Spain Showers Morocco for Key Contribution to Blackout Recovery

Morocco World30-04-2025

Rabat – Spanish officials and media have been showering praise on Morocco for helping Spain resolve the massive blackout that affected the country this week.
News outlet AS is one of the many Spanish media organizations that highlighted Morocco's crucial role in helping Spain recover after the massive blackout that affected tens of millions of people across the Iberian Peninsula.
The blackouts disrupted businesses, hospitals, transit systems, and cellular networks, among other critical infrastructure.
'In the recovery process to restore electrical normality, one country played a key role- Morocco,' As wrote, recalling Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's latest remarks expressing gratitude to Morocco for its essential help.
On Monday, Sanchez extended his heartfelt gratitude to Morocco, acknowledging its pivotal role in the recovery efforts to help the country restore power to the southern regions of Spain in the wake of the crisis.
Spanish reports stressed that Morocco has allocated 38% of its energy production capacity to help Spain during the crisis.
Cincodias El País echoed the same sentiment, noting that the Moroccan Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) connected its grid with Spain via the two existing interconnection lines under the Strait of Gibraltar following a request from Spain's Red Electrica Española.
El Periodico de la Energia also recalled Morocco's aid following the blackout, noting that the electrical interconnection between the two countries helped Spain survive following the massive blackout.
The website noted that the energy infrastructure linking the two countries comprises seven underwater cables crossing the Strait of Gibraltar.
Other sources in Spanish media further highlighted Morocco's mega energy projects, including the development of a liquefied natural gas terminal in the port of Nador to contribute to strengthening energy sovereignty.
Earlier this month, Minister of Energy Leila Benali announced Morocco's interest in the development of national gas infrastructure, including the creation of the country's first liquefied natural terminal at the port.
Benali said a gas pipeline network will be built to connect the new terminal to the Maghreb Europe Gas Pipeline.
The new infrastructure aims to supply existing and future power plants operated by ONEE as well as industrial zones extending to Kenitra and Mohammedia..
The project is part of Morocco's efforts to boost its energy security and expand regional partnerships, Benali said, noting the critical interconnection between energy, water, and food security amid global geopolitical tensions and environmental pressures.
Morocco's goal is to achieve at least 52% of installed energy capacity from renewable energy by 2030. Currently, the capacity has now reached 45%.

Glovo Faces Antitrust Allegations in Morocco's Food Delivery Market

Doha – The Competition Council of Morocco has officially notified GlovoApp Morocco of several grievances regarding alleged anticompetitive practices in the digital food ordering and delivery platform market. The notification follows an investigation initiated by the Council's self-referral decision number 20/D/2024 dated February 19, 2024. The investigation stems from a surprise inspection of Glovo's Casablanca offices on October 22, 2024. This operation was authorized by the King's Prosecutor and conducted with support from the National Judicial Police Brigade. According to the Council's Rapporteur General, the investigation revealed evidence of anticompetitive practices by Glovo. The company is accused of abusing its dominant market position, exploiting the economic dependency of its commercial partners, and implementing unfairly low pricing strategies. The notification opens a contradictory procedure phase that guarantees Glovo's defense rights. The constitutional institution, headed by Ahmed Rahhou, clarified that this notification does not prejudge the final decision, which can only be determined by the Council's board. Glovo, a Spanish-origin delivery platform, quickly responded to the allegations in a statement released Thursday. The company acknowledged receiving the notification while stressing that it 'does not prejudge the Council's final decision.' Glovo reaffirmed 'its deep commitment to Morocco' and its desire to 'maintain the best relationships with its entire ecosystem — partners, delivery drivers, and customers — and Moroccan authorities.' 'We remain committed to respecting fair competition rules, transparency, innovation, and service quality to contribute to the development of our sector, which is in constant technological evolution, in a win-win dynamic,' Glovo concluded in its statement. Since establishing operations in Morocco, Glovo has transformed the local home delivery landscape. Morocco represents the company's fourth-largest market globally. The platform currently works with more than 6,500 business partners and 4,500 couriers throughout the kingdom. Article 7 of Law No. 104-12 on freedom of prices and competition prohibits behaviors that aim to 'prevent, restrict or distort competition.' The law specifically forbids imposing 'unjustified commercial conditions' or 'minimum resale prices.' According to the Competition Council, such practices risk harming offer diversity, innovation, and consumer rights. The final decision will be made by the Council's board after conducting a contradictory investigation respecting the defense rights of the concerned party and following a Council session. The board alone will determine whether the alleged grievances are well-founded. This regulatory action aims to preserve the competitive balance of the market in the interest of consumers and proper economic functioning. Tags: Council of competitionFood DeliveryGlovo in Morocco

Spain : A Sumar draft bill to break agreements with Morocco and Israel

The Sumar group in the Spanish Parliament has introduced a draft law aimed at prohibiting all forms of agreements and cooperation between Spanish administrations and countries occupying territories illegally. The focus is particularly on Morocco—referred to as the «occupier of Western Sahara»—and Israel in relation to the occupied Palestinian territories, according to Spanish media sources. The proposal calls for banning Spanish companies from engaging in commercial, financial, or investment activities that directly or indirectly support illegal settlements in these territories. It describes such activities as a form of «plunder» against the Sahrawi and Palestinian peoples. The initiative also seeks to sever all forms of cooperation—economic, military, cultural, and more—with these countries. It requires Spanish public entities to annul any existing agreements and prohibits the establishment of diplomatic representation or the signing of international treaties related to the occupied territories. Techi Sidi, a parliamentarian of Sahrawi descent and a member of the leftist party, explained that the draft law is grounded in United Nations resolutions and rulings by the European Court of Justice, particularly on the Western Sahara issue. The proposal also addresses the Palestinian cause, urging the Spanish Socialist Party to support the measure as a means of applying economic pressure on both Morocco and Israel.

2030 World Cup to 'Propel' Morocco's Economic Growth - Spanish Think-Tank

The joint hosting of the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal will "propel" Morocco's economic growth and enshrine its diplomatic positioning, Spanish think-tank Real Instituto Elcano stresses. In an analysis named "World Cup 2030: Grand entrance of Moroccan soft power", Antonio Navarro Amuedo, specialist in the Maghreb and the Middle East and a member of the think-tank, writes that the objective is clearly "to strengthen Morocco's international influence, by showcasing the image of a modern, tolerant and emerging country". On the economic front, the author stresses that hosting the World Cup will stimulate the Kingdom's economic growth, through a vast program to modernize road, airport, rail and urban infrastructure. Aware of the positive spin-offs that the World Cup could have on the country's development, Morocco has been fully committed to preparing for this global sporting event ever since the Kingdom presented a joint bid with Spain and Portugal, he recalls, noting that the Grand Stade of Casablanca embodies this "new brand of Morocco, an ambitious, forward-looking country". According to the Real Instituto Elcano, sport, part of this soft power strategy, can be used as a vector of attraction and influence to make the 2030 World Cup the symbol of an emerging Morocco, just as the Barcelona Olympics were for Spain in 1992. Highlighting the 'successes achieved' by Moroccan diplomacy in recent years, the prestigious think tank states that co-hosting the 2030 World Cup is 'the culmination of a renewed Moroccan foreign policy, marked by the diversification of alliances beyond the traditional European and American partners'. This strategic repositioning is accompanied by Morocco's assertive return to the African stage, driven by two major priorities: the preservation of its territorial integrity and the quest for greater autonomy in the economic, security and defense fields, the think-tank adds.
