estimate (MRE 2025) was completed with a new geological model that separately evaluated vein and stockwork mineralization. Only 8% of the total mineral resource, filed at SEDAR+ (April 2025) has been extracted, mostly in the first 250 m. At a 1 g/t cut-off, the average true width is 53 m (at 3 g/t cut-off, the width is 16.8 m). Upcoming Near Term 2025-2026 Catalysts: Rehabilitation of 2 km underground workings Expedite access to two adits, out of a total of 14 Channel sampling to upgrade resources to M&I Metallurgy and Recovery Studies Geotechnical work and rock mechanics assessments Drilling 3,000 m to initiate Pre-Feasibility Study Completion of Pre-Feasibility Study (underground bulk mining and other optimized methods will be evaluated) About Lode Gold Lode Gold (TSXV: LOD) is an exploration and development company with projects in highly prospective and safe mining jurisdictions in Canada and the United States. In Canada, its assets in Yukon sit on the southern portion of the prolific Tombstone Belt. It covers 99.5 km2 across a 27 km strike. Over 4,500 m have been drilled with confirmed gold endowment and economic drill intercepts over 50 m. There are four reduced-intrusive targets (RIRGS), in addition to sedimentary-hosted orogenic exploration gold. In New Brunswick, Lode Gold, through its subsidiary 1475039 B.C. Ltd. (soon to be spun out into Gold Orogen), has created one of the largest land packages with its Acadian Gold Joint Venture, consisting of an area that spans 445 km2 with a 44 km strike. It has confirmed gold endowment with mineralized rhyolites. In preparation for the spin-out, NI 43 101 technical reports have been prepared for all assets in Yukon and New Brunswick in 2024. In the United States, the Company is focused on its advanced exploration and development asset, the Fremont Mine in Mariposa, California. According to the NI 43- 101 Compliant 2025 MRE, the asset contains 1.3 Moz at 4.4 g/t (3 g/t cut-off) with an average true width: 16.8 m. Fremont was previously mined at 10.7 g/t. During gold mining prohibition in WWII, its mining license was suspended. Only 8% of the resource identified in the 2025 MRE has been extracted. This asset has exploration upside and is open at depth (three step-out holes at 1,300 m hit structure and were mineralized) and on strike. This is a brownfield project with over 43,000 m drilled, 23 km of underground workings and 14 adits. The project has excellent infrastructure and is close to electricity, water, roads, railhead and port. Recently, the Company completed an internal scoping study, with a strategic pivot to 100% underground mining. Previously, in March 2023, the Company completed an NI 43-101 Preliminary Economic Assessment ("PEA") with an open pit and underground combination mine. Inflation holds steady as data shows how prices are faring after Trump's ‘Liberation Day' tariffs
Inflation held steady last month, according to data that gives the first glimpse of how prices are faring since President Donald Trump's sweeping 'Liberation Day' tariffs. Consumer prices rose 0.1 percent on a monthly basis in May, while annual inflation stood at 2.4 percent, according to the Department of Labor's consumer price index. Last month, the year-long inflation stood at 2.3 percent. The report captures the period after Trump unveiled his global reciprocal tariffs in April and provides some insight as to whether businesses are bearing the brunt of the duties themselves or passing them on to customers. Trump touted the figures as a success and called on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. 'CPI JUST OUT. GREAT NUMBERS! FED SHOULD LOWER ONE FULL POINT,' the president said on Truth Social Wednesday. 'WOULD PAY MUCH LESS INTEREST ON DEBT COMING DUE. SO IMPORTANT!!!' While analysts predicted a bigger increase, some still warned that the future is uncertain because tariffs keep changing. 'So far, inflation risks from higher tariffs are subdued,' Win Thin, global head of markets strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman, told Bloomberg. 'Nonetheless, U.S. protectionist trade policy and uncertainty about the ultimate level of tariffs are downside risks to growth and upside risk to inflation. Bottom line: the fundamental USD downtrend is intact.' The stock markets responded positively to the news with all the major indexes pointing up to start the trading day. Since Trump announced his global reciprocal tariffs and the stock market was spooked, many of the duties were paused. However, 10 percent tariffs for most countries remain. Inflation has been slow to respond to the tariffs as most retailers are selling merchandise accumulated before the import duties took effect. Economists said that the reduction in the scale of some trade tariffs may have 'helped to restrain cost increases thus far,' Wells Fargo's Sarah House and Nicole Cervi said. 'That said, as the higher tariff regime persists, shielding consumers from the costs is likely to become more challenging,' the economists added. 'Only a few goods prices likely rose as a result of the new tariffs in May,' Pantheon Macroeconomics economists Samuel Tombs and Oliver Allen said in a note, Bloomberg reports. 'June will be a different story — while some providers of discretionary services probably cut prices or kept them low to sustain demand.' Walmart warned customers last month that they could see price rises because of the trade tariffs. The retailer's chief financial officer John David Rainey said that the tariffs are 'still too high.' 'It's more than any supplier can absorb. And so I'm concerned that consumer is going to start seeing higher prices,' he said. 'You'll begin to see that, likely towards the tail end of this month, and then certainly much more in June.' Reuters contributed reporting

Toy and game prices rise at the fastest rate on record as Trump's tariffs on China hit industry hard
The cost of toys and games is rising at a record rate as the industry begins to feel the impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs on China. While inflation held steady last month at 0.1 percent, the price of toys, games and playground equipment saw a rise of 2.2 percent between April and May, according to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The latest figures capture the period after Trump unveiled his global reciprocal tariffs in April, and while the full impact is yet to appear in the data, experts say it's a gloomy indication of what's to come for the toy industry. After months of back and forth, tariffs on Chinese imports – which at one point rocketed to 145 percent – are currently at 30 percent until mid-August. Nearly 80 percent of the toys sold in the U.S. are sourced from China, according to The Toy Association, and the industry is bracing itself. Isaac Larian, chief executive of MGA Entertainment, which manufactures brands including Bratz and Little Tikes, told The Washington Post that inflation 'is only just starting.' 'There's going to be a domino effect: You're going to see prices go even higher,' Larian said. 'You're going to see empty shelves and a lack of innovation.' Trump acknowledged that his tariffs could lead to higher prices or less inventory. 'Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls,' he said in April. He also suggested those two dolls could 'cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally.' Some toy makers say they have no choice but to pass on the tariffs to customers. 'It's a tough situation,' Scott Clarke, the president of Douglas, which sells stuffed toy animals, told The Post. 'We've absorbed some of the tariffs, but there's only so much we can do. Ultimately, this is a tax on American businesses, and it's the consumer that's having to pay.' Last month Mattel, the creator of Barbie, Hot Wheels, Uno, American Girl and more, was threatened by Trump for refusing to move its production to the U.S. – the ultimate goal of the president's tariffs. Ynon Kreiz, the chairman and CEO of Mattel, told CNBC it was unlikely the company would move production to the U.S as a result of tariffs; preferring instead to diversify production to other countries or just raise prices on U.S. consumers. 'That's ok. Let him go, and we'll put a 100 percent tariff on his toy, and he won't sell one toy in the United States, and that's their biggest market,' Trump said. Greg Ahearn, president and CEO of The Toy Association, previously said that price increases of 15 percent to 20 percent are expected on games, dolls, cars and other toys by the back-to-school shopping season. The price range that U.S. consumers are willing to pay is anywhere from $4.99 to $19.99, leaving little wiggle room to raise prices, he said.
